I just tried out a book that’s all about Whoopie Pies. One of the writers of the book (Amy) is also the editor of my book, Cake Pops. Amy sent me a copy to check out and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
I made and fell in love with these sugar-filled sandwiches. They are delish! They’re like little cakes shaped like cookies… (but pie-like… not so much.)
It’s funny… when I gave these treats away, everyone loved them, but no one knew what to call them. Everyone asked “What are they?” It made me wonder how common they are in other places. Have you made whoopie pies? Heard of them? Seen one out in the wild?
No worries if you haven’t. Now you can make your very own. The book is organized for easy reading.
There’s a section devoted to cakes…
And a section devoted to fillings. Great for mixing and matching and making whoopies.
Lots and lots of whoopie.
Yum!
I decided to make the classic chocolate whoopie (big surprise) and paired it with peanut butter filling. The recipe called for dark brown sugar. I used this dark muscovado sugar instead because that’s all I had on hand. It made them extra tasty.
After you mix up the batter, drop it by spoonfuls on a parchment covered baking sheet.
After they bake and cool for a few minutes carefully remove them from the parchment paper.
Place them flat side up on a cookie rack. Then you can spoon the filling on…
Or pipe it on.
I like piping it on. It’s much more fun.
And prettier to look at.
Sandwich the filling between two of the cakes.
And press gently. That’s it.
Whoo-hooo for whoopies. Now go make some.
1 Tbsp of batter should make about 48 two-inch cakes or 24 pies. Recipe from Whoopie PiesChocolate Whoopie Pies
Ingredients
Chocolate Whoopie Pies
Salty Peanut Butter Filling
Instructions
Notes
2 Tbsp of batter should make about 30 four-inch cakes or 15 pies.
You can also roll the edges in sprinkles, chopped chocolate, nuts, etc. or in this case, peanut butter morsels.
Ummm… can I say these are just about the most fun things to eat. They’re so good you kinda feel like you’re being bad when you sink your teeth into them.
Want to make some whoopies?
Amy sent me a second copy to do with what I want. And I want to give it to one of you. Want it?
- Leave a comment on this post and tell me if you’ve ever made whoopies… Heard of them?… Know the best place to get them? Or just want to learn more about them.
- Deadline to enter is Monday, July 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET Sorry, Time’s Up. Winner announced below.
- One winner will be chosen at random and announced sometime Monday evening on this post.
Good luck!
Whoopie!!! We have a winner and boy are they in for a treat.
Congratulations Neddy (# 1413). Now you can try lots and lots of whoopie pies.
Hi Bakerella,
i’m in love with your site
each recepie is better than the other, if you could please help me, I’m brazillian and I was reading one of your recepies https://www.bakerella.com/make-your-cupcakes-pop/
and I really wanted to do it for a birthday party but here we don’t usually use crem cheese, I was wondering if there is anything I can use to replace the cream cheese
thank you very much and congratulations for the site
Hi! I am a new follower and think your creation looks delicious. I think I want to try those out this Saturday. How did you start out? I have a friend who loves baking. She’s only 19 and started about a year ago. You should check her blog out… mariesbakery.blogspot.com
My husband and I fed each other a whoopie pie on our wedding day instead of eating cake. I love them!
Lancaster County PA must be the home of Whoopie Pies. I cannot imagine anyone from these parts not knowing what there are. Actually since I lived here my whole life I had no idea they were not the norm everywhere.
In our family (from MA) we have always called them Devil Dogs. They are a family favorite – as a matter of fact, I’ll be whipping up a batch tonight for a party my sons are going to tomorrow. Being from New England, our filling recipe includes marshmallow Fluff (which is NOT marshmallow creme). I use a cookie scoop to make them, and also for the filling – which results in the perfect amount of filling for each one, with just enough left over to give you a little snack!
Whoopie Pies originate in Lancaster County (PA Dutch Country) and are a pretty common dessert there. Looks like the rest of the US is discovering their deliciousness.
I know the contest is closed and I have already left a comment. I wanted to give you a sincere THANK YOU! Whoopie Pies go back to my childhood and are a great tradition in our family. We only have known of pumpkin and chocolate versions. and now this book??? I am like a little kid anxiously awaiting my shipment from amazon! I am so so excited about his cook book! and this will be a great Christmas present for my siblings and mother! p.s. you are really great! really really great :) Thank you for sharing all your wonderfulness with the world.!
I had them from my grandmother’s house when I was like three, I remember my fingers being covered in chocolate from the cookie part and my g trying to teach me to lick my fingers, GREAT memory you triggered. I should make these w/my little ones, but they know how to totally get their fingers clean!!
We were in Lancaster, PA this summer and my hubby fell in love with Whoopie Pies while we were there. I made these last night and he said, ” these are dangerously good, one of the best things you’ve ever baked” thanks for sharing the recipe!!!
I purchased this book for my daughter because of this post. I know she and the grandbabies will have so much fun with it. THanks for bringing it to my attention. I found another cute little book called “S’Mores” while looking for this one. Not really a cookbook, but an idea book on how to be creative with s’mores. I might just have to get her that one, too. THey live 7 hours away, it’s fun to send her care packages. I also got her the whoopie pie pan, I thought it was a nice gift.
These look great will have to try them sometime.
I am the prooud owner of the Wild Whoopie Bakery in Sioux Falls, SD. Check out my website and stop in and visit if you’re in town. You can also have them shipped to you if you’re afraid to make them yourself….
Thanks for sharing this, Bakerella. I have previously made some whoopie pies with brown sugar and am happy to see there’s someone else who is into using muscovado because it IS a better alternative.
however i have a question:
muscovado = same quantity of brown sugar?
THANKS if anyone knows…
About two months ago, I saw the book at Sur la Table and bought it on the spot! I had never heard of or tasted a whoopie pie prior to that, but I love them now! Yummy!
I made these today. Yumm!
I lOVE them! My mom used to make them when we would go to the lake every summer. We found out if we dropped a peice that even the little chipmunks liked them!
In New Zealand we have ginger kisses which look the same but are ginger flavoured. You can also get chocolate kisses now
I’m so surprised that so many people haven’t heard of them or tasted them. I grew up on them. My Mom made them often. I’ve made them many times myself, but Mom’s were better. My Mom mostly made them during the 1950s thru 1970s. We lived in New Hampshire, but my Mom grew up in Conn. Not sure if she had them as a child. In my opinion, chocolate cake with white (vanilla) filling is the only combination that can truly be called a whoopie pie.
I make them all the time. my family loves them.
I made the chocolate/peanut butter whoopies you posted on Monday night and loved them so much I went out today to get the book! I can’t put it down, I’m trying to figure out which ones I want to make next : ) Thanks Bakerella!
We’ve made them for years, but we call them Black Moons and they’re bigger, about the size of a hamburger.
Hey Bakerella, I hope you get this comment because I really want these to come out right! I tried these yesterday, and while the cream was heavenly, the cake part was flat and crumbly- when I pressed the cakes together they cracked and fell apart. We could only eat them if I put them in the freezer- I followed the recipe exactly. What do you think I can do differently?
These look so fun! All of our friends get together on Mondays for dinner and I’m always the dessert, I think these are on the menu for next week!!!
I also know these to be called Gobs in the Western Pennsylvania area. They are extremely common there and often used as fundraisers for schools/churches etc. They are often seen as the size of a saucer! HUGGEE! And the best fillings are the pudding based filling. Not sure if this is in the book or not…
Not sure I’ve eaten a proper Whoopie, but… Devil Dogs are rather popular where I’m from. I had plenty of those. I imagine these would have moister cake and less greasy filling, though.
we call these home-made oreos
Saw some at the bakery today for the first time ever. So funny to log onto the computer tonight and see them on your site. I’ll have to give them a try. =)
i think here we just call them ALFAJORES.
That looks great. I love whoopie pies.
I LOVE whoopie pies. I work at a bakery in Newburyport, MA that makes whoopie pies, and only whoopie pies. They are a twist on the traditional, as in this awesome cookbook. They are known as The Whoopie around town. Check them out! http://www.chococoabaking.com
I make a super yummy (and vegan!) pumpkin whoopie pie with cream cheese frosting as the filling. Almost makes me long for fall!
They are a common desert among the Amish and Mennonites. I grew up eating many varieties of them.
I know the contest is over, but I just wanted to share that I got a copy of this book a few months ago and I absolutely it! I even made some and posted it on my blog:
http://pictureperfectpassionphood.blogspot.com/2010/04/vanilla-with-chocolate-buttercream.html
I just made them, and they’re SOOO yummy! IDK what I did wrong though, mine were REALLY fluffy and tall – not that it affected the taste though. :o)
Heard of them, make them about once a year and eat them all!
woah woah woah… I am shocked at how few people have heard of whoopie pies!! What is this?!! I’ve never made them homemade, but I always eat them homemade- it’s the only way to go! Those look great. I’m bummed I didn’t see this post in time to enter the contest.
These are SUPER yummy! I blogged about Amy’s chocolate chip whoopie pies with chocolate marshmallow creme frosting out of this same book! Have a peek at what I made!
http://overcookedblog.com/2010/07/03/i-wanna-do-bad-things-to-you…-chocolate-chip-whoopie-pies/
Great Post! Any tips to a new cooking blogger?
I just made them today. They turned out horrible. I dont know what happened. but they looked nothing like yours. Totally went flat. I was not happy.
I’ve been wanting to make these with my kids. They would have so much fun with this book.
I live in the whoopie pie capital of the world: Lancaster County, PA, where the Amish seem to make whoopie pies and sell them at every other roadside stand and market. :) I tried to make them once but failed to create the same taste and texture that most of the women who are native to this county have perfect.
Grew up in VA but spent our summers in northern Maine. They are sold everywhere up there – every restaurant, grocery, and gas station sells them! This post brought back so many memories…
I have heard of them and a friend post a Pumpkin Whoopie Pie recipe on a board I go to, have been wanting to try this. Your look divine. I would love to win that book. It would be one of those you sit down and read all the way through and then try to decide which one to try.
Those look soooo yummy! Would love love love to have the book! :)
I have made them with cake box mix however, @ Ralphs they sell them, here in the OC. My favorite is pumpkin with cream cheese filling. YUMMY> I will definitley try this recipe instead of the overly sweet cake box recipe.
I know the deadline is past, but I thought I would share with you what I know about whoppie pies.
I grew up in Lancaster, PA where, I am am told, the whoopie originated in the Amish communities. The story goes that when baking day was over, the Amish women often had left over cake batter and icing. The Amish are extremely frugal and never waste anything, thus these mini cakes were an ideal way to use up the leftovers. Whoopie pie’s soon became a favorite treat in their husbands and children’s lunchboxes. Tradition says that when they saw one in their lunch box they would shout “Whoopie!”
They are extremely common in Lancaster, PA. I would recommend the whoopie pies at The Bird-In-Hand Bake Shop on Gibbons Road. (It is amish run, but they do actually have a website). Also, Cherry Hill Orchards on Long Lane makes a mean whoopie pie.
There ya go. That’s what I got on whoopie pies. Hope you can visit some time!
PS- When the local Williams-Sonoma started carrying whoopie pie pans, as if it were some new idea, we all got a good chuckle out of it!
Made them, ate them and the verdict is………..YUMMY! Not to sweet and it’s a perfect balance between the peanut butter and chocolate. MMM MMM Good!
Wow! I have been wanting to try these for a while and was just waiting for a recipe I could trust to be the best! Now that I have one, I can’t wait to start baking!
I live in Maine and I think everyone in Maine knows what a whoopie pie is! Here’s one take on it’s history: http://www.ehow.com/about_5110533_history-whoopie-pie.html
WOW….all I can say. These look ah-mazing!
My grandma used to make whoopie pies all the time. She would mail them to us in big boxes and we’d gobble them up. It’s one of my best memories of her. I definitely need to buy this book.
I never heard them called whoopie pies…moon pies!
Oh my those look tasty. I now know what Im gonna make today. I just got a lot more hungry ;)
I’m from Mexico City and my girls and their friends are just waiting to taste them.Woopies…mmm¡¡¡
I’ve never even TRIED a whoopie pie. They’re not sold in Canada for some reason!! They look tempting…
I love whoopie pies. It has been awhile since I last made them. They tended to disappear from my kitchen at warp speed!
I made them last night…..Oh WOW!!! I’m thinkin’ I’m going to skip the next healthy cookbook I was planning on picking up and going for this!!
I live in Freeport, Maine, and we have a whoopie pie store here. That’s right, an entire store dedicated to selling whoopie pies. It’s Wicked Whoopies – http://wickedwhoopies.com/index.php – the owner & founder, Amy Bouchard, started out making whoopie pies in her kitchen and delivering them to people. Now she sells millions per year. I met her at a food festival a while back, where she was handing out mini whoopie pie samples. She was amazingly energetic (and thin, which I wouldn’t be if I made whoopie pies all day long). I made them once and my cake batter must’ve been too thin, as they spread out too much on the baking sheet. Will definitely have to check this book out!
When you post at midnight, and close the comments at 5 pm Eastern time, those of us who work, especially on the West coast, can’t even read your wonderful blog before the chance to comment in time to have a chance to participate in the drawing has passed.
Could you maybe close the comments Tuesday morning? That way, when people get home from work late (say, 10:30), they could eat their dinners (say, homemade pizza their wonderful husbands made for them at 8), and then sit down to read their Monday emails (say, at midnight), and whole drawings wouldn’t have opened and closed during their work days. . . . Just a thought.
Thanks.
Can’t find any vegetable shortening here in Perth, Australia, is there any substitute to it?
help, please? thanks!
I love whoopie pies. I am part of a clergy couple so need to have open house every couple of years. THis past year I made a huge variety of whoopie pies minitureized. THey were really cute and taseted wonderful A lot of people had never heard of whoopie pies before so we didn’t have many left over after the two hours.
Definitely a Maine dessert. I make the version my grandmother made (she was born 106 years ago). The filling involves a milk and flour mixture and is the very old fashioned and time consuming way to make them. I wonder if the book has the recipe. My kids ask me to make them once a year and I only make our family version with the chocolate cookies. They do not taste anything like Moonpies or Oreos – this filling has the most creamy texture. Delicious but very decedent. The ones sold in stores and restaurants in Maine tend to have frosting or marshmallow fluff filling and it just isn’t the same.
Congrats Neddy! :)
I grew up on Whoopie Pies and they’re still a favorite across all generations in my family. So glad to know about the book – my niece will LOVE that for Christmas. To her, Whoopie PIes are THE BOMB. :-)
I know I missed the contest, but whoopie pies are awesome. Here in Central PA they are Whoopie Pies, out in Western PA they are called “Gobs”, BUT there is actually a Whoopie Pie Festival this Sept (http://www.whoopiepiefestival.com) out in Lancaster County. Sounds like lots of fun :)
My mother taught me to make them how her mother taught her to make them, and I am 38 yrs old, soooo…Whoopies have been around a while. My grand mothers cakes were these decadent moist rounds made from Cocoa Powder and the filling…Ugh, the filling…was this concoction made with crisco, vanilla and powder sugar. To. Die. For. I think I am going to make a batch of these originals tonight!!!
I missed the deadline .. rats . today is my birthday and I LOVE whoopie pies .. put a candle in one and sing me Happy Birthday any time!! Congrats to the winner and enjoy your Whoopied fun!
These are called Gobs and originated in Somerset/ Johnstown PA area /
Very common here in Massachusetts. Chocolate with vanilla marshmallow filling was one of my grandmother’s standards. Really well made ones are moist and sticky, you get chocolate cake all over you and it’s fantastic.
Was so excited after reading this recipe that I went out and got ingredients and made them tonight! WOW – I can’t believe the “cookie” part is so cake like and the peanut butter filling is fantastic! I’ll definitely be putting this book on my wish list!
I’ve eaten them but never attempted to make ’em.
I haven’t had a Whoopie pie before, but the look delish. I will certainly try this recipe.
These look yummy! Would you mind telling me what size tip you used to pipe the filling? Thanks! :)
I’ve heard of them. I have bought some from Trader Joes grocery store. were a little dry but very good. I hope when i make these from the book that I do it succesfully so they are twice as good. I was in Whole Foods the other day and they sell them there too. I haven’t had those ones but they looked good. I can’t wait to make these….too bad i was too late to enter the contest for the book. looks like i will be making a trip to the bookstore!
yes I have made them and EATEN them I have made pumpkin whoopie pies that are sooo good (a taste of home recipe) I would love to win this thanks for a chance!
i’ve heard of them and *defiantly* want to make them after seeing these tantalising photo’s!
YUM! My mom has been making woopie pies since I was a kid, she uses marshmallow cream (Fluff) in her filling. I’m from Pennsylvania, and we like to buy them from the Amish bakers at the local farmers markets when we are visiting PA in the summer.
I want to try those, they look delicious!
A friend of ours from PA used to always make them! I would love a recipe book so I can do my own.
What a great giveaway!?
These are adorable. I am going to try to convert it to a vegan version and make mint filling rather than peanut butter… mmm…
Love banana ones!
I’ve never made them and I must say, I hadn’t heard of them until I started watching Paula Deen. Would love to try!
I DO know what they are and they look GREAT!!! Please pick me Random Integer Generator!!!!
Of course I’ve heard of and made whoopie pies – I’m from Maine! They’re VERY well known here – they’re a New England tradition (specifically Maine).
“Whoopie pies are considered a New England phenomenon and a Pennsylvania Amish tradition. They’re one of Maine’s best known and most loved comfort foods. Mainers will even claim that they were weaned on whoopie pies. In Maine, these treats are more like a cake than a pie or a cookie, as they are very generously sized (about hamburger size). they’re so hug that you’ll want to share one with a friend. A big glass of milk is almost mandatory when eating a whoopie pie.”
From what’s cooking America!
I’ve heard of them, but never had them. I assumed they were like moon pies, (which are icky IMO). But these look fantastic!
I can’t want to try!
My mom (and grandma) use to make wooppie cookies. However, my grandma passed away and my mom claims that she doesn’t know what happened to the recipe. Would love to learn how to make them so that I can share with my daughters.
never heard of whoopie pies – but I betcha I’m gonna like ’em!
Heard of them, never tried them, would LOVE to learn more about them:)
I love to make whoopie pies.
I have never made or heard of whoopie pies but they sound delicious!! I WANT TO MAKE THEM!! :)

LOOOOVEE THEM! Soo delicious! I need to attempt to make them though, I bet they’ll be even more delicous!
We have many places that sell them around here. I love pumpkin whoopie pies with cream cheese filling! Yum!
Homemade chocolate cake with green mint filling – best whoopie pies ANYWHERE!!
I’d love the chance to add some new recipes to my repertoire!
I’ve had them before. My mom’s neighbor makes them a lot. She brought over carrot cake like ones last year. they were great.
My grandmother use to make amazing cookies that we’d turn into whoopie pies! I still can’t replicate those cookies; but my version isn’t bad. ^_^
They are a Maine thing, and I’m having them at my rehearsal dinner…but I’d love to make them too!
They look so similiar to a moon pie! The only thing missing is being dipped in chocolate! YUM! I think I will be making a batch of these in the morning = ) Thanks for sharing the recipe!!!
Had ’em, loved ’em, ate ’em! The best ones I ever had were in Boston. Delicious!
I’d never heard of them before! I’m sooo making them this weekend, even if my diet gets pushed aside by them!
Heard of them, never had one, never made one. Ask me again tomorrow, and the answer might be different… :)
i haven’t made them, but my sister makes them all the time and they are yummy!
Oh boy… now those look delicious! They totally remind me of Oreo Caksters, but probably taste 1000x better.
they are the perfect blend between cookie and cake, and with frosting to boot! i made some red velvet whoopie pies and they were such a big hit – looking forward to learning more techniques and combo’s.
I’ve not only heard of them, I’ve made them! Banana Whoopies are my fav-o-rite!
They look delicious! I think I’m going to have to try them out! ;)
I have heard of them and love to make them. I’m a bit of a purist and have only ever made chocolate ones with the tradtional insides. Though I ‘d love to try out other flavor combos!
Last fall I made pumpkin whoopies with cream cheese filling. Delish!!
Bummer…I missed the deadline. But, I have had and made whoopies. We call them devil dogs, some people call them gobs. I have this book on my amazon wish list!
Never made them, but I have eaten them. So freaking good!!
I have heard of them and eaten them ….BUT haven’t made them.
Did you know that you can buy the pan to make them in at Crate & Barrell?!!! Whoopie Pie Pan: $12.95
http://www.crateandbarrel.com/search.aspx?query=whoppie%20pan
I have never made whoopies but I have had one and they are delicious!
I loooove whoopie pies! They were a huge part of my growing up on the East Coast! I didn’t realize that no one on in California knew about them until I moved out here and people thought I was crazy. I think they’ll overtake cupcakes one day!! So delicious!
Can’t wait to make these for a friend that is a huge fan!
I have always wanted to try Whoopie Pies, but have never done it. I’ve seen recipes for pumpkin Whoopie pies that look incredible. I’d love to have this book! :)
I’ve never had a woopie pie, but would love to make them!!!
I haven’t ever made any, but eaten plenty. My dad loves them, so I’d make some for him.
I had heard of them, and then tried them, and have now been on the search for good recipes to try making them!!! The book looks awesome, would love to get it!!
Lame! I don’t get to read your blog until after 5!
Loved these since my earliest memories. we called them “poopie” pies :)
Never had them! :O
But they look soooooo good!
:D
Never made ’em, but there was a big article in the foods section of our local paper (the Oregonian) recently about them. Featured the same book. They remind me a lot of your cake-mix cookies w/cream cheese filling which, by the way, I LOVE!
They look de-lish!!! I’ve seen them before but never had one.. I’ve got a day off coming up and think it would be a blast to make them with my little one!!
LLet’s just say how depressed I am now for missing the deadline on this contest. My boyfriend and is family and from Maine and are hugeee whoopie pie fans and sadly you can’t find whoopie pies in you local grocery store in florida! I think you should highly consider me for winning this book!!
The first time I made whoopie pies I had accidentally mixed the salt with the sugar and no one ever tried to eat the cream in the center, they just slided it off and ate the cookies.
I’ve never made them but they’re like oreo cakesters but healthier. =) I want to make them, I’m sure they’ll be a hit with my friends!
These look really fun to make. I have never heard of them before! They look yummy.
Oh my, I almost found myself getting ready to lick and bite the computer screen! I have heard of these delicious fat filled “pies” but never wrapped my lips around any of them.I thank you for the recipe, I will definitely be making these in the near future!! I’d love to see what other recipes are in the book….thanks for the opportunity to win it! (fingers crossed)
mmmmmmm! those look way to yummy!
They look so appealing…will try just based on the pictures! Thx.
I’ve never even heard of them, but ooooh, chocolate and peanut butter is my biggest weakness. I’m definitely going to try them!
I’ve never had them – but I’m going to try to make them tonight!!!
I made them for my open house when trying to sell my house. They are a big hit at my house.
Oh I have had whoopie pies and they were red velvet whoopie’s with cream cheese filling , and boy were they yummy!
I’ve heard of them and have always wanted to try them. They look like fun!
I am drooling!!!! yum!

Just found your site and feel like the luckiest person alive!!! Can’t wait for my daughters first birthday to serve up some whoopies!!!! My family will be so impressed! And she will get her own whoopie to chow on! Thanks for the recipe!!
I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE WHOOPIE!! Pies, that is!! LOL!! I have heard of them, but I’ve never attempted to make them. The peanut butter filling sounds wonderful!
Hey there! I’m from CT and LOVE whoopie pies! They are all over the northeast – you can find great WPs at farm stands and sugar houses up and down VT :) I love them but haven’t made them yet… that is yet! I plan to make them for a housewarming party next month :) Thank you so much for the recipe, I always wondered how to make them !
They look delicious!! I wonder how they got the name…
Love them! Never made them. The book looks very interesting!
LOVE LOVE LOVE! whoopie pies! The best ones I’ve eaten were shipped in from a tiny bakery in Maine. They were definitely worth the wait. Can’t wait to try these!
My kids LOVE them, I only like them when the filling isn’t shortening-y is that a word? well you know what I mean. The best place to get them that i know of is a troop 42 boyscout bake sale. . . someone’s a mean whoopie pie baker.
My youngest daughter (age 11) has just started her own baking business – first order today ! Whoopies would be such a great addition to her product line!!
Great post! We just got back from our first trip to the Maine/Cape Cod area and they are everywhere. We had a HUGE one, chocolate cake with vanilla cream at Haraseeket Lobster Shack. It was yummy!
I’ve heard of them but never eaten or made any. They look yummy!!
I’ve had some at Corner Bakery and while they looked great, they were much too sweet. I think making your own would be a great idea, especially when you can mix and match different cookie and filling combinations!
i just bought this book for a friend. would love one for myself. I LOVE whoopie pies. Great job to the designer.
I love whoopie pies!! They are so scrum-diddly-umptious!! But I have yet to make them myself… I would love to try! :)
Never heard of them! they look so great
I am so excited about this post! I tried making “healthy” whoopie pies and they were terrible. I can’t wait to try this recipe! Yay!
I LOVE them, I have made red velvet whoopies! Williams-Sonoma sells a pan to make them easier that’s nonstick… I caved and bought it :)
LOVE whoopie pies! My late grandmother used to make them all the time but I’ve never tried on my own. Totally want to now. Those look AWESOME!!
I’ve never heard of whoopies but they sound delicious! It kind of looks like the oatmeal pies my mom used to put in my lunch as a kid, loved those so I’m sure I would love these!
Never made them, but in the south, we ate somthing similar we called Moon Pies w/a marshmallow filling.
Yesterday was our wedding anniversary! I’d love to be making some Whoopie (Pies)!!
I want these now! I would love to try and make them!
I have never made or eaten them but I heard about them on a show (I don’t remember the name) and thought mmmm.
I would love to make these. I have made something similar, but these look delish!!
I have been making whoopie pies since I was a little girl. They were always the most time consuming recipe as a kid, but oh so worth it. I crave them all the time. My recipe is for a plain chocolate cake with white cream filling (made with shortening). They’re now the thing my nephews beg to bake with me. The name, however, I never liked. I thought one of my relatives must have come up with it. Who knew they were authentic? Whoopie Pies are my Mascot!!!!
I made them last year for my son’s 4th birthday. He just liked the name, and cracked up every time someone said “whoopie”.
Oh I love Whoopie Pies they don’t have them here in Utah to much so having a cookbook so I could make my own would be the BEST.
What a fun ideal…..I will have to make some with my kiddos. They have never had one!
super cute!!! and totally yummy!!
I have seen them in the stores before.. and they are really good. but also dipped in something. not sure what they are called though. would love to learn how to make them.
Never made these before but they were just featured in my local paper in the foodday section. They only way the might be better is if they were dipped in chocolate
I made them once, after hearing of them through blogs. I loved them and would totally put this book to good use!!
I really want to try and make s’more whoopie pies. I saw those making their rounds on the blogosphere last week. Yum!
i’ve always wanted to make whoopie pies! And I have definitely eaten them. YUMMM!
i’ve certainly heard of them, and they serve them at my college sometimes, but i’ve never made them.
I’ve heard of them!!! but never made them but I would scream whoopie if I won. :)
These are a staple in New England, but I think may have originated in Pennsylvania. They are wonderful. I finally tried my hand at making them last Christmas and had so much fun trying different flavors-I added cinnamon flav. to the filling for one batch, added peppermint to another. I made chocolate, plain, and added food coloring to make them festive for the holidays. Would love the book, though for new ideas.
I’ve definitely heard of whoopie pies, having grown up in New England. But I’ve never made them myself. I’m going to have to try your chocolate/peanut butter variety! Yum!
I love red velvet ones!
I have never had one in my life. I don’t think they have these in Canada? I can imagine how they are though. Cakey soft cookie ontop. MmMmm!
YUMM!! I’ve been meaning to try the ones that they sell at Cracker Barrell, but I’m always so full after eating there that I tend to forget!
I love to eat, here in mexico and I’ve never managed to learn to make love to me =)
Yummm – they look a bit like Ginger Kisses :)
Love them…I could be wrong, but think they are a southern thing…
I had never heard of these before last year, when I saw this amazing cookie magazine in the grocery store. I made red velvet whoopie pies with a minty filling. They were the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten.
I’ve never had them, but a co-worker used to make them and bring them to work early in the morning. They were always all gone by the time I got to work, so I know they must be good! Guess that means the early worker gets the whoopie!
I have always loved whoopie pies. since years ago i bought
one in penn. The amish people have alwaya made them.
Although i have only seen them in chocolate.
I’ve never made them but certainly heard of them. When I was in college, they were sort of like a mascot of the fraternity where I hung out. Isn’t that weird? They always had them at any party. Anyway, I’d love to try out making them!
I have heard of them from the internet but they are definitely not something we have in Australia. Would love to give them a try though ;)
heard of them and ate them
but never made them!!
they look so cute though!
I’ve never made them before, or heard the term whoopie pies for them, but I definitely want to whip up a batch!

I definitely love whoppie pies! How can you not love a treat that has a cup of shortening in the filling! There is even a Whoppie Pie Festival in PA!
Never made them or heard of them… but they look somewhat familiar? Like something I’d like to try :)
