Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.
Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.
But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.
But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.
No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.
The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.
So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.
Hugs,
Bakerella
Prayers&hugs!!
this is my very first visit to your blog… I bought your book on a whim when Amazon recommended it to a friend and she to me…. We are English and living in England and had never heard of cakepops, but after making my very first cake bites yesterday…. and planning a weekend of pop making I feel we may be converts!
I do hope that you get your new kidney sooner rather than later. Dialysis is no fun. I hope that you start to feel better soon and are able to escape from the hospital.
xx
Wishing you all the best. You are in my prayers.
God bless you and I KNOW it’s all going to unfold in perfect grace.
You are an inspiration to so many and now its time for us all to inspire you to take a good rest. I wish you a very speedy recovery dear Bakerella from over the pond in London xxx

Now that I read from your health problems I want to tell yo how sorry I am. I wish you all the luck for the recovery and for getting a new kidney as soon as possible. My best thoughts are with you!

Bakerella,
You’re such a sweetie for updating the site. I’ve been checking your site nearly daily, hoping you’d post an amazing recap of all the new book signings.
Now with all that aside, how can you say you’ feel like you’ve “let down” your donor? Look at you! You’ve gone on Martha Stewart, published a book, and went on a nation-wide tour! You’re loved by many, Bakerella. You’re sunny posts are the highlight of many people’s day [such as your adorable proposal]. You will get through this and I’m sure your donor is tickled pink to see such an accomplished lovely person bring so much happiness and achieved plenty!
Hang in there. I’m sending you lots of sun-shiny thoughts. Healthy mind and choices — We’re all rooting for you!
Thank you for sharing with us. I have been wondering where you were! We’ll be praying for you.I can sense your bubbly spirit through your blogs and writings and I wish you a very speedy recovery. Praying that your Mom is a match. Blessings!
I figured you hadn’t posted due to book signings and I wish it were the case. I’ll be thinking of you when I make cupcakes for our bake sale on St. Patty’s day. Stay strong and get better!
Please try to get more rest and not to worry too much. I’ll keep you and your family in my prayers. Wish you all the best and get better real soon.
Sure have been missing you! My cousin underwent a kidney transplant when she was only 18 and that kidney lasted 20 years. A few years ago she got really sick and had to go on dialysis and the journey for another kidney was on again – she received her second kidney transplant last year from an amazingly kind, selfless donor and is going strong today! Here’s to you finding your amazing donor! I have no doubt that you will be baking again soon :)
((hugs)) and warm healing thoughts sent your sweet way…
prayers for you and your family. It feels like I know you after following you for so long. Praying for your full recovery. I loooooove your book!
Dear Bakerella,
Just wanted you to know that I had noticed your absence and missed you terribly. I hope the absolute best for you and your kidney. My thoughts are with you and I hope to celebrate we will soon have kidney shaped cake pops! Much love!
oh no! I had hoped you were off enjoying loot from Starbucks, because they clearly stole their new cake pop idea from you. Sending you best wishes for a match, and a speedy recovery.
Gute Besserung aus Deutschland. Meine Gedanken begleiten dich :-) Kopf hoch, ihr schaffst das.
Will be praying for healing and comfort. God Bless you! My Mom has worked in dialysis for years and I know how tough it is for those that have to go through it. I am so very, very sorry but love your spirit and your upbeat attitude. Praying for you and your Mom…for all that love you. You are a an inspiration to many and I want to thank you for sharing yourself, all of yourself, with the rest of us. God speed..and praying for many blessings for you.
You are in my thoughts!

I hope everything works out well for you, and sooner rather than later.
18 years is an amazing amount of time for a kidney to last. My sister experienced kidney failure at the age of nine, received a kidney at 11, and has had two more in the 21 years since then. I’m next in line to donate, as transplants are sadly just a treatment, not a cure.
I’m a somewhat long-time lurker, but I didn’t know until now that you’re a transplant recipient. Thank you for being open and honest about your health complications. As I’m sure you can imagine, this is especially close to my heart, and I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts.
Thank you for sharing your story with us. I don’t have any experience with organ donation, but I would like to think if I had been a donor, I would be very pleased to look down from heaven and see that I had given someone eighteen years of trouble-free kidney function.
I’m sending my happiest thoughts your way, for a donor match, a smooth transplant, a quick recovery, and a lifetime of good health!
Will be praying for you. Get well soon!
my thoughts and prayers are with you, wishing you a quick recovery :)
My thoughts are with you, I thought we were going through a rough time here in Christchurch NZ with our earthquake but it pales into insignificance with what you are going through. I wish you a speedy recovery. Take care.
I’ve been wondering about you. I’m praying for you and wish you the best. I love your blog and your positive outlook. Get lots of rest.
Sorry to hear it :(. My thoughts are with your during this time. I hope you have a speedy recovery!
Best wishes for a speedy and thorough recovery. Hope you’re back to making your amazing creations soon!!!!!
Praying for you continually, and sending lots of {virtual} hugs!! You are so amazing, and a huge inspiration to me, and MANY others! Just know that you have a giant cheering section, and we’re thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery!! We love you!!
Stay strong and best of luck for a match. You are a beautiful soul and a gifted woman. And clearly your mother is wonderful, too! You must get better soon so you can continue to wow us with your adorable creations! I’m rooting for you!
I wanted to send you my love and support and wish you all the best for this difficult process you are going through.
I wish you strength, patience and a wonderful recovery. Thankyou for all you have contributed to so many lives so far, and all the best for a speedy recovery which will have you back in the kitchen in no time.
Loving thoughts and prayers xx
Thinking of you and knowing that it will work out. I gave a kidney to my cousins wife last April…we are not blood relatives, she is doing wonderfully and so am I.
One thing to consider, even if your Mom is not a match, there is the alliance for paired donations…check it out (if your Mom doesn’t match you she might match someone else who has a need and donor that is not a match…sometimes they even to 3 pairs). Also, check out the web page for the National Kidney Foundation…today is World Kidney Day!!
((hugs))
Sending positive energy your way!!! Hang in there girl! Your future looks bright:)
Thinking of you and wishing you well. Hope you feel better very soon!

A match will be found, if not right away in your family, where can I go to get tested to see if I could be a match?
Think happy thoughts!
Pam
I not left a comment before, but always looked forward to your post and have had great fun trying them out. I hope you feel better soon and you shouldn’t feel that you let your deceased donor down because you have taken their gift and given it one of the greats gifts a wonderful life. My prayers are with you at this time and I hope all goes well.
Bakerella, Well wishes and hope for a speedy recovery. Thank you for sharing your passion and letting us in on a piece of your life.
I am praying for you Angie. I have a wonderful friend who lost her donated kidney too! She too, spent almost all of last year in the hospital with internal infections and a fungus. I have never heard her complain…like you thankful for each day God gives and lives every day with as much activity and enjoyment that can be sqeezed into it. She and I will both be praying for you as you go through this bump in the road.
Wishing you tons of hugs, prayers, and love! Hang in there!
Praying that a donor is found .. Thank you for your wonderful website
I’m so sorry and I hope that things work out. I know that whatever is supposed to happen will. I was wondering why you hadn’t updated the blog and I’m sorry that it’s because you are so sick! I can’t wait for your cheery posts again! Hugs from Port Orchard, WA!
The cake pops and cupcakes and cute has brought such joy and fun to thousands Just think – that deceased person gave you life through his/her kidney. You in turn give thousands joy and fun and life through your creative cakepops, cheerful posts and smile . I have no doubt that person would be honored to know that he/she was part of all that sweetness! Don’t you worry, you are not letting anyone down…. Now, about your down time. Why don’t you ask someone to do a little “pay it forward” by providing a “guest post” while you have to maneuver this short detour?
It’ll keep us all guessing and cheering for you!
Indeed, my thoughts and prayers are with you, too!
Hoping for your speedy recovery! Dont stop being positive, it will help!
Get Well Soon!
Things will work out!

My brother in law received a kidney transplant in San Fransisco 34 years ago amazingly enough his transplanted kidney is still functioning all the more reason for everyone ready your story to highly consider being on the national donors list what precious lives that have been blessed with transplants and our deepest thoughts and prayers for your self and family that another donor is found quickly what a gift of life someone can pass on..
Feel better soon!!! I hope you get a new kidney FAST and aren’t on dialysis long. With all the time between posting, I knew something was up and I was worried about you..it feels funny to say that to someone I don’t know, but I was. Take your time but get well soon!!!! Praying for you.
Wishing you all the best! We’ll be here waiting for whenever your ready to come back:)
Prayers for you and your kidney, and for the generous person who will be giving you the gift of life!
You may or may not believe in prayers but I do and I will be including you in mine. I know everything will work out and I pray for your speed recovery and a donor.
Get well soon miz B. Praying for you to have good care and good treatment to send you on the road to recovery!
I am sorry you’re going through this. My husband’s closest friend is on his second donated kidney. When I met him in high school he was on dialysis and had lost a year of school. He got his first kidney after that and it only lasted a few years (donated by his mom) because the anti-rejection meds destroyed it somehow. He went back on dialysis but then another close friend donated a kidney. I am hopeful that your mom can be a donor, but if not her then someone soon. I see that dialysis is absolutely not fun but at least it’s an option until you find the right match. I imagine you have tons of support in your ‘real’ life but it’s clear you have an amazing online support system as well. I’m keeping you in my thoughts.
Thinking of you in this time of need for you! I hope you get better soon!
sending tons of prayers, positive thoughts and hugs your way!! Get better soon Bakerella!
Your concern for your donor brought tears to my eyes. What an amazing woman you are. Your donor is so proud of you right now. You and that kidney have brought so much joy to so many. My nieces, 5, 9 and 11, and my 22 year-old daughter and I included. We had a blast making cake pops this past Christmas. They didn’t look nearly as nice as yours, we made a huge mess and then we packed them up in pretty cellophane bags and the girls gave them to their friends. You helped us make so many wonderful memories. Thank you for that. Don’t worry about us – you focus on you for a while.
Prayers work, I speak from experience. You will get better, and you will get a new kidney. Too many people have you in their prayers, myself included, for this not to happen. God bless you and your mom.
My thoughts & prayers are with you& your family. Please get your rest & have faith. A very dear friend of mine is battling PTLD from her liver transplant from a year and a half ago. I have survived 3 brain surgeries & 2 strokes with help from family & friends. I wish you the best of luck and great health soon.
Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
how do we get on a list to see if we are a potential match for you?
Please let me know. I live in the Seattle area and would be willing to be tested.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family

she also had recently some issues with her donored kidney and they were planning to take it out..but by God’s grace, it went fine..so be positive….everything gonna be fine…
my prayers and well wishes to you
guess wat..m a fan of you all the way from India..
I am sending you my thoughts and prayers. As odd as this may sound I am more than willing to see of I’m a match for you. I have no idea how this works but as I said i’m willing to try.
My good friend Karen is having this same experience. Her transplanted kidney is now failing after 15 years, and she, too had no idea they did such a thing. She is on the list as well. Her 1st transplant came from her brother, but no matches this time as yet.
Prayers all around.
I’m so sorry you are going through this. I’m praying for you!
You have always been my inspiration and am hoping you will be able to find a kidney as soon as possible. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. Stay positive and know that everything will work out. We love you.

Hugs and prayers to you…from one of your many followers.
Keep your head up! Thoughts & hugs coming your way!
oh wow, oh wow. I am thinking of you and hoping your mom is a match and you are on your way to the next phase of your life long long life. My daughter had a heart transplant with she was 8 months old–she’s almost 4 now and doing great. We try to live every day to the fullest and *try* not dwell on what will happen 5 or 10 or 20 years down the road but being a pharmacist I know long term there could be issues, that her donor heart may not last as long as one that was her own healthy heart from the start. I know the reality but we remain positive that her donor heart may very well be the only one she will need or it may not…regardless we love her everyday and focus on the now and present. Please know I am thinking of you, you have truly inspired many people throughout the world and made this world a much better place. You are an inspiration.
To anyone reading this, please consider becoming an organ donor if you are not already. There are so many people just waiting, and waiting, and waiting.
All the best. fingers crossed and preys to you and your family.
i feel your pain. my son’s kidneys failed at the age of 1 year old. i am an unsutaible donor. my husband was a match but at 1 our son was too small for an adult kidney.
It was 3 before he was well enough to do anything, and has had multipul surgery since, but he is now a tall, blonde haired, blue eyed out going handsome little rascal.
All the love and preyes got us through, we hope they do the same for you. xx
Hope everything works out in the best, fastest way! Hugs & prayers!!
Thanks so much for sharing your story with us—WOW—I LOVE feeling like I’m a part of a blogger’s life–Praying that your kidney would “get well” and that your mom will be a match. I hope you’re able to get back on your feet—back to your job and your amazing blog! Thanks for sharing—and I’m praying!

Oh, Honey…God love you…my dh’s first cousin has had both kidneys removed and dh was to be the donor….and he was so SO happy to do it…but he had one little tiny thing wrong with his tests (after many many tests) so they said no. I have not seen my husband that sad since he lost his dad. He (dh) has another first cousin on his mom’s side that recently had a transplant from his brother and is doing so SO well!! we are very grateful, so it happens every day. You have a lot to do, Honey…..My prayers are with you and I KNOW that you will get the best of care and that miracles do happen…keep positive thoughts, my dear…..I’ll have you in my heart…..you will be ok, I just know it!!!
Kathy

I encourage anyone who is healthy enough to become a donor, there our many people like the lovely Bakerella who are waiting for this lifesaving gift!

Cake pops can definitly wait although I’m sure after being in the hospital for so many days, you’re about to start baking from your bed. I wish you a speedy recovery and all I can say is that I hope this time in bed can bring you new inspiration for further creativity! I see Dr and nurse shaped pops in your future! My prayers are with you.
You will be in my thoughts and prayers! Praying your mom is a match for you and if not, that something comes to you soon. May your Angels watch over and be with you. You are such an inspiration.. may God continue to bless you!
I am so very sorry to hear that you are not doing too well. I have wondered where you have been and checked the site daily to see what you had been doing. I am praying that your mother is an appropriate donor and will be able to add more years to your wonderful life. If she is not, I hope you will let us know…who knows, maybe one of us is a good donor. Thank God for organ donors. We love you and will definitely be praying hard for your spirits to stay positive and your body to heal fully. I myself am on the organ donor list for when I pass and I hope that this puts the need in the hearts of your readers to sign up and be donors as well. As I always say, we aren’t going to need our organs when we are in Heaven!

I really hope the best for you and that either your mom is a match or that someone else can and will be a donor.
I think it is really brave of you to tell people about this, and maybe your story can help others to value there lives. I was sitting here felling sorry for myself because of a toothache, and then i read your story and all of a sudden it is not a big deal at all.
I send you a lot of good thoughts.
I have a good feeling about this, i am sure you will get through this, stronger and with a bigger appetit on life.
Best wishes from Cairo, Egypt

I’m so sorry to hear that. I was really hoping you had just been busy and hadn’t had time to update. I hope you get feeling better and you can find a new donor.

My thoughts are with you, I know how tough this is. My father has end-stage Polycystic Kidney Disease and we’re in the process right now of getting him on dialysis and my grandma died from the same type of kidney disease. I hope everything works out and that you’ll feel better soon.
I am also long time follower, and first time poster. Best wishes for you, you are in my thoughts and prayers!! XOXO

I saw a curious post on Pioneer Woman’s site and had to find out what the heck is going on. I hope you find a matching donor soon. Until then, drop us a note now and then to let us know how you’re doing and I will continue to send you my prayers for a speedy recovery.
Hi there Bakerella,
Well I’m so sorry for everything you are going through. I was so shocked to hear about your illness. I am a dialysis tech and understand whole heartedly what you are going through. I just want you to know I am praying for you and wishing you a speedy recovery and a quick transplant… Can’t wait for you to come back and pass your awesome knowledge and talent to us.
Wish you the best!! Hugs yo you too!!
Hoping everything goes the way you want it to. Speedy recovery to you!
Angie – So sorry to hear your news…….Keep your eye on the outcome you want……..You have the power to make it happen by sheer force of will……….You sound like a very strong person – and I think you will understand what I mean. In recent years I have gotten past melanoma, my house burning down and a diagnosis of autism for my son. My mental image is that of one of the horses in Central Park……(with blinders on………..so that his focus is straight ahead – no distractions). It works! Surround yourself with lots of positive people (no Debbie Downers!) and let them do for you……….!!!!! All of your fans are rooting for you to find an excellent match and have a record breaking recovery!
On and off reader who came over via PW today … praying for you.
First off…I have to say that I don’t think you are “letting down” your donor in any way, shape, or form. Their kidney was something you needed to survive, and you did. You got 18 wonderful years of life out of their gift, and you’ll get more out of another kidney when it comes. If someone got just one year out of an organ I was no longer going to use (ha!), I’d be happy to know that and hope they had enjoyed it to the fullest. :)
I hope they find a match for you very quickly (your mother or otherwise) and you’re back on your feet and enjoying things again soon.
And since this is my first time commenting here…thank you for all the smiles you’ve brought everyone with your creativity!
wow-we send you healing energy and happy thoughts to get you thru this–love from the left coast!
been wondering what was going on with no new posts! wish you the best and will keep you in my thoughts. don’t stress out and take this time to just “relax” and reflect! as always, thanks for sharing.
Stay positive and get well soon! Your new kidney is out there and just waiting to be found! Hugs!!!
Sending love and prayers your way.
We miss you tons and will be here when you get to feeling better. Until then our prayers and love are sent your way!
