Twelve Days

Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.

Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.

But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.

But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.

No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.

The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.

So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.

Hugs,
Bakerella

  34. I have checked in on your site from time to time and am a visitor from Pioneer Woman. You have my best wishes and prayers for a speedy recovery and the best possible outcome from the potential options you listed in your post. Two unsolicited suggestions. 1. Visualize your best possible oucome. Visualize as often as you can. 2. If you have to have surgery prepare by reading Peggy Huddleston’s book which if I remember correctly is called “Prepare For Surgery, Heal Faster, Heal Stronger” It is filled with visualization and menal thought tips to help people have the best possible surgery outcome. I found out recently that I have a health conditonand am now trying to heal enough to avoid surgery. So I am following this advice also. I wish you well on your journey to healing and health.xxoo

  35. Oh my goodness. First off, much love to you and many get well wishes and prayers are going your way. Second..it breaks my heart to hear of your kidney troubles. I have a dear cousin, Mery, who in many ways has been an older sister figure to me, who about five years ago began to experience kidney failure while in her mid-twenties. Both of her kidneys failed her, and it was a very sad and difficult time for her and the entire family. It was also very unexpected, but it allowed to an amazing act of love to occur: her sister, Sara, another of my lovely cousins, donated a kidney to her, and since then she has been doing wonderfully (and Sara is also healthy as a horse, with no signs of the genetic condition Mery has). However, your post reminds me that even after such a gift, there are always trials to be faced by a person with a kidney transplant, and I am sorry you are going through them. I wish you so much love, and hope all goes well in your search for another match. God bless and take care. Your blog is such a sunny spot in so many people’s days. :)

  36. Bakerella, your story has touched my heart. i work for a company, Pentec Health, that allows me to help dialysis patients every day. I sell a type of IV protein/dextrose for low albumin dialysis patients. I know what you are dealing with is so heavy. My heart and prayers are with you. I know you will are a great candidate for another transplant. 18 years with 1 is a long time. Dialysis is such a “big thing” for anyone. Home hemo is so helpful for someone as yourself. Maybe that will be a short-term option until a donor is secured. If your albumin falls below 3.5- let me know-it will make such a difference to be well nourished prior to transplant- no chocolate cake pops for awhile :( jkl, registered dietitan who loves cake!

  37. Sending good thoughts your way.
Hope you have a swift and easy recovery.

  38. May things soon swing your way so you will be back to sunny self again quickly. Your blog is missed, but your health is most important. Get well soon – utilize the healing power of cake pops and all your fans!

  134. Oh you SOO didn’t let the donor down!!! You got 18yrs out of that kidney, and like you said, SOOO not expected esp from a deceased donor. Hugs being sent your way, take your time in healing and recouping and have a sketch pad handy so that you can still make your cake pops on paper for now. When you get out you can go crazy with all those ideas you wrote down!

  140. Hugs and prayers for you.

  141. Hi Bakerella, I am so sorry that you have to have another transplant but to have 18 years on a donor kidney I gather is pretty good. I have a 44 year old who has bee diabetic for 34 years. She had a baby 4 years ago and the preg caused her kidneys to go into failure. She has been on dialysis for 2 years now and refuses to even consider a transplant because she is afraid of the drugs and that they will give her cancer. I don’t know how to change her mind, even having a little boy who is four years old and blind she thinks she will live longer on dialysis. She has been so sick ever since she went on dialysis and we nearly lost her this winter with pneumonia. Anyway I just wanted to tell you how much I admire what you have done with your life and when I hear about someone getting 18 years of life I just want to show my daughter this is possible. I will put you in my prayers and hope that all goes well for you. I wondered how old your mom was? I would like to donate my kidney but I don’t know what age cut off is. I don’t know if you will even read this you have so many well wishers. Blessings Sandra

  142. OMG I had no idea you were going through this. My thoughts and prayers are with you and pray that you will be back on your feet soon and making fun cake pops. ((((hugs))))

  143. Lifting you up in prayer.

  144. Stay strong and be comforted by all of the positive energy coming your way. Feel better and get well soon!!

  145. if you need anything at all please do not hesitate to ask, I might be in Canada but can help at anytime. Rest as much as you can sending healing prayers your way.

  146. I’m so sorry to hear that I hope u get better soon(: I’ll have to make u some cake pops for your recovery(:

  147. Wishing you well from New Jersey! Prayers are with you!
Keep the FAITH it goes a long way and keeps you strong!

  148. Lots of hugs and well wishes to you! I’m a previous Dialysis Nurse so I know what you are going through and hopefully you will come off dialysis soon. If you haven’t started one yet it is probably a good time to start a diet that does not stress the kidney as much as a regular diet does. That may or may not help the tranplanted kidney but it’s worth a shot if it does help. Run it by your Nephrologist and see what he thinks. Good luck to you and hope you find a perfectly matched kidney soon!!

  149. You are in my prayers and hope that you get well soon!

  150. I only pop around every now and then but i had to stop and read this post-I just want to say your donor would be proud to have given you 18 years and i hope everything works out well!

  151. Hang in there! From the amount of comments this post got, you can be sure that a lot of positive energy is going your way. Be really proud of yourself because keeping a good spirit is a great part of the healing process. You’ll get better and soon enough will be baking away…
    Best wishes!

  152. My thoughts & prayers are w/ u during this BIG bump in the road. I pray for a speedy & healthy solution for u & that u are back up & doing all of your fantastic creations very soon!! Thanks so much for letting us know so that we all can pray for u!!

  160. Hi Bakerella,
My mom is 15 years out from her kidney transplant. She was fortunate to recieve a kidney from her brother. She has was on dialysis before her brother lovingly gave her his kidney. It is a very difficult journey for her. She has had several issues regarding infections in the last five years as well. I know that you are probably mentally and physically exhausted. I am sure you have heard plenty of advice, but I can’t help but try to lift you up so that you stay strong in your battle against your own body. Try to take your days one day at a time- don’t think to far into the future as to what might or might not happen, take care of your body and mind as to what is happening now, stay strong in your dedication to your health each and every day. You have so much love and support around the world. Let those things carry you through the bad days, and really live up the good days!!! If there is anything that I could ever do to help you through this I am willing to help you. Thank you for the joy that you have brought to me through baking!

  161. You are in our prayers. Take care of yourself. We are rooting for you!

  162. Praying that you would get through this tough time. You are amazing at what you do and pray that everything would work out. Our family will keep our Bakerella in our prayers. Hang in there :)

  172. Pray in JESUS name

  173. Hugs! I wish you the best!

  174. I don’t know you but am praying for you. Such a blessing to have one transplanted kidney last for 18 years! I have a friend, who is on her third transplanted kidney. The first from her dad, but didn’t last more than a year, then years of dialysis, then one from her brother, that lasted 5 years, and now on a kidney from her mom. We sometimes wonder ‘why?’ but friend is such an encouragement despite her lupus that attacks her kidneys. She looks to the Lord and knows that He’ll take care of her and that there is a reason for this. I don’t know if you know the Lord, but I pray that you do and that He gives you comfort and peace and that your mother will be a match or that another donor will come its way.

  175. Sending you big well wishes and a speedy recovery!!! I’m sure everything will go well :)

  176. Love and prayers to you…. *hugs*

  177. Get well soon Bakerella, you are amazing and I know you will pull through just fine!! :D

  178. I love your website, and I hope so much that things will go well for you. Much love coming your way!!

  179. Hugs & prayers to you Bakerella. I just had a great friend that had a kidney transplant…She had it done at UCLA. They have a program there called the kidney exchange program…basically give a kidney get a kidney. If your mom isn’t a match, but she is willing to donate a kidney, then they will find a match for you & so forth…check out this website. I don’t think this program is advertised enough, but it’s saved so many lives and allowed people to get a kidney way before they would have on a waiting list! Hugs!
