Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  8. Oh Bakerella, I have never commented but have been a long time fan of your blog. You make me laugh all the time. As you can see by the number of comments, you are dearly loved. I will keep you, your mother and your family in my prayers. Life throws curve balls unfortunately. We’ve all been dealt a few. Just know that heaven is getting an overload on your behalf and that the Lord will bless you with what is needed.

  9. As a faithful follower of your blog I am distressed to hear your news. I will pray for you every day that everything will work out. Your positive approach to life will get you through this. You have so many people rooting for you. God bless you!

  15. I was sort of wondering what was up since you hadn’t posted for awhile, and now I know. Wishing you a speedy recovery and sending all sorts of good thoughts your way! Crossing my fingers (and toes) that your mom’s a match.

  16. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. You are such an inspiration to all of us. Please remember that as prayers go upward blessings come down.

  17. Where can I be tested? I am no relation but if God were to make me a match, I don’t mind sharing! REALLY! Wow, wouldn’t it be awesome if I could share my life with you – since you have so freely shared your life with me!

    I am NOT joking!

“To get something you never had, you have to do something you never did.” When God takes something from your grasp , he’s not punishing you, but merely frees your hands to receive something better. Concentrate on this sentence: “The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you”. Something good will happen to you today, something that you have been waiting to hear.

Just 27 Words, “God walk through my house and take away all my worries and illnesses and please watch over and heal my family. Amen.”

Let me know. Miracle happen EVERY day!

  28. Once day I came across this site filled with colorful works for cute art. You have inspired me to bake, want to grow up to be a mother and make these cute treats for my future child and friends. You are in my thoughts, and I wish for the best. Know that you have a lot of people supporting you, all these comments are from people all over the world, and each one of us are standing beside you. “Hwaiting!”;; A common Korean ‘battle cry’, words of encouragement. <3

  29. Get better soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. HUGS!

  30. Praying for you! I can only imagine how difficut this has been. I hope you will be better soon! Sending all things positive your way!!!

  31. Wow. You are one tough *cake pop (not cookie hehe). I have never posted before, but how could I not respond to this post. I’m a medical student, and never expected my happy-go-lucky, go-to baking blog to have a post on this topic. I hope that you have a short, but productive stay in the hospital. You’ll get through this just fine. If it helps at all, I’m blood type B negative and would be honored to share!

  32. I too have been a silent reader on your blog and am totally in awe of your creations, I was just getting bored of baking and you have given me a little “pop” back in my step! So great big hugs and get well soon xxx:)

  35. I’m thinking about you & adding you to my prayers. I hope you get better soon and are able to get a kidney fast. I’m still disappointed I couldn’t drive up to see you when you were in San Francisco last month.

I plan to make cake pops for the teachers at school next week. I’m sure they’ll be a hit.

  36. You are more than a conqueror, you’ve lived all these years on your donor kidney and I pray a similar blessing using the works as I type this either your mother’s a match and you have a uneventful surgery and you both have a speedy recovery. Or your time on the donor list is short.

Your heart and spirit are so kind and sweet, I pray you remain encouraged, positive, and strong throughout this process.

  37. My thoughts and prayers are with you as you go through this. You are a strong and wonderful woman who always seems to put yourself last on your list. You need to put yourself first and stop worrying about us. We will all still be here when (notice I didn’t say if) you get back and will be waiting with baited breath for you to tell us how well you and your mom did through the surgery. *hugs*

  156. I’m trying to decide if making kidney shaped cakepops would be a charming display of camaraderie or just plain icky. Kinda going with icky. Maybe something with jelly beans, they’re sorta the right shape. . . .or maybe I’ll just eat cake and smile at the sweetness and think of you.

  157. Keeping you in my prayers!!!!

  198. Dear Bakerella,
I’m so happy to read you’re feeling better, and hope everything will go well until they find you a great donor. You always seem so bright and sunny on pictures, I hope (and somehow know) that you still have that great smile, and I’m sure all the nurses and doctors in the hospital love spending time with you.
Wishing you all the best from Belgium, hope you’ll be up and baking soon! But take your time to recover first, there’ll always be time to bake;-)

Big hug, lots of love and sweetness!
