Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  10. You are not letting your donor down! From reading your site we all know that you live life fully and you spread so much joy through your baking and sharing. As you already stated 18 years is a great run for a donate kidney, especially if the donor was deceased of natural causes and most likely older. Your kidney is probably older than you are, and think of all the fun you’ve given it in the past 18 years.

    Sending you well wishes.

  91. Hi, I’ve never commented before, but have been reading you for a year now and love all wonderful things you do ( although bad for the diet ;o) but I have to confess that my favorite thing to do is watch the pictures af all your fans in the book signing because I like to read the funny things you write and for the always smiling face of yours.
So keep smiling, life not always goes the way we wanted but its still beautiful. My prayers are with you and your family.
    And thanks for sharing.

  92. I just bought your Cake Pops book today at Target, and came home to check out your website for the first time. My kidney/pancreas transplant was a year and a half ago from a deceased donor, and I’ve got my fingers crossed for a time frame like yours, but I can well understand how hard it would be to have to go back to D and perhaps start over on that long list. I hope if you have a wait in store, it’s a short one!
Thanks for the sweet inspiration – I can’t wait to try making some cake pops.

  93. Oh, wishing you successful recovery in whatever form it will be in! Keep that positive spirit we all love so much,

  94. Bakerella, if I could be a suitable donor, I’d gladly donate a kidney. If you put out a call for donors to be tested, I’ll be one of the first in line. You inspire all of us every day and we know you’ll be back in the pink very soon. You’ve even started a massive trend at STARBUCKS!! Next up: kidney-shaped cake pops! Love to you

  119. Thinking & sending up prayers for you.

  120. Dear Bakerella,

My heart dropped when I read this posting. You have been such an inspiration to me and have showed people that anyone can do what they love…I am a self taught cake maker/decorator and I started after MY kidney transplant in 2004. I was one of the lucky ones that got a living donor…from my dad. He was a perfect match. In 1998 I was diagnosed with Good Pastures Syndrome and spent 7 weeks in hospital, almost died, 13 blood transfusions, kidney’s failed on my 19th birthday, on dialysis for a short while, ended up with chronic renal failure…and received a transplant 6 years later.

I have had minimal issues with my kidney and am pretty healthy. Reading your post made me stop and think about what my reality could be. I would be devastated on SO many levels if my kidney failed one day…which is always a possibility…I have always been positive and I count my blessings every day.

One September 1, 2010 my father passed away from bladder cancer. It has been the hardest thing I have gone through in life. My father was my best friend, we had such an amazing relationship….the kidney was a bonus…I miss him every day more and more…my transplant experience has changed after he passed… this kidney is a part of him that is living on…which is what cadaver donations focus on…the gift of life, and a small piece of someone else living on…helping someone else live a longer healthier life.

I miss him so much, but I also am so proud to carry his kidney now more than ever. I feel his strength and it makes me look forward to life, and helps me to focus on all the good he has done in his life, instead of dwelling on him passing from cancer.

I wish you NOTHING but good health and positive thoughts and prayers. If you ever need to talk, I know what you’re going through…please don’t hesitate.

    xoxo

Dec. 1, 1999 I donated a kidney to a very special friend who was 20 years older than me and she was only with us for another 5 yrs. but there is not and never ever has been even a half a second that I regret giving my friend that gift. To know that she had those precisious moments with her family and friends was just the best gift God could have given us all. To anyone else reading this message, please prayerfully consider getting information on becoming a donor. XO
