Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

In the event that no match is available, is there a way for any of us to be tested? I know that must seem like a weird and perhaps random suggestion, given that we’ve never met. However, you have so unselfishly shared so much with us, and if possible, and needed, we would be happy to do the same for you. (You should have the email address, so feel free to use that to reply.)

Wishing you all the best, Diana

  60. big cyber hugs.

How scary for you and your family.

  67. I will be praying for healing and a matching donor!!

  68. I have never commented on a blog before, but love reading them. I just like to be a silent observer. But reading what you wrote brought tears to my eyes. My mother-in-law passed away 9 years ago and our family chose to donate her organs. It was the most moving experience I have ever had. Even though it has been 9 years, I still get very emotional when hearing about someone that has been a recipient. I am praying for you and sending you much love. It is such an amazing gift on both ends!

  69. Thinking of you. Praying you have patience to get through the next bit of time. I broke my back skydiving yrs ago. I was soooo bored of the healing process and thereapy I came up with a saying, “Patience, patience, day by day, for this too shall pass away”. I would lay for hours saying it over and over, because I knew it would just take patience to get through it. God bless you, and your family. The world awaits its “Pop Queen”.

  70. I had no idea about your medical issues. I hope you are able to get a new kidney and that the transplant goes well. You are a trooper!

  107. oh gosh! Feel better!!

  108. wow, you have thousands of comments, but wanted to extend my well wishes too. I hope your mom is a match, and if she’s not…one will come your way very soon. My dad had a bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor, and he had an unusual DNA makeup so we were very scared a match wouldn’t be found. However, there was a wonderful person out there that was his angel, and you will have one too! Any kind of transplant is tough to go through, so sending prayers and well wishes your way!

  109. My mom has a kidney disease, so I understand quite well what you’re going through. I hope everything works out and a donor is found quickly. Get well and my prayers are with you!

  110. I read this a few days ago and this is such difficult news to handle. Please keep your spirit up and know how many are praying for you and your family.

  112. I wish you the best things!!!
    get well soon!!

  113. Keep that positive thinking going! And know that there are thousands of people who follow your blog sending positive thoughts, vibes, and prayers for you! Including me, sending all three your way! And if you feel you can, keep us posted every once in a while. We care!

  114. thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this time. but so very important for you to focus on YOU and try not to worry about “cake pops and cupcakes and cute”….we just want you to rest and recover and heal as best as you possibly can!

  115. Thinking of you and wishing for a speedy recovery!

  116. Dear Bakerella,
I am very sorry to hear of your health issues. No idea that you were a transplant recipient. I have a good friend on the transplant list and my daughter’s best friend’s two month old little boy who had his kidneys removed on his sixth day of life will eventually need a transplant.
It is my hope that all goes well for you. When we have good health, we have everything!
Adding you to my prayer list. My wish for you is a new, healthy kidney and restoration of your health.
    All the best to you,
    Charlene

  124. Stay strong! I will pray and hope for the very best for you! Thanks for sharing with us this side of you. Be positive!

  125. This brought tears to my eyes! I am saying a prayer for you. It sounds like you have a really good plan in place (and how amazing is it that dialysis can do what it does?!) but more prayers and healing thoughts are a whole separate kind of medicine, so… Hope you feel all the love that’s being sent your way!

  126. I’ve been checking in and missing you. I thought it was just travel and book tours keeping you busy. Now that I know it was sickness, I had to write you a little get well soon message!

I hope the dialysis gives your kidney a little bit of extra time and I hope you quickly find a kidney that can be yours.

Good luck and sweet dreams (cause a hospital is a tricky place for needed sleep!)

  127. Take care, sending hugs and cupcake dreams your way.

  128. I live in Hong Kong, I always visit your website. Don’t give up. Many people love you , Get better soon.

  129. I am so sorry to hear that. you will be in my prayers. :)

  130. I am so sorry this is happening. My sister is currently on chemo to buy her a little more time before she has to begin dialysis. If it works, she will (hopefully)have 5 years or more without dialysis. In the future, she will need a kidney. My kidney. I pray for her healing every day. I will be praying for yours as well.

On a funny note (we have to have these not to get too worried/stressed): three years ago I had a breast reduction. My sister was not “blessed” with a chest like mine. I told her back then that she should lay beside me and they could take out of mine and put into her. Her response was “I don’t want your used goods.” We laugh now! She will one day, in fact, need my used goods. Sister love!

  131. So sorry to hear this Bakerella! Please focus on getting well and do not feel bad about not posting, we will all still be here when you’re back. I truly believe that things will work out for you, so best wishes for a speedy recovery!

  132. I am praying for you, the doctors who are treating you and your Mom! Hugs and love!

  133. You are in my prayers. I hope you find a match quickly and will soon be on your way to a speedy recovery. Wishing you and your family all the best.

  134. Our prays are with you. You are a incredible spirit and I know you will be up and running soon. Thank you for inspiring myself and husband.

  156. The exact same thing has happened to my brother this year, after just as many years. Dialysis has improved so much during that time. It certainly doesn’t wipe him out like it used to and so he is able to lead a much more normal life. All the very best to you and your family.

  157. I hope you get well!

  158. I wish you all the best and hope than you’ll get a confirmation about the fact you can receive your mom’s kidney.
Waiting is hard, i send you my patience.
    I love your blog.

  159. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I recently have had a retinal detachment and will be having my second surgery within a week. Not knowing the outcome is scary but stay positive and meditate. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Take care and stay strong.

  160. You are in my thoughts and prayers. I am very blessed to have a job facilitating the donor/recipient process. Registering to become an organ, tissue, and eye donor is a simple, easy, and selfless thing to do. April is Donate Life month. Register today and let your family know your wishes! Take comfort in knowing that, since it is such a selfless thing to do, you would never be letting your donor down. Your donated kidney allowed you to have a productive life for 18 years!!!! That’s something that any selfless person would be happy about!

  161. God bless you and I pray that you will get the new kidney that you need.

  162. Please take your time! I am so sorry to hear about how sick you are. I hope everything goes well and you recovery quickly. We all adore you and will be here when you can come back! and think about all the cake pops you can think of while you are undergoing hospital stays and procedures!

  163. Just adding my little message of encouragement to all these others so you can see how much you inspire and give enjoyment to so many people! Hugs and prayers being sent to you!

  164. Love to you and your kidney. Sending happy thoughts to you both.

  165. Hello… I just stumbled upon your blog for the first time today and read this post. My heart was broken for you and I immediately said a prayer for you. I was touched by how you fondly remembered your deceased donor, but believe me, you have not let him/her down. I know they would be so happy that they were able to give you these happy years. 188. Hi Angie!
I ‘m saddened by your news and wish you a positive match! I was thinking of you last week when my sister and I did 100 Sesame Street cake pops for my twins’ first birthday party. Now all my family and friends know about you…gave u all the kudos for creating the idea.

This week 2 of my coworkers are celebrating the one year anniversary of the kidney transplant they had. Andrew gave his kidney to Claire, a mom of college twins. She was on daily dialysis for years. Andrew had to change his life (quit smoking, exercise, lower his blood pressure) and it took 3 years to have him finally meet the qualifications, but they did it. I tell you this to bring you hope – that this time next year you too will be celebrating what we call a “Bean-iversary”. I have to make kidney shaped cake for them, but I may have to make kidney shaped cake pops to honor you. You are my inspiration and you bring so many of us joy. I will pray for your recovery. God Bless You, Bakerella, as you have blessed so many of us.

  189. Sending good vibes your way from Vegas. Hope you get better and your mom is a good donor. ::hugs::

YOU are a bright spot in so many peoples day.

  194. OK, so it sounds pathetic to be crying for the writer of a blog whom you have never met, never even posted a comment to, but Bakerella, today I am. When my eldest son was in the hospital for kidney problems (He has Cystic Kidney Disease) I found your blog. I went home and made my sweet little man a sort of warped looking version of a cake pop that night. He was delighted because it sorta resembled Elmo in a very lopsided, misshapen kind of way. Your treats helped us find a little bit of fun and joy in a time of pain. I hope you can find the same. Adding you to our prayers :)

  195. I am praying for you. Thank you for your wonderful blog. I always love reading it and trying out your cute ideas. Hope you get well soon.

  196. Take care of yourself!! We’re all sending positive thoughts your way!

  197. Sending prayers for you and your mom! Hope you get well soon and you and your new kidney will be stronger than ever!! My 10 year old daughter and I love to read your site together, thanks for sharing it!

  198. praying for your fast recovery, Bakerella.

  199. I have really enjoyed following your blog, trying out my hand at cake pops, and sharing all of it with friends – I will be praying for you as you wait to see if your Mother is a match and that both of you come through the surgery safely and well.
