I just tried out a book that’s all about Whoopie Pies. One of the writers of the book (Amy) is also the editor of my book, Cake Pops. Amy sent me a copy to check out and I couldn’t be more excited for her.
I made and fell in love with these sugar-filled sandwiches. They are delish! They’re like little cakes shaped like cookies… (but pie-like… not so much.)
It’s funny… when I gave these treats away, everyone loved them, but no one knew what to call them. Everyone asked “What are they?” It made me wonder how common they are in other places. Have you made whoopie pies? Heard of them? Seen one out in the wild?
No worries if you haven’t. Now you can make your very own. The book is organized for easy reading.
There’s a section devoted to cakes…
And a section devoted to fillings. Great for mixing and matching and making whoopies.
Lots and lots of whoopie.
Yum!
I decided to make the classic chocolate whoopie (big surprise) and paired it with peanut butter filling. The recipe called for dark brown sugar. I used this dark muscovado sugar instead because that’s all I had on hand. It made them extra tasty.
After you mix up the batter, drop it by spoonfuls on a parchment covered baking sheet.
After they bake and cool for a few minutes carefully remove them from the parchment paper.
Place them flat side up on a cookie rack. Then you can spoon the filling on…
Or pipe it on.
I like piping it on. It’s much more fun.
And prettier to look at.
Sandwich the filling between two of the cakes.
And press gently. That’s it.
Whoo-hooo for whoopies. Now go make some.
1 Tbsp of batter should make about 48 two-inch cakes or 24 pies. Recipe from Whoopie PiesChocolate Whoopie Pies
Ingredients
Chocolate Whoopie Pies
Salty Peanut Butter Filling
Instructions
Notes
2 Tbsp of batter should make about 30 four-inch cakes or 15 pies.
You can also roll the edges in sprinkles, chopped chocolate, nuts, etc. or in this case, peanut butter morsels.
Ummm… can I say these are just about the most fun things to eat. They’re so good you kinda feel like you’re being bad when you sink your teeth into them.
Want to make some whoopies?
Amy sent me a second copy to do with what I want. And I want to give it to one of you. Want it?
- Leave a comment on this post and tell me if you’ve ever made whoopies… Heard of them?… Know the best place to get them? Or just want to learn more about them.
- Deadline to enter is Monday, July 12 at 5:00 p.m. ET Sorry, Time’s Up. Winner announced below.
- One winner will be chosen at random and announced sometime Monday evening on this post.
Good luck!
Whoopie!!! We have a winner and boy are they in for a treat.

I’ve never made them, but I’ve “heard” of them… kinda. Doesn’t Hostess make a version? Or used to? I could just be thinking I’d heard of them… nonetheless, the homemade ones would be best!

In Houston, Central Market (best groceries ever) makes both a large and mini Whoopie that is fabulous. I’ve seen, but never tried, the Whoopie kits at Williams Sonoma. I would relish the opportunity to make Whoopies for myself. Love them!
In all of the places I have lived in Canada, I have never heard of Whoopie pies. I haven’t seen them in my rare travels to the US either, but I have seen recipes. This recipe makes me want to stay home and bake simply to make and try these. Peanut butter and chocolate, what a magical combination!

Whoopie pies are a classic treat where I grew up (PA Amish Country). I would love to see if these recipes stack up to the recipes from home!

I’ve heard of them but have never made them. I will for sure have to try the chocolate/peanut butter ones….YUMMY!
I love whoopie pies. The first one I ever had came from Sweetie Pies in Napa, CA. I have also had them from Woodlands Market in Kentfield, CA. Oh yeah, and from a little place called my kitchen. I started to take pictures of the process but got distracted after I assembled one….so delicious.
I’m from southwestern Pennsylvania and my family makes these all the time – we call the Gobs and usually stick to the chocolate and vanilla or pumpkin and vanilla varieties.

Never heard of them, but I’m excited to make some…probably today!
Whoopie pies have always been a staple in our house because of how easy and tasty they are. Our favorite is chocolate with a strawberry filling.
Whoopie Pies are love. I’ve grown up on them, we have them at every family get together! I’ve never made them but my favorite place to get them is at an Amish stand at the market. Freshly made and scrumptious!
I’ve heard of Whoopie Pies but I’ve never made them before.
I have eaten them – deeeeelish!!! Now I’d love to make them!
Whoopie Pies are fun to say and fun to eat. I’ve made them before – but will have to revisit them with this new recipe. Also, I’ve never thought to roll the sides in toppings…
I’ve heard of them and ate them, but never made them. A friend of mine made pumpkin ones for Halloween last year, didn’t get to have them, but heard they were amazing! I’ve been wanting to try…among the many other things, just haven’t gotten to it yet :)
Yum! Never had one, but I’m pretty sure I would like to make some!
I’ve had and made these before. Where I come from, however, they’re called “Gobs.” Not sure why. My favorite is pumpkin with cream cheese frosting! :)
Ohhhhh those look good! I’ve never heard of whoopies before but i would love to try one!
I’ve never made a whoopie pie, but I’ve eaten the pre-made ones. These look so much better!
Heard of them never made them, but would love to try!
I have made red velvet whoopie pies. I have to say I was not too impressed with that recipe, but I am very willing to give it another go!
I have made some, and they were great! They were from Southern Living magazine, so you know they had to be good!
Random!!!! I’ve never had them before, but i do want to make em now that i’ve seen it.
I LOVE WHOOPIE PIES. They bring back great memories.
I’m from So Calif, I’ve only heard of them…looks like they are so versatile-i think a mocha/espresso flavored whoopie would be delish!
I love whoopie pies, although I was always too scared to make them! I thought the process was much more difficult than what you laid out here, now I’m on a mission to make whoopie pies!
Thanks for the innovation Bakerella, that book looks fantastic, can’t wait to see your cake pop book!
I grew up with my dad reminiscing about whoopie pies but have surprisingly never eaten them. I would love to check out that cookbook as I’ve heard many good things about it. Yours look delish!
i’ve made your red velvet whoopie pies and loved them! can’t wait to try this choc/pb recipe!
These look amazing! My grandmother used to make whoopie pies when I was VERY young, I havent had one in almost 20 years! Definitely going to give it a shot!
I’ve heard that these are fantastic, but I’ve never tried one. I think the closest thing I’ve ever had would be the Little Debbie oatmeal cremes. Thanks for the opportunity to win!
Looooooove whoopie pies , my fave is pumpkin with cream cheese frosting!
My mother makes classic, heavenly whoopie pies, so I’m a big fan!
I agree with a former post, I think they look somewhat like Oreo Cakesters. I’m sure Whoopie pies came first, though! I’ve heard of them, but never actually “seen” them until now!
I don’t think I have ever eaten these and I have never made them, though I think it will be just the treat to make with my kids this week. Thanks!
Of course you embellished and made them look extra scrumciously great. I truly wish I could take a bite,a big bite at that! Thank you for sharing yet another totally yummy treat!
these look so yummy! never heard of them. they would not last long at my house =)
Ohhh, I was browsing through the baking section of a cookbook library the other day (I have a tea party coming up and was looking for inspiration) and I saw something quite similiar on one of the pages! They immediately caught my attention because I always like layered colours in pastries. Of course I can’t remember what they called them in the book, it was a Dutch name though… hm.
Yummy… I think I need that book! No I have not ever made them but I’ve made it my goal to try to make everything (except for petit fours b/c those look impossible) that you post on your blog, so I need that book! :)
Never made or tried them. Would love to bake them! Pick me!
I’ve never heard of these but I may have seen them before, they seem kind of familiar. I think I’m going to make this for hubby’s upcoming birthday, he’ll love them!
I’ve heard of them, and a friend makes something similar – I would love to learn myself!
One of my dearest friends and I were out at a Farmer’s Market in Vincennes IN this past weekend and saw some homemade Whoopie pies. She revealed how she used to love them when she was a kid and how she hadn’t seen any in years. Her 56th birthday’s coming up in August and I’d like to make her some. My daughter sent me the link to your website — it is awesome. I can’t wait to try the Red Velvet Cake Balls! Thank you Thank you Thank you.
I’ve only made them using your cheater recipe with the cake mix! and we LOVE LOVE LOVE them! by far red velvet is my favorite! YUM!
I have heard of them, but I have never tried to make them. Sounds like a fun recipe. It would be fun to make them bite-sized for a party.
I just made red velvet whoopie pies (or as we call them, gobs) with a cream cheese filling. Yummm!
I ate one just last week. But it came wrapped in cellophane in a box. I’m SURE it was nowhere near as tasty as the beauties that you made!
tried one from trader joe’s that was pretty delicious. I’ve never made them, but would love to try!
I’ve heard of them but never made them. Maybe I need a cookbook to help me out! They look amazing…
Yummy! I would love to try them!
I’ve had whoopie pies in Maine and tried to make them myself once before. The batter was too thin though, so I had to use it in muffin tin tops. I’m eager to try this one out since plopping it on baking sheets would be so much easier.
OMG I would love to win thanks for the recipe going to try
I have eaten plenty of them, just never made them. Thought you needed a whoopie pie pan. Glad to see you don’t need it to make them. I would love to try!
Can’t wait to try making these! My sisters and I used to eat choco pies when we were younger. They are kind of like whoopie pies except they have a marshmellow filling and are coated with chocolate. Yum!
I have eaten whoopie pies but never made them. I think they are delicious!
Chocolate and Peanut Butter??? In any form is great!
I’ve made whoopie pies once, and it was actually Amy’s Jalapeno Cornbread whoopie pies from this book! I got the recipe from our local newspaper and fell in love! I would LOVE to own this book!!!
In Maine, whoopie pies are a part of everyday life – there are 4 or 5 places within waking distance of my office where one can easily get any number of varieties. Very, very bad for the waistline, but so, so yum!
I’ve heard of them but never actually had them- they look like so much fun! I’ve been wanting to try making some!
Um.. YUM. These look so good and so bad for you at the same time! I have made them once before, and oh. my. gosh. they were GOOD! This book belongs in my cookbooks!
I’ve heard of whoopie pies before, but am sad to say I’ve never made or had them before. However, I trully think these are the desserts of my dreams – as I always prefers cake to cookies, and more importantly, the portion of cake closest to the frosting or filling. Since I need to prove this hypothesis, I am going to make this recipe asap. Thank you for always providing such delicious recipes/posts!! You’re an inspiration!
I had never seen whoopies before but now I want to make them! Yummm!
Never heard of them but I’m willing to try new recipes.
I’ve never made them before, but now I want to try!
this is all foreign to me but looks like OH so much fun!
I absolutely LOVE whoopie pies!!!! I first heard of them on the Food Network Channel when Emeril made them….I don’t know why I had never thought of using different flavored fillings…Fingers crossed that I win….=)
Love them, but never tried making them myself. A few bakeries near my house started selling them recently. Yours look awesome!
My husband grew up in Oregon and these are his favorite childhood treats. His mom used to make really big ones, almost like a Hostess Susie Q. I learned to make them and my favorite flavors are the classic chocolate with peppermint filling–a Christmas favorite!
They look delicious and not too difficult to make. I guess I need to put these on my “to bake” list. :D
Never made Whoopies-but would love to learn how!
I’ve never heard of them but they may be a relative of Moon Pies?
I have never heard of whoopie pies, but I’m already dreaming up variations on it. First of all I bet these would be fantastic with ice cream in the middle, maybe mint chocolate chip ice cream rolled in mini chocolate chips.
Also, bonus baking tip! My friend and I had a baking extravaganza yesterday and decided to make Strawberry Banana Bread with chocolate chips in it. I’ll have the full recipe on my blog shortly, but until then, just use a normal banana bread recipe and throw in some strawberry chunks (juice included!) and mini chocolate chips. I haven’t tasted anything that good in a long time.
Why does no one ever put kiwi in baked goods? Strawberry kiwi cookies are next on our list to make.
The only whoopie pie I’ve ever had was at a coffee joint in Seattle. They had the classic dark chocolate style and now I can’t get enough!
the best whoopie pie is at lulus bakery in scarsdale, ny
I’ve heard of them, but never made or eaten one before. What a great idea.
I’ve never made whoopie pies, but they’re a big thing in Boston. The company I used to work for gave us all a Wicked Whoopie Pie one time, and man, was that delicious! Mike’s Pastry on Hanover St. in the North End also makes head-turning whoopie pies!
i heard of them via a NYTimes article a couple of years back and make them often, especially for potlucks where they’ve been a big hit! rather than making them with buttercream fillings, i’ve taken to making them with whipped cream centers. that makes them light and really yummy! :)
Yes! I know what they are and they are SO yummy. The closest thing you can find to them in the central valley of CA is an Oreo Cakester (I know…you really shouldn’t even compare the two).
I’ll definitely add this book to the library. What a fun party treat or favor these would be!
Love them! They’re called gobs in our neck of the woods though.
Made them. Love them. Could use new recipes :)
I have heard of them and bought carrot cake with cream cheese filling whoopie’s at my local store.
This is what I have been wanting to make!!
Thank you for the recipe. Can’t wait to try making them.
Can’t wait to try this recipe!! :) made strawberry ones once.
I have heard of them and found a pumpkin whoppie pie recipe but haven’t made them yet. I LOVE peanut butter…I’ll HAVE to try making these. Thank you for sharing :-)
Never made them….look like summer FUN!!!
I don’t know why I haven’t tried to make whoopie pies since they marry two of my favorite sweets! Plus, it would be fun just to tell people you’ve made whoopie – pies. :)
Loooove them! I have made Pumpkin whoopies…and they were amazing!
I have never made them but I would love to learn! They looks so yummy :)
mmmm those look fantastic! i’ve never had one, but i’ll be baking them tonight :)

I’ve made them – saw them on Oprah and had to try them! Shared them with my office and they were a big hit!!
I have made whoopie pies (traditional flavor chocolate with vanilla cream) and everyone LOVES them – I was just looking at this book on Amazon this weekend and put it on my wish list!
I love red velvet whoopies with cream cheese frosting!
i made a pumpkin version of whoopie pies at thanksgiving. they had cream cheese filling and were sooo good!!! cant wait to try the chocolate ones!!
Never made them, but they look yumilicous, kind of like an oatmeal cream pie, which my son loves…..Will definitely try these.
I live in PA and whoopie pies are alive and well here,I have made chocolate ones with marshmallow creme filling tinted orange for Halloween and I always wanted to try making pumpkin ones but I haven’t yet. I have sampled banana ones before and they were great.
My mother in law introduced me to whoopie pies and since then I’ve seen them on several food blogs. I would love to try making some!
My husband was just sayin “please make some whoopie Pies”
I’ve heard about whoopies, but have never made them. I’d like to try them though! Whoopie for this book!
I’ve heard of them and I think I’ve even eaten them before but I’ve never made them before. Your’s look so pretty it’s making my mouth water!
If they are half as good as you make them look in your pics. they must be heaven
Whoopie for whoopie pies! Whoopie pies are fun to make, fun to eat, and fun to say! Whooooopieeeeeeeeeee!!!
I haven’t made them yet, but I just got a recipe for one in a cookie cookbook I bought, so it’s on the list.
I’ve heard of them but never made them. I’d like to try them… is there a recipe for chocolate mint ones? Yummm…
Oh my gosh! I have to get this book! My husband’s favorite cookies are whoopie pies. I make them for him once in awhile and last week I got him one from the Dane County Farmer’s Market in Madison, WI. There is a booth there devoted to only whoopie pies! Needless to say, that booth is always packed!
I have heard of them, but don’t know if I’ve ever had one. They remind me of moon pies. They look yummy!
I have a habit of picking up 2 things when I travel: small cookbooks from locals and fabric. One of my favorite cookbooks is from my visit to Amish country in Pennsylvania (just outside of Hershey). We traveled the backroads and came across a little roadside stand. No one was tending it. There was a lot of wonderful hand made items and a little sign that said “We are sorry we can’t be here. We’re working in the fields. Please enjoy and leave payment in the box.” What a refreshing treat – on many levels. We purchased shoofly and whoopie pies. More treats!! Of course, my cookbook from that trip includes both recipes. A whole cookbook of whoopie pies – even better!
I’ve heard of them, but never made them before. How fun that would be!
I have never made whoopie pies although I have several in my recipe binder that I’d like to try. I love the idea of rolling the edges in candies. Butterscotch chips would be my choice.
I’ve never had them, but they look amazing!
I’ve never had them before but I would love to make them.
I’ve never made them but I’m willing to!!!!
I’d never heard of them until I ran across a recipe for them on the epicurious.com site a couple of years ago. They were definitely not part of my Southern CA childhood. I sort of assumed that the name was probably a regional thing.
I have never made them, but I would love to! Especially the chocolate peanut butter ones you made. Anything with that combination has to be good.
Yumm! I’ve never made a whoopie pie, but I’m thinking I should soon!
I’ve never made them myself, but I love them!
Similiar to the “moon pies” that I grew up with (40 yrs ago!) – just add a chocolate coating!. Would love to win – thanks for the opportunity!
I know whoopie pies. The Mennonite community that I grew up in made them regularly, for bake sales too. There is a Restaurant in Ohio called the Der Dutchman that has a huge picture of one on their delivery van. Yay for whoopie pies!
Those look yummy. I cant wait to try em. I havent had a whoppie pie since i was a child.
Heard of them but never made them — although I might make these this afternoon they look so good!
I don’t think I’ve ever tasted a whoopie but I’ve been seeing them around a lot lately, another reason to bake is fine by me!!
I had seen and eat whoopie pies before I actually knew their name, but my first meeting with my mother in law entailed my husband’s request of her making whoopie pies for our visit. We took a ton home with us from PA to NC and enjoyed eating them for awhile after!
I’ve heard of whoopie pies but I didn’t know what they were until I saw this. Those look so yummy! I think I will be trying this recipe this week. Thank you!
i have not made whoopie pies, but just the name makes me want to!
While I have never made them, there is a ref in our roller derby league who made them once before a game. She always makes us treats and sweets for our games and league meetings – Aggie Battery is her name and she’s the best!!
<3 The Tell-Tale Tart
aka Lynn Talley
heard of them, never really ate them. Yours looks so good.
Just started a diet today…this is so not helping!
