Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  23. I haven’t commented here before but I like your work a lot! I love cake pops, such a cute idea!
But now I thought I should let you know that you are definately not letting your donor down. His/her kidney lived for 18 years with you, made a ton of cake pops and stuff and had fun doing it – the donor would be proud! Now I guess it’s time to let go, nothing last forever… I am a donor (if something happens to me they can use whatever is useful) and I can tell you I’d be happy if somebody would make it so good with one of my organs – even if for just a few years. And you made it for 18 years -that’s a great result! I can’t imagine how painful the dyalisis is but it will end soon – I hope that you’re already through with it. I wish you could use your kidney for quite some time. If not I wish you a nice quick operation with minimum recovery time:).

  24. You are in my prayers. I only recently finished chemo and radiation for tonsil cancer and also got huge support and inspiration from the bloggers and comments. I will be praying for you. God Bless you and keep you well.

With all that positive thinking, you’re sure to be all better in no time! :) I wish you and your mother all the best.

  58. I’ve taken out my autographed copy of your book (my daughter’s Christmas present), and placed it front and center on my desk to remind me to send good wishes to you every day. Prayers and thoughts to you right now as you face this new challenge, and hoping for a miracle that your Mom will be a potential donor. xo

  59. Your site brings me sheer bliss and happiness even on the gloomiest of days. The internet has a way of pulling people together from all over to share their stories, their happiness, and sometimes their pitfalls. I can’t believe how positive you’re being and I believe that positive energy will help you through this all. I wish you the best! We’re all cheering you on from the sidelines! Get well soon!

I’ve even decided that I am going to become a pastry chef, when I get out of the Army, and hopefully open up my own bake shop! Your optimism is unconquerable, your spirit so bright and cheery. So… I didnt know you were sick, but the past week or so I’ve been thinking of you alot and appreciating you ~ so hopefully some good vibes went your way! Wonderful to see/read so many supportive comments reaching you!

  125. My prayers are with you. I received a kidney from my best friend August 2009. I know the feeling of enjoying the freedom, but knowing it is not forever and letting down my best friend after she made such a sacrifice for me. This week alone I met a transplant recipient and a living donor in the same week. We are family and we all know the importance of a second, third chance at life.

For all the readers….PLEASE let your families know your wishes to be a donor and sign your drivers license.

    Sending you hugs and prayers!

  126. God bless you and your mom. Prayers coming your way!!

  127. My Dad has Dialysis 3 days a week, and also sits there long hours. Well, that just means you’ll have to get yourself an iPad to blog, and post photos while you’re sitting and getting the Dialysis done! A entertaining productive way to pass time. ;oP. You can play games, read, puzzles whatever. Godspeed recovery. Keep the fun ideas coming. :o)

  128. You are in my prayers! I pray a match is found for you soon, Bakerella! xoxo

  146. Hi Bakerella,

This is still the 2nd time I posted a comment here, and I’m so sorry for what you have gone through. I know its tough, from what I’ve heard from people who went the same ordeal as you. Looking at your pictures posted here, no one can ever tell you have kidney transplant. You look so vivacious and happy. Ever smiling always..
With your amazing spirit I’m very positive you can get through this rough times. Good luck and always keep in mind that people from all over will be praying for your good health.
Thank you for sharing with us what you have gone through. I know its not easy, but you trusted us your readers, and its a great honor for you considered us your true friends.

  147. You are in my thoughts and prayers! I wish you a speedy recovery. I’ve never commented before but I’ve been reading your blog for about two years and I love it! You inspire me to bake and try new things. All the best to you, always. :)

  148. I’m one of the many long time readers but it’s my first time commenting also. My mom is a dialysis nurse and my aunt was on dialysis for 23 looong years (off and on) she actually was blessed with 3 transplants throughout her term, but we did lose her in 2001…so as you can see, this matter is very close to my heart. I’ll be praying for you and your mom everyday! You’re such an inspiration! BIIIIIGGGG HUGS!!!

  149. Sending you lots of healing mojo. Hoping that your mom is a suitable donor or you find another donor quickly.

  150. Praying that doctors will have wisdom, and doors open up for your kidney transplant. You have been such an inspiration to so many. Hoping that you will be embraced by encouraging words in the months ahead!

  151. I love your website and it truly am in awe of cake pops you produce and inspired by your website. I truly hope and pray that your mom is a match. If not, I pray that you find a match very quickly. All of my best.

  152. You are really an amazing person and your donor would be so proud! and their family. Good luck to you! I have been not checking blogs and I am always happen when you post but then to read what you are going through. You are going to find a kidney and you really should direct people to donate because sometimes people just want to help and do not know the direction. bless you!

  153. Sending you thoughts and prayers!!!!

  154. B,
I wanted to send you my sincere prayers that you are able to come out of this with the strength physically and emotionally that you will need.
My father recently began dialysis and it has been a difficult concept for me to grasp. My dad is my best friend. He has been there for me through all of my mistakes and all of my triumphs. He’s my super hero and to see him unhealthy and unlike his normal self is a hard thing to watch. Everything I do is to make him proud. Bottom line, dialysis is a painful thing to watch someone deal with and must be torture to go through.
I started reading your blog two years ago after my friend put me on to you. To see your career blossom into what you have created is amazing. I wish you only the best and hope you will find a donor. I am a firm believer in there being a reason for trial. There is a Greek saying that goes, “Through struggle we grow into wisdom.” Difficult things is how we become our best selves.
    Love from Salt Lake City
    -Jocelyn W.

  155. Best wishes to you and your family during this time. Hopefully you will be feeling better very soon.

  156. wishing you a speedy recovery and sending big hugs your way! you are an inspiration to all of us!

  157. I just can tell you. You will have that transplant because God is good. You need to said with your mouth that you are healty and everything will be Ok. The faith is your best friend. Trust in Good and believe that he will do the miracle for you. Think possitive and believe in God her make the different belive me by experience and testimony GOD IS GOOOOOOOOD! And what it cant be possible for the human its possible for him. Pray, pray and PRAY he will do the miracle and you will be a life testimony for the glory of GOD.
    God bless you heart!

  158. Hi Bakerella,
My name is Alya, and am from United Arab Emirates.
I have been so inspired by your website since i came across it and i have been trying out many recipes from your posts. you are just amazing, inspiring, and full of imagination.
I never thought of writing to you until today after reading about your health.
Since you have given me a lot of inspiration, i decided that i should give back with the least that i can.
I hope you get well soon and stay positive :) wish you all the best and waiting to hear from you soon.

  159. Dear Bakerella,
I hope you have awesome nurses during your stay. You are adorable and spunky and you’ll totally make it through this.
My sister Ruth currently has a drain from her right kidney (and will have it for another week) while we wait and see if the stone blocking her ureter will function…then they’ll know if they can salvage the one kidney or if they need to take it out. :( what’s with kidneys these days???
    with love,
    Anna

    Mucho Animo.

  161. My prayers are with you. You must take it one day at a time, and enjoy the love from all around you.

  162. So glad to see your twitter that you are HOME after 18 days. May you have the Luck o’ the Irish today and all your tomorrows!

  163. Miss Bakerella – don’t ever fear that you let your donor down, I am sure your donor is thrilled that you have lived 18 productive and joyous years. They would never be disappointed…they would be overjoyed, especially with what you have done in the past couple years of living your dreams. That is what being a donor is all about…giving another person a chance at life and you have taken that gift and flourished with it. I can’t think of a better gift to give. Stay strong and my prayers are sent from Canada.

  164. Thoughts and prayers are with you. We will miss you, but get yourself well!

  165. That’s not an easy situation, girl… my boyfriend is a transplant recipient so I know what you’re going through, at least medical-wise. I really hope that your mom is an eligible donor (and I bet she does too), and if not, I hope that you don’t have to wait too long — dialysis can be so exhausting and disruptive (if not necessary). All the best, and I wish you nothing but good health. :) Take good care of yourself!

  166. take care of yourself! all my best for speedy kidney news!

  167. I know you´ll get well soon , you are a shinning star and have lots of ?. God will do his part ! :) big hug for you and your mom, she´s an example of what love is !!!

  169. Love you, Bakerella! Hang in there. In the meantime, we have your cake pops BOOK and great website to keep us occupied! :-)
