I just tried out a book that’s all about Whoopie Pies. One of the writers of the book (Amy) is also the editor of my book, Cake Pops. Amy sent me a copy to check out and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
I made and fell in love with these sugar-filled sandwiches. They are delish! They’re like little cakes shaped like cookies… (but pie-like… not so much.)
It’s funny… when I gave these treats away, everyone loved them, but no one knew what to call them. Everyone asked “What are they?” It made me wonder how common they are in other places. Have you made whoopie pies? Heard of them? Seen one out in the wild?
No worries if you haven’t. Now you can make your very own. The book is organized for easy reading.
There’s a section devoted to cakes…
And a section devoted to fillings. Great for mixing and matching and making whoopies.
Lots and lots of whoopie.
Yum!
I decided to make the classic chocolate whoopie (big surprise) and paired it with peanut butter filling. The recipe called for dark brown sugar. I used this dark muscovado sugar instead because that’s all I had on hand. It made them extra tasty.
After you mix up the batter, drop it by spoonfuls on a parchment covered baking sheet.
After they bake and cool for a few minutes carefully remove them from the parchment paper.
Place them flat side up on a cookie rack. Then you can spoon the filling on…
Or pipe it on.
I like piping it on. It’s much more fun.
And prettier to look at.
Sandwich the filling between two of the cakes.
And press gently. That’s it.
Whoo-hooo for whoopies. Now go make some.
1 Tbsp of batter should make about 48 two-inch cakes or 24 pies. Recipe from Whoopie PiesChocolate Whoopie Pies
Ingredients
Chocolate Whoopie Pies
Salty Peanut Butter Filling
Instructions
Notes
2 Tbsp of batter should make about 30 four-inch cakes or 15 pies.
You can also roll the edges in sprinkles, chopped chocolate, nuts, etc. or in this case, peanut butter morsels.
Ummm… can I say these are just about the most fun things to eat. They’re so good you kinda feel like you’re being bad when you sink your teeth into them.
Want to make some whoopies?
Amy sent me a second copy to do with what I want. And I want to give it to one of you. Want it?
- Leave a comment on this post and tell me if you’ve ever made whoopies… Heard of them?… Know the best place to get them? Or just want to learn more about them.
- Deadline to enter is Monday, July 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET Sorry, Time’s Up. Winner announced below.
- One winner will be chosen at random and announced sometime Monday evening on this post.
Good luck!
Whoopie!!! We have a winner and boy are they in for a treat.

The first time I learned of Whoopie Pies I was working in a cafe where we did all our own baking. I have the feeling they are more well-known in the USA but here in Canada they were welcomed with open arms. I have only made them once since leaving that job about 8 years ago but they are so yummy I have often been tempted to try them again, especially now that I have kids who I know would go nuts for them! That book looks amazing!
I love experimenting with baking and trying new recipes. This looks fun and good to eat too! Great idea for a small get together or party.
Oh yummy! They look like oatmeal creme pies but 100,000% better! Yep, i’m sold!
I have heard of them but never made or eaten them. Anything with chocolate and peanut butter is sinful!

I’ve heard of whoopie pies before but never realized what they actually looked like. They remind me of circle shaped “Devil Dogs”. Anyone ever heard of those??
A few months ago my husband came home from work and said people had discussed whoppie pies. He had never heard of them. I had, but had never made them before, so I did a web search. The ones I tried were red whoppie pies – you know, like red cake or cupcakes. They were pretty good. I like the looks of the book – it would be fun to try the different kinds.

I have never made them, but have heard of them! And now that I have the recipe for the peanut butter filling I will have to! What a fun book, the endless possibilites of combinations!
My mom made these all the time when I was growing up. I didn’t really like them but the principle at my teeny tiny school loved them so every year on my birthday I had to bring these in as my birthday treat. :-) My mom says they taste WAY better frozen. I hope you read this comment so you know to try them that way. (the chocolate/white filling ones at least)
I’d love the book. I want to try some of the other flavors!
I’ve heard of them but I’ve never made them or had the pleasure of eating them. They look like so much fun!

I tried my very first whoopie pie a few weeks ago – after having never heard of them in my life, all of a sudden they’re popping up everywhere, and I’m very much in favor!

I first heard of woopie pies in 1993 from a fellow army wife who grew up in Maine. Loved them and had to make them for myself. Have only had the classic chocolate woopie pie, but would love to try different flavors.
Adorable and delicious!
I LOVE WOOPIE PIES!! Ever since I have seen them made on Martha Stewart I have made a ton of them. For christmas I made red velvet with peppermint filling. They were a hit at my cookie exchange party. I would love to have this book!!
I have heard of them. I have had a recipe bookmarked for ages that I still haven’t gotten around to trying. I need to!
I LOVE making these…!
I love whoopie pies! I like to make them really big and give them away as gifts.
I tried Whoppie Pies at a Restaurant in central Oregon. They were really yummy, and I would love to make some myself!
Never made them or heard of them, but they look delicious!!!
Where i come from (Pennsylvania) they are called GOBS. And i make them all the time… but only the standard chocolate and white flour/milk base filing. I’m excited to hear that there are other filling options. I’ve thought you could make other cake options work too. Here’s a tip… because the ‘dough’ for the cookies is more like cake batter and I like things to be even – i pipe that onto the parchment sheets. So easy! When i make them for a party i make them mini – easy to eat in one bit. When i bake them for home, i make them big and freeze them individually. I throw one in my hubby’s lunch in the morning and it is thawed to perfection by the time he eats it.
LOVE THESE… must get this book!
I have heard of them….somewhere. I’ve never had any before. They look really good!
I’ve seen them before but have never tried them. I will have to attempt to make them one day.

I love whoopies!!! Ive made chocolate with a marsmallow filling and pumpkin with a cream cheese filling. YUMMMM.
It’s hard to believe so many people don’t know what whoopie pies are. They used to be in every gas station and mini-mart. Although maybe the people you gave them to didn’t know what to call them because you’ve made them so small. Generally, they’re at least as big around as a hamburger bun. Otherwise, they’re just sandwich cookies.
never made them, but found a great one at the farm at the grove in los angeles.
never heard of them til now. I will try them. the possibilites are endless. when will the cookbook be out??? when will your cookbook be out?????
Of course I’ve heard of Whoopies! Love to eat them. Can’t wait to make them!!! YUM!
Have never made them, don’t think I’ve ever even tasted one. They’re pretty much everywhere here in Boston; while I had heard of them while growing up in western NY, I never really saw them anywhere.

I’ve heard of them, made them and eaten too many of them! :) Made them (basic recipe with white cream filling) for a school bake sale and they flew off the table!
I haven’t made these but I’d really love to! I imagine they may be called “pies” because they are similar to Moon Pies.
Whoopie pies are great!! They are like two cupcake tops with frosting between instead of on top! genius.
Whoopie pies are on my “to make” list. I LOVE them. And what could be better than chocolate and peanut butter. So many fillings, so many cakes, so little time!
I had never heard of them until I moved to Indiana. Everyone here thinks I’m odd because I have never heard of whoopie pies or eaten one. I might have to try them now that I have seen those wonderful pictures!
Never made Whoopie Pies, myself, but a bakery near my house called Zachary’s has a weekly “Whoopie Pie Wednesday.” They go quick–with good reason! I’m crazy about their Hazelnut Whoopie Pies… YUM!
