I just tried out a book that’s all about Whoopie Pies. One of the writers of the book (Amy) is also the editor of my book, Cake Pops. Amy sent me a copy to check out and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
I made and fell in love with these sugar-filled sandwiches. They are delish! They’re like little cakes shaped like cookies… (but pie-like… not so much.)
It’s funny… when I gave these treats away, everyone loved them, but no one knew what to call them. Everyone asked “What are they?” It made me wonder how common they are in other places. Have you made whoopie pies? Heard of them? Seen one out in the wild?
No worries if you haven’t. Now you can make your very own. The book is organized for easy reading.
There’s a section devoted to cakes…
And a section devoted to fillings. Great for mixing and matching and making whoopies.
Lots and lots of whoopie.
Yum!
I decided to make the classic chocolate whoopie (big surprise) and paired it with peanut butter filling. The recipe called for dark brown sugar. I used this dark muscovado sugar instead because that’s all I had on hand. It made them extra tasty.
After you mix up the batter, drop it by spoonfuls on a parchment covered baking sheet.
After they bake and cool for a few minutes carefully remove them from the parchment paper.
Place them flat side up on a cookie rack. Then you can spoon the filling on…
Or pipe it on.
I like piping it on. It’s much more fun.
And prettier to look at.
Sandwich the filling between two of the cakes.
And press gently. That’s it.
Whoo-hooo for whoopies. Now go make some.
1 Tbsp of batter should make about 48 two-inch cakes or 24 pies. Recipe from Whoopie PiesChocolate Whoopie Pies
Ingredients
Chocolate Whoopie Pies
Salty Peanut Butter Filling
Instructions
Notes
2 Tbsp of batter should make about 30 four-inch cakes or 15 pies.
You can also roll the edges in sprinkles, chopped chocolate, nuts, etc. or in this case, peanut butter morsels.
Ummm… can I say these are just about the most fun things to eat. They’re so good you kinda feel like you’re being bad when you sink your teeth into them.
Want to make some whoopies?
Amy sent me a second copy to do with what I want. And I want to give it to one of you. Want it?
- Leave a comment on this post and tell me if you’ve ever made whoopies… Heard of them?… Know the best place to get them? Or just want to learn more about them.
- Deadline to enter is Monday, July 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET Sorry, Time’s Up. Winner announced below.
- One winner will be chosen at random and announced sometime Monday evening on this post.
Good luck!
Whoopie!!! We have a winner and boy are they in for a treat.
Congratulations Neddy (# 1413). Now you can try lots and lots of whoopie pies.
Woopie pies came from the state of Maine and people make them every day I am a transplant from Maine and am turning people onto them all the time now in Florida
Never heart of them but seem really delicious!

los quiero hacer mañana pero no estoy segura de como pero gracias por la receta aunque es un poco confusa pero hay la entiendo, GRACIAS
Made them yesterday and .. HELL!! They taste fantastic!! Here in Germany the combination of peanutbutter an chocolate is nearly unknown so I made them to introduce my friends to a whole new world of taste and it worked :) The looooved them!! Thanks so much for sharing your recipes with us!! Greetz from Germany
I had a question about the whoopie pies. I’m going to make them with both the cream cheese and peanut butter frosting, I was wondering if I could freeze them. Or how long will they last in an airtight container?
Thanks!
Thank you for all of your wonderful suggestions. I am making whoopie pies for the first time today and thought I would check out your post on whoopsie pies because your cake pops are absolutely incredible!!!! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent with all of us! Wish me luck with my first batch of whoopie pies :)
Great recipe thanks!
I just love whoopie pies! So easy to bake and everybody loves them. YUM!
I love You!(;
Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe.
yum!!
These have been around forever in the Northeast… I dont understand how no one else has never really known about them….
I’ve made these since i was a kid.
This is the worst recipe I’ve ever made.
I just made these- they were very very very good, but the peanut butter was a bit over-powering.
Hello maam, I’ve tried your classic chocolate whoopie. It’s super easy to do and super delicious. My children and friends loved it. I also bought your cake pop book. I thought of giving it a try. Thank you for the great info.
These whoppies are so delicious!
These whoopies are so delicious!
Im from new hampshire and they r very popular, ive never heard of someone who doesnt no what they r!
The ones I make have a cream cheese/marshmallow cream filling. Sort of emphasizes the moist chocolatey goodness of the cake. They are very yummy.
I have never made them but they look oh so yummy!!! :-)
Amazinggg could you please post a recipe of cake pops :) thanks
I just made a batch with my daughter, and they’re amazing.
Thanks for sharing the recipe
xoxo
These are even more exciting as mini’s.2″ whoopie pies with piping from a ridged nozzle. I served assorted minis, rather than cupcakes, for my daughter’s sweet sixteen (we now live in Lancaster, Pa). Chocolate with white raspberry piped filling, mint chocolate chip, chocolate peanut butter, and carrots cake with cream cheese. delicious!
I saw this post and the Pillow Cookie post… and combined the two: http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m59zgwJ6s51rwvyo3o1_1280.png
Thanks for the great idea!
im from maine whoopie pies are very common growing up my mom made best whoopie pies can this book be bought
I made these a lot when my children were young for treats. I think I remember though buttermilk in the recipe and used white sugar not brown. . I mixed the fluff with little butter and crisco and vanilla for my taste. I then see my son buy a few of these. They were expensive. His kids thought they were a gourmet treat. I said I made them all the time for you and all of a sudden this is a gourmet treat! I was told that I made them a lot and made so many at one time they were getting a little sick of the same thing, lol. They are easy to make and will make them for my grandchildren and they will think I can make anything, lol Even though they are dark, they do not have a real chocolate taste to them. So for real chocolate lovers change the recipe a bit so you will not get disappointed. I like them though. Believe it or not I am not a chocolate nut. I would take a white cake and caramel any day, lol.
Looks like Macarons, but doesn’t use egg white. I call it American Macaron. I will try to make them…
I tried these, these are too good. so try it, so will love them.
i never knew the name of these, in 1973 this bakery, in St Louis, Mo.. they called them ” Wednesday Specials ” so to finally no the name of them. I just found out last year, in 2011. They we’re the best dessert I ever tasted. SCRUMPDILLYIISHIOUS, I LOVED
oh yeah, i make these all the time. the amish make them the best though.
I stumbled on your website today when I was looking for pictures of whoopie pies as I’m making them for a charity bake sale at work next week. SO glad I found your site as it is amazing. You are so talented!! I have never baked (or even tasted) a whoopie pie so fingers crossed – they havent really made it big in Scotland yet so lets hope mine turn out well. I hope to be making some of your other creations soon too – especially love the “burger and fries” cupcake/brownie…cant wait to try it.
I can remember my mom making them when I was small and now I make them for my family. I’ve made a variety of flavors, but the chocolate classic is everyones favorite. My teen even prefers for his birthday a large batch for his friends to make it “cool” Just roll the edges in jimmies, mini M&Ms, etc.
I’d never heard of whoopie pies until I moved to eastern Ohio. I’m originally from central Missouri, so maybe they’re more of a regional thing. They do look delicious though! :)
I love these!! Peanut butter and chocolate are so good together!! I tried them, and put them on my blog!
I just made these for a bake-sale for school. I didn’t have a mixer so I just beat everything by hand and it was still very simple. Hopefully they are a hit at the sale. Thanks and I am definitely coming back here for more baking ideas!
Growing up in Maine, they were very common. Lots of moms made these for kids treats. Every corner store in Maine seems to have them for sale., but homeade are the best! Apparently Maine and Pennsylvania argue over the origin of the Whoopie Pie. Both want to claim it as their own!
OMG I GOT THAT BOOK FOR MY BIRTHDAY ITS SO AWESOME!!! GET IT ASAP BECUASE ITS AWESOME! OMG I LOVE IT SO MUCH I LITERALLY WAS LOOKING THROUGH IT TODAY! ???
I recently purchased a boxed cake mix for Whoppie Pies. They were so simple to make. I made them for a son-in-law in the Army who is overseas. He shared them with his soldier buddies and they all loved them.
i love whoopie pies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! i love this recipe.
i was wondering if you have a recipe for red velvet whoopie pies. :D
I’ve just started baking whoopie pies and have tried several flavors. I even bought one of those Wilton pans made espeically for whoopie pies. However, I found the method you used of baking them on a cookie sheet much better.
One issue I’ve had is storage. My pies would become dry or mushy depending on the storage method. My daughter came up with a solution that seems to work well. Do not fill the pies until you are ready to serve them. Store them in an airtight container with parchment between the layers in the fridge. When you are ready to pop some out, fill them, and they will be perfect!
I’ve made these twice now, and they turned out wonderfully! I did notice that if I let the cakes sit out a bit after cooling they handle much better (no sticky surfaces, wait an extra 5 mins or so). Thank you so much for the recipe and helpful photos. <3
I have tasted different whoopie pies and have not found one that I didn’t love.I would love to have a copy of your book. Thanks Theresa
Love the Whoopies! ‘Can’t say the name without laughing! I even made a poem about that on my blog! These look good as pop in your mouth, minis!! I’ve made Pumpkin Whoopies and used mascarpone cheese instead of cream cheese. I haven’t tried the Red Velvet Whoopies yet, but for me, if it’s Whoopie, no matter what kind, it’s GOOD! Thanks for these!
Never tasted one before but yours look really good.
made peppermint whoopie pies and took them to work. There were none left at the end of the shift.
It’s funny, because I found out about whoopie pies a year or so ago now, although I have only made them once or twice, but now here in Australia they’ve become ‘the next best thing’ in cooking. lol It’s funny how we go through fazes! I’m hoping to get a cake pop faze going, now that I’ve found out about your site.
Love the look of the salty peanut butter ones. Yum!
My mom made these all the time when I was a kid in RI. The filling was Crisco and confectionery sugar. They never lasted long in the house. This past fathers’ day, my kids made me breakfast and there was a great big woopie pie by my plate :-)
I just made these cookies,
between two cookies chocolate – ganache, mjammie !!
My compliments for this recipy !
(oh i’m sorry my english is not that good …)
I make them about 1 a month, we love the choc. one’s and pumpkin one’s, in PA we call them whoopie ‘s and it’s a common thing to have around here. The amish are the one’s that make them regularly and really good! It’s a staple in my family as a dessert! Other’s call them GOB’s, doesn’t sound so good to me!
I grew up in Lancaster County, PA…home of the Amish. I’ve been making whoopie pies since I could help my grandma bake them. They’re fantastic!! I love trying all different variations, but my absolute favorite is still the standard chocolate cake with vanilla filling! It’s the best!
I love making these! I am currently making a chocolate cookie with a cream cheese middle for my very last day of high school ever!!!!!!! Thanks for the recipes!
I’m a bit late in adding my comment…and I didn’t read the other LOTS and LOTS of comments, but whoopie pies are a very popular Amish thing. I lived in Indiana Amish country for three years and would say whoopie pies and their cinnamon rolls were probably their best sellers.
i had that book it is great!!
I HAVE THAT BOOK AND LOVE IT!
God, I’ve been obsessed with making them ever since I got it. I’ve made over 12 different combinations and made that cake twice. With carrot cake recipe :)
I have poked around your blog on numerous occasions, but this was the first recipe I tried! They came out beautifully!!!! I used regular brown sugar because it’s what I had. Additionally, I reduced the baking soda by half to 3/4 teaspoon, increased oven temp to 385 and baked in the lower third of the oven, all because I live above 7000 feet. They rose perfectly and had gorgeous round tops!!!! I used vanilla frosting in half, and the salted peanut butter filling on the other half. Both delicious, and the peanut butter is a nice change! Thanks so much for sharing this recipe and making me look like a pro!
Just printed this, and they look AMAZING!
All this time I thought whoopie pies were made pretty large. Apparently my sister tells me that they’re relatively small. Disappoinment :(
I would make them BIG :D
Thank you very much for this recipe. I just tried making a batch (practicing for my daughters 5th birthday tea party) and they came out wonderfully.
G’day from Australia!
Carrot Cake Whoopies with Honeyed Cream Cheese Filling/Frosting are THE BEST ever. The traditional chocolate with marshmallow whoopies are a bit too sweet for my taste. They’re all good, though. And Amy’s book is fantastic!
This was my first time making them and they turned out delish! How long do they stay fresh? I wanted to bake them to send to my in-laws but am not sure if they will last.
I tried making these tonight and they ran all over the place! I even added more flour to make a thicker dough but still just everywhere.
And my filling turned into a goo. I used only crunchy peanut butter (since I am living in England and peanut butter itself, let alone smooth peanut butter is near impossible to find) and it never got creamy or fluffy. It just clumped, so I added a bit of milk and it just got sticky.
Any hints?
I must have done something wrong when I made there- or something was lost in translation of the recipe- they did not turn out well at all… looked good but tasted awful!
Made a batch yesterday, with a heart shaped Whoppie Pan from Wilton (for Valentines). Made classic chocolate with the classic marshmellow fluff filling. Easy to make and fun for the grandkids.
I bought the book yesterday, today I’m giving it a go!
I’m so glad to have found your site- I love the pictured step by step help and narrative- thanks!
Can’t wait to get started on these!!
never tried them, but that’s 1 of my new year’s resolutions, to bake more
How far in advance can these be made?????
ust discovered whoopies. No one in Carlisle, Cumbria has ever heard of them. Took some into work, whent down a real treat. Don’t know if Carlisle are ready for such a treat!!!!!!!
They are called Gobs in Western PA. I’ve had them ever since I was a little kid. They make pumpkin ones in the fall, chocolate ones for the rest of the year. Love the variation of recipies.
they r amazin
the best
todo esto es una belleza
arte en repoteria
te amo bakerella
Just made my first batch of whoopie pies. They are so yummy!
Plus the peanut butter filling also makes a great icing for chocolate or vanilla cupcakes. Thanks for a fabulous recipe!!
Yes, I’ve heard of them! They are a big deal up in New England. I can’t wait to try this recipe for my friend’s birthday today. She loves Whoopie Pies, but they don’t sell ’em down here in central Texas.
I will try this recipe & comment later. To purchase try Wicked Whoopies based in Maine!
wow i love whoopie pies
i’ve made thins recipie twice now and they didnt last long. they are so yummy
cant wait to get the book for christmas so i can try out some more flavour combinations :]
I love your website! I have made many of your recipes and it has inspired me to start my own blog. Check it out!
Can you use a silcone mat (Silpat) on your cookie sheet instead of parchment? Please advise.
i have the same book but every time i’ve made them they come out…. lumpy? well, like http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs560.snc3/30592_10100183799097055_12418755_56296817_7754386_n.jpg WHYYYYY??!?!
I love whoopie pies. I thought they were PennaDutch in origin. The Amish sell them around Lancaster, PA. They are one of the things I miss from PA….lol…Not many people in TX have even heard of them. :D
Whoopies/Gobs are a tradition in Pennsylvania thanks to the Pennsylvania Dutch. My boss’s wife make them for us a couple times a year. They are great when done right. I love your website. I will be sure to thhis with her because loves to bake!
way too salty !!!!!!
just made them. they are super tasty! thanks, ladies. off to buy the book tomorrow!
Those look so good! I saw a book just like that at a local book store! I think I might have to try these one day!
Awwww, I bought this book 2 days ago & had my very first attempt yesterday. Attempt being the operative word. My batter turned out too runny rom looking at your pictures, and I ended up with whoopee pancakes, I think I will have to invest in a cup measuring thingy doo-dah! Gosh darn the American measurements!!!
Hopeully at some point in the near future I will be able to try my very first whoopee pie!
Amazing picture, i’ve made whoopie this week-end and i love it
oh yes this soo great I would love to make some whoopie pies can you send me a book of recipes I will pay you for the book
oh this soo cool I would love to make some whoopie pies for my friends when they come over can you send me a recipe to make them or what do I just copy it off the web
I was raised in Somerset county in Pennsylvania, in and around Amish and Mennonites. My family has made Whoopie Pies since way before I arrived in 1956. It’s a western Pennsylvania/Amish tradition and my Mom’s can never be bettered!
I know whoopie pies! My Mom made them for us all our lives…and I’ve made them for my daughters/family/friends all their lives. Yum – thanks for sharing your recipe.
These look so good, can’t wait to give them a try. I bet the kids will love them.
I just bought your book, “Cake Pops”. I love it ! Can’t wait to started
making them. I was reading about the “Whoppie Pies”. Would
love to try to make them. Where can I find the book that shows
how to make these ?
Thank you,
Shirley Sanders
I just ordered this book. I plan to make these over the holidays. Invent my own recipes as well…Thanks…much love from the caribbean island St. Lucia!!!
I absolutely LOVE whoopie Pies!!! I actually won an Iron Chef competition in college, using these lovely desserts as my final course! Thanks so much for the book reference; I’m excited to head over to Barnes and Noble and pick up a copy!!!
I saw these and thought they were so cute, I bought the book and tried them. They are awesome! I just made some in the local High School’s colors: red and blue. Of course I made the red velvet, with cream cheese filling, and I have to say they taste like Christmas to me! (Red Velvet cake is what my mom always makes for Christmas…only for Christmas, so they were such a treat for me!)
found a pan just for whoppie pies!
http://www.surlatable.com/product/kitchenbakeware/decorating+tools+%26+sets/wilton+whoopie+pie+pan.do
Growing up near Lancaster County, we often encountered Whoopie Pies at Farmer’s Markets and country stores. They are truly scrumptious. I just read the Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly 2010” and they named Beiler’s Bakery at the Reading Terminal Market as having the best Whoopie Pies….gonna have to make a road trip!
I made these yesterday. They were very good! But I was not a fan of the peanut butter filling. I prefer a more traditional whoppie pie. (:
I used to eat Moonpies with Kickapoo Joy Juice when I was kid. Doesn’t look the same as a whoopie pie.
In PA we had larger versions of these that were devil’s food cake with a sweet cream filling but they were called, “gobs.” Not sure what differences in recipe the ones I had as a kid and this kind are but it’s the one thing I really miss from my paternal grandmother as a child.
I tried them out, but mine are a lot more poofy than yours. How do you get them to flatten out? I suspect it might be that I sub-ed more butter instead of shortening because it creeps me out…any thoughts/suggestions?
oops, I hit submit too fast, I posted 3633. The pies freeze nicely to eat at a later date.
I have the best whoppie pie recipe! It must be a new england recipe as the filling has fluffernutter in it and fluff is only in new england. I also have the most scrumptious pumpkin whoopie pie recipe, mmmmm. Whoopie pies are the greatest!!
Hello! Beautiful pies! Very nice idea!
How long can I store them for? How can I wrap them to give as a gift or even to sell them?
Thank very much!
Milena
Nothing is better then sitting beside a rocky beach with a lobster roll and a whoopie pie for dessert. (The classic is chocolate with fluffy white filling.)
Simple and perfect.
A new england experience that everyone should have.
I can’t believe how many people here in FL have never heard of Whoopie Pies! They are the BEST! I think it is a Northeastern thing! I grew up in MA…DELISH! There is a company out of ME called Wicked Woopies…sooo good!!
i made some whoopie but instead of the cream filling i put in some vanilla ice cream…they turned out absolutely delicious!
thanks for the increadible ideas!!!
I got this book as a gift recently and just wrote a post about some classic chocolate and buttecream whoopie pies! So delicious…
I am a HUGE fan who’s living Down Under in Australia. Last week in the Melbourne “Herald Sun” paper, they had an article introducing whoopie pies to the Aussies. Growing up near Amish country in Pa, I LOVE whoopie pies and it was sort of funny to see them as exotic and new. Can’t wait to try your choc/peanut butter ones. (The Aussies don’t mix chocolate and peanut butter either!) They look YUM-MO!!!
Just recently I’ve been hearing about these woopies that have moved to cupcakes. I have to try them! :)
We call these Gobs in Pennsylvania! The Amish would sell them at their fruit stands. YUMMY!
We call them gobs in Western PA and they are very very tasty! I love them!
I am sure, that the whoopie pies of chocolate with dulce de leche, would remain brilliant!!
—–
Estoy segura, que los whoopie pies de chocolate con dulce de leche quedarían geniales!!
This cookbook was featured on Good Morning America this morning! Emerill had it as one of the best for summer!
Being in New England they are pretty common. I found another book (Making Whoopies) that was all about whoopie pies. It included a Gluten Free version I made for friends. Can’t wait to try other versions!
OMG, these look so real. All of your stuff just so perfect!
Oh man. I LOVE whoopie pies–especially pumpkin with cream cheese filling. But I don’t think it gets much better than peanut butter/chocolate…
Whoopie pies are very popular in my home state of VT, but no one knows them here in MN (where I’ve lived for the past 10 years). I love to bake and have tried to make them several times with only limited success. Instead, I resort to having my Mom make them every time she visits me (and freeze as many as possible to hide them from our kids!). She’s always made the classic chocolate ones, but now uses peanut butter frosting – A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.!!!!
My mom makes chocolate with white filling and calls them devil dogs, even though they’re round. All the whoopie pies I’ve seen around here are HUGE! So my mom’s are like miniature versions!
I ran out and bought this book! I’ve made the ‘traditional’ whoopies and the S’mores. Everyone said “Yummy”. Thanks for finding another fun and tasy idea for us!
I love Whoppie Pies! My grandmother used to make them and hers were the best! I’ve tried several different recipes but I haven’t found one that is like hers. I also recently made red velvet whoopie pies with a cream cheese filling–interesting combo.
I noticed when I looked at the pictures you have posted that there are recipes for a couple of different vegan versions. My son has an egg allergy so finding a book that has an egg free version of a baked goodie always makes my day! Thanks a ton for posting this book- it will arriving at my house very soon.
They’re a Maine thing…. every convenience store in Maine has them somewhere up front, next to the cash register, tempting me to their badness. My Pennsylvania friend makes a version she calls Gobs, but they’re the smaller, more petite cousin of the giant Maine behemoths. It might explain why I’m a giant Maine behemoth. Partially.
I have actually never made Whoopie Pies. Surprising thought because I LOVE to bake cookies and cakes. I saw this book at Williams and Sonoma and didn’t want to spend the extra money. Would love to have this book!
Iwill like to taste
I have heard of them. And love them. and would love to make some! Thanks for doing a giveaway.
I’ve heard of them, never made them, but would love to try them. The book looks like a lot of fun, thanks for posting the recipe for the chocolate ones so I can try them!
I just bought this book at Sur La Table. My best friend is from Johnstown, PA and she LOVES gobs (Silly, girl – using the wrong name)
Just made a batch. Very tasty! I love the salty peanut butter filling. I don’t think they’ll last till Monday!
Growing up in Pennsylvannia Dutch Country Whoopie Pies are very common and VERY tasty!! I have been making them for years.(And eating them) Besides the chocolate with white filling, my favorite is the Pumpkin with cream cheese filling!! MMMMM!
I’ve never heard of whoopie pies, but they look so good. I’m going to make some for my family. Your pictures make them look so good and fun to make. Where do you get dark muscovado sugar, I’ve never heard of it? We don’t have many grocery stores here in Madison, Indiana, mainly Walmart.
I’ve made a red velvet cake whoopie pie with peppermint cream cheese icing for christmas time. they were a big hit!
Whoopie pies are a really favorite treat here in Pennsylvania Dutch country. Can’t wait to try this recipe out on my grandsons. I know they’ll love it.
Those look SO yummy! Going to have to try them soon myself!
