I just tried out a book that’s all about Whoopie Pies. One of the writers of the book (Amy) is also the editor of my book, Cake Pops. Amy sent me a copy to check out and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
I made and fell in love with these sugar-filled sandwiches. They are delish! They’re like little cakes shaped like cookies… (but pie-like… not so much.)
It’s funny… when I gave these treats away, everyone loved them, but no one knew what to call them. Everyone asked “What are they?” It made me wonder how common they are in other places. Have you made whoopie pies? Heard of them? Seen one out in the wild?
No worries if you haven’t. Now you can make your very own. The book is organized for easy reading.
There’s a section devoted to cakes…
And a section devoted to fillings. Great for mixing and matching and making whoopies.
Lots and lots of whoopie.
Yum!
I decided to make the classic chocolate whoopie (big surprise) and paired it with peanut butter filling. The recipe called for dark brown sugar. I used this dark muscovado sugar instead because that’s all I had on hand. It made them extra tasty.
After you mix up the batter, drop it by spoonfuls on a parchment covered baking sheet.
After they bake and cool for a few minutes carefully remove them from the parchment paper.
Place them flat side up on a cookie rack. Then you can spoon the filling on…
Or pipe it on.
I like piping it on. It’s much more fun.
And prettier to look at.
Sandwich the filling between two of the cakes.
And press gently. That’s it.
Whoo-hooo for whoopies. Now go make some.
1 Tbsp of batter should make about 48 two-inch cakes or 24 pies. Recipe from Whoopie PiesChocolate Whoopie Pies
Ingredients
Chocolate Whoopie Pies
Salty Peanut Butter Filling
Instructions
Notes
2 Tbsp of batter should make about 30 four-inch cakes or 15 pies.
You can also roll the edges in sprinkles, chopped chocolate, nuts, etc. or in this case, peanut butter morsels.
Ummm… can I say these are just about the most fun things to eat. They’re so good you kinda feel like you’re being bad when you sink your teeth into them.
Want to make some whoopies?
Amy sent me a second copy to do with what I want. And I want to give it to one of you. Want it?
- Leave a comment on this post and tell me if you’ve ever made whoopies… Heard of them?… Know the best place to get them? Or just want to learn more about them.

I can’t imagine NOT knowing what whoopie pies are! I’m in PA Dutch Country and they are everywhere! They best ones I ever had though were homemade and started out as a recipe-going-downhill-fast and with some modifications ended up being delicious! The problem is I have no idea how to replicate them!
I made them once when I was growing up. I used a cream cheese filling. These look so much better than mine ever did. We called them either whoopie pies or moon pies. The book looks so inviting. I may have to give whoopie pies another try.
I just had a chocolate with PB filling whoopie from a roadside farm shop in rural PA this last weekend and it was quite possibly the best thing I have ever eaten. I haven’t made them before, but you can be sure I’ll try now that I have the recipe!
I’ve never made Whoopie Pies, but I remember them fondly from my youth. I had two favorite Great-Uncles in Tennessee who loved to take their little Northerner Grand-Niece to the country store when I visited. I was allowed to get “anything I wanted” which generally meant a big bag of penny candy, a Moon Pie (chocolate covered whoopie pie), and a Chocolate Soldier. :)
oh my goodness…the graham cracker whoopie pies sound amazing!!
I’ve heard of them, but I haven’t actually seen one in the flesh before. :) They look fantastic though! I’ll have to make these sometime soon! Thanks for sharing!

A good friend of mine made the chocolate ones with peanut butter filling. I died and went to heaven. I had never been a big fan of them before that but after trying them out, I have been hooked ever since. I’d love to make all different kinds but never have so the book looks really interesting.

I grew up in MD where there’s a big Amish population so I’ve eaten many a whoopie pie. Sadly for my hips! I’ve made them a lot and have them on my menu, but would love to know the Amish get their cake so soft. I’ve tried various recipes and fiddled with my own and they always come out more dense. It’d be fun to test the recipes in this book!
I’ve never made them but they kind of remind me of Oreo cakesters. Yum!

I’ve definitely heard of them! My mom and dad are from MA and I think it’s an east coast thing because everyone back there knows about them, but no one does out here in CA where we currently live. They’re my dad’s favorite dessert though and the family recipe we have is just delish! I’d love to check out the book though and see what other recipes are out there. :)
I wanna learn more!
I have heard of whoopie pies but never made them. Well, I sort of have. I make wedding cakes. When I level a small cake, I take 2 of the “tops” that are domed on one side and flat on the other side. Then I fill with extra icing. It’s sort of like a giant whoopie pie. My husband LOVES it.
didn’t know they were called whoopies! Thanx for the recipe!

I was pretty sure I knew what they were, and I was right! It kind of never occurred to me however that they would come in varieties so yummy! I think I’ve seen pre-packaged ones that are usually chocolate cake with vanilla but I might be making that up.
I went to the store with my dad the other day and I saw some and pointed them out to him. I thought they had a funny name! I’ve never eaten them or made them, though. It’d be nice to try!
I love woopie pies. I like all the different variations, but I especially love them with ice cream fillings!
I have ate them, but never made them. The book as such a fun look to it. It totally goes against my no sugar idea. That idea is meant to be thrown out for this book of yummy treats:)

I’ve never made them, but I’ve had them from Corner Bakery, and Starbucks a loooon time ago.
I made them accidentally once. I wanted cookies but decided that using a recipe was silly. They came out cakey so I made em into woopie pies. It was a good mistake.
Best whoopie pies I’ve had were while on a trip in Lancaster, PA. I would love to try to make my own!
Oh my want. Want want want. I’ve helped my friend make some that she calls “homemade oreo cookies” but are really whoopie pies (crazy girl) but that’s it. Mmmmm.

I have been curious about Whoopie Pies for some time now but have never had on! :)
Tried them once, and it was a mess! The recipe called for making the cookies heart-shaped, which would have been a snap had I been anywhere near a piping bag. Forming decent heart-shapes using only spoons and toothpicks is a PAIN…it took me 2 hours! They were delicious though :) Would love to to try again with better recipes and better equipment!
Weirdly enough, I made chocolate whoopie pies with peanut butter filling over the weekend! I cheated, though, and used a cake mix ;) I’ll have to try your recipe, it looks awesome!

They are a Maine/New England delicacy! I’m asked to make them at least once a month. I fill mine with “devil dog” filling. Yum-O! Note – any filling with dairy should be refrigerated, especially in summer.
