Hi guys. I guess you’ve probably noticed my absence from the website recently. Well, I’ve finally felt good enough to post something. So here goes. I’ve been in the hospital for the last twelve days and I’m still not sure when I will get out. Hopefully soon. Hopefully. I’m definitely ready.
Unfortunately, I was pretty sick when I arrived. I started out with an infection that made its way into my transplanted kidney and then into my bloodstream. Not good. Not fun.
But what makes matters much more difficult is that for more than a year now, my transplanted kidney has not been doing it’s best. I chose not to tell anyone because I wanted to focus on being positive, but I’ve slowly had to come to terms that my kidney, the wonderful gift of life given to me more than eighteen years ago will not be with me forever. Actually, something I never really expected to happen. But I was so young when I received it and it has done so superbly over the years, I never had a reason to question its lifespan. I’ve learned recently however, that 18 years is fantastic for a transplanted kidney and even better since mine was from a deceased donor. I can’t tell you how hard it is to accept that I will have to let this kidney go. Feelings of letting my deceased donor down fill my heart with sadness.
But it is happening. And faster than I anticipated. Before getting sick two weeks ago, I had begun the process to be re-evaluated for another kidney transplant and to be added to the transplant waiting list. In the meantime, my mom is being tested to be a possible donor. I had thought I would have time to do all of this and hopefully have surgery and not skip a beat with my job or with this website that I enjoy sharing with you so much.
No such luck. Since I’ve been here, I’ve started dialysis to take some stress off my distressed kidney while it tries to heal. The hope is that I would be on dialysis for a short while, giving my transplanted kidney time to recuperate. Then, go off dialysis and try to squeak a few more months out before surgery is needed.
The alternative, though which is just as possible is that 1) I’ll be on dialysis until my mom is confirmed as a donor or 2) My mom is not a potential donor and then I would stay on dialysis while I wait on the list for a kidney to become available.
So that’s what’s been going on. That’s the reason for the lack of cake pops and cupcakes and cute. I just wanted to let you know something and thank everyone for their wonderful and inspiring get well wishes. You guys are a huge bright spot in my life. You have no idea how much.
Hugs,
Bakerella
Bakerella my girls and I are huge fans of yours! We are wishing the best for you! Sending you Big sugary Hugs from Nebraska!

I’ve never commented here before, but I read regularly and have tried many of your amazing creations. Know that you are in my prayers. I believe God can miraculously heal, and I pray that He will do that for you.
Oh my gravy…you’re going through it for sure! My sister-in-law is a kidney transplant patient. She lost both her kidney’s at 14 due to strep (the real word is so long and I have no idea how to spell it). She received a kidney from a deceased donor at 18, and rejected it on the 30th day. Her dad gave her one of his kidney’s in 1984 and that did the trick for quite some time…long enough for her to get married and have a sweet baby girl (against all odds, of course). That kidney wasn’t working as much as she needed it to and in 2000 my husband (her brother) gave her one of his. At that point she had two kidney’s again…her dad’s and her brother’s. It hasn’t been all wine and roses since but she’s enjoyed way better health than anyone could’ve imagined. She will be 50 in July and we couldn’t be more thankful. Unfortunately her dad and brother (and mom too) have all passed on (mom in 2007, dad in 2009 and brother 2010 at 52), but I know they will all be in attendance for her huge milestone birthday. It won’t be easy, but there is hope Bakerella!! Wishing you a new high performance kidney and many years more to enjoy this thing we call life. Good luck and Godspeed!
i’m wishing you the very best at keeping your kidney as healthy as possible and the speediest location of a donor kidney. your site is so incredibly inspiring to me – i love how i can feel your smile through all your projects – and i hope you’ll be sharing happy news very, very soon.

Oh Bakerella! I have been wondering about the lack of Monday posts, knowing full well that there was a not so good explanation. We all love you dearly and hope that you find a match quickly which is followed by the most easy and speedy recovery possible. Stay strong and brave! We are all here for you!
Once upon a time there was a girl named Bakerella. She inspired many with her cute cake pops. One day when she was feeling down they all gathered ’round her to pray to ask God to heal her! — We are praying for your healing, girl! — You inspire so many!
oh, I am so sorry….and saying a prayer for your quick recovery. You are an amazing woman….creative, positive, and now we see how strong you are. All the best….take care of yourself…we will still be here….
Dearest Bakerella,
You give so much to people, are so uplifting and encouraging. I was sad to hear about how sick you’ve been – I thought you were busy globetrotting with your book, or creating yet another darling design to share…I discovered your site last year, during the second year of my 2 years of unemployment. Your fun ideas and sweet thoughts were such an encouragement. Well, wanted to thank you, and to let you know you are in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care, Anne
I’m so sorry to hear that and I will cross my fingers all the way from Sweden and I hope it reaches you and adds some extra strenght!
I don’t know if you are well enough to read all of these comments, but your website and book have brought so much fun and happiness into my and my kids’ lives that I couldn’t keep my keyboard quiet. I hope that things go as smoothly as possible for you. You will be in my prayers!
Thank you for having the courage to share this with us. I missed your posts and wondered what had happened. It sure sounds like you are in the right spot and getting the needed care. Here’s hoping for the perfect match from your mother and all good and healthy things after that. {{hugs}}
My cousin who is 15 only has 1 kidney due to cancer. That kidney is beginning to fail and they’re talking about transplants. I’m sorry you’re having to endure a similar situation! We will certainly keep you in our prayers!
((HUGS)) I’ll keep you in my thoughts & prayers.
Aw! :( I’ll be praying for u and your mother. I hope that everything goes well, and remember that you are so amazing and talented and wonderful! You and your mom are so super-brave :)

Prayers to you and your family as you negotiate all.
I hope you find a donor soon and my thoughts are with you. I bought your book for my little sister for Christmas though secretly wanted it myself. I think I’ll end up getting one for myself this week. I’m an organ donor and I’m moved when I know someone like you speaks out as a recipient on its positive effects in your life.
In Jesus name I pray that you be healed. God Bless.
Bakerella,
It broke my heart to read your post and to hear of your pain, not to mention the unknowns ahead.
The good news is that we are all rooting for you and your speedy recovery.
You are a fabulous person with a fabulous gift to inspire others.
I will keep you in my thoughts and in my prayers.
Don’t know if you’ll ever get to read this, with all the posts here, but I did want to mention something. Never would I have ever thought that you were ‘sick’. Your beauty and bubbliness makes up for all the icky you probably have been feeling inside. This may sound cliche, but you are truly an inspiration to us crafties and wannabe Bakerellas. God bless, dear.
Wow, we just never know what is going on behind the scenes, do we? I wish you a speedy recovery and hoping your mom is a perfect match and that things go well for both of you. What an amazing thing for a mom to be able to do.
Good luck to you and your mom, and the rest of your family. Wish you the very best! Thanks for sharing.
Prayers going up for you and for your Mother, that she is a perfect match.
Thank you for sharing so that we may join you in prayer on your journey. You are proof positive of the miracles of organ donation ~ it encourages non donors to re-think their decision and perhaps make a notation on their driver’s license. One person’s donation changes the lives of many .
Prayers for your Mom , too, as she tests to make a donation to you. Blessings.
Wow – look at how many posts there are on this site in a day!! So much love and so many prayers headed in your direction. You are such a dynamo – I am sure we will have you back soon! Take care of yourself and only think positive thoughts!!!!
Praying for you everyday Bakerella & asking God to provide the perfect donor for your sweet self so you can get back to a full life. Hoping you feel our love & prayers from your neighboring state of Alabama!

Oh, I started crying in the middle of your post. Even though I don’t know you personally, I’ve followed your blog for so long that I feel like I do know you, even if it is one-sided. I applaud your strength and optimism!! May God and your family stay by your side through this unfortunate ordeal.
Even though we don’t know each other, I love you because you are my sister in Christ. My prayers and thoughts are with you.
Oh, I forgot the best part. You hang in there and don’t give up the faith, as that will get you through this time. Sending prayers your way.
Wow, sounds so familiar it gives me goose bumps. My brother was the reciepient of my sisters kidney about 24 years ago. Back then the donor’s surgery was really radical. That kidney lasted for 17 years. At the time I was pregnant with my second child, so I was off the donor list. After 17 years my sisters kidney that was sustaining my brother pooped out. I went and got tested, and low and behold I matched good enough. So when I was 50, I gave my brother one of my kidneys. That was seven years ago, and every day we have him is a blessing. The surgery for me was so easy considering what my sister had to endure. We are one lucky family.
As a nurse who cares for many renal patients, I can understand (kinda) what you are going through. I know your positive attitude will carry you through…..that and the many prayers you are receiving RIGHT NOW! You are loved :)
Now get well soon and make somp’n CUTE!

Bless your heart. My brother is going through the same thing. He had a kidney transplant about 12 years ago and now he’s back on dialysis. Such an ordeal! My mom gave him a kidney the first go around – now it could be my stepdad, or me – we just don’t know yet.
I wish you the best and will be praying for a speedy recovery for you!!
xoxoxo
Keeping good thoughts for you, my virtual hero! There will be a donor in the blogosphere if your mom is not compatible!! XXOO
I know the odds of getting this far down in the comment line are slim, but I just wanted to pass along my best wishes to you and your family during this scary time. Hang in there!!

We are all here sending out our postive prayers for you!
I had a kidney bypass to restore blood flow to my “bad” kidney. Would there be a possibility that this would help. It is somewhat like a heart bypass (vein from leg, etc.). I had it done 12 years ago, and it is still working.
You are in my prayers.
We love you! Get better soon!
I am so sorry to hear this! I was wondering where you were. I will keep you in my prayers and please know that God is bigger than this so take peace in that.
xoxo
Elizabeth
Praying for you to get better!
I m SO sorry to hear what it going on! :( Way to stay positive and please know that my thoughts and prayers go out to you in this time of need. GOOD LUCK!!
I was worried something like this was happening when your posts weren’t as frequent. I’ll pray for an easy resolution to your current health problems. God’s will be done in your life. Love to you!
Your positive attitude, gratitude for the kidney you have, and your faith will bring you through. You are in my prayers. Thank you for all you give to us, your readers.
I wish you the best, and I hope your Mom is able to be a donor for you. Health problems are such a double edged sword–on one hand they just suck, and on the other hand they remind us of our fragility (in a good way) and the beauty of life. I hope your spirits stay high through this all!
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this very difficult time. You have touched so many people with your wonderful blog and beautiful cake pops….you have an army behind you!!
Thank you so much for taking time out to update. You will be in my thoughts.
Dearest Darling Bakerella,
You take good care of yourself. Your wonderful life could NEVER be any sort of a disappointment to God, let alone your donor/angel or any other human.
We all love you and your inspiring energy and humility.
You will be in my prayers even after you’re back creating. Hopefully, you wont be too inspired with ideas in your current envirnoment. xxoo Julie
My prayers are with you! I hope to see your cute cake pops on here again very soon.
So sorry. Keep your chin up! Sending prayers your way…
Best wishes! You are a strong, vibrant woman! Stay positive!
Dearest Bakerella ~
I am praying for a great recovery. Whether that comes from the healing of the precious borrowed kidney you already have, or the beautiful sacrifice of your mother, or by way of a transplant from elsewhere. I have been through a lot myself, and verses always give me hope and peace. I hope that these fill you with rest, peace, and calm.
Praying for you dear one ~ All my love <3
Proverbs 16:24 – Gracious words are a honeycomb,
sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.
Isaiah 58:8 – Then your light will break forth like the dawn,
and your healing will quickly appear;
then your righteousness will go before you,
and the glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.
Malachi 4:2 – But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its rays. And you will go out and frolic like well-fed calves.
Thank you for sharing this very personal piece of you, I sincerely wish you the best of health and that you find a new kidney very very soon!

I know it’s hard, especially to share it!! You need some rest, we’ll be waiting no matter how long ;)
Wish you a fast recovery, take good care!
thoughts and prayers to you and yours
Hi, I haven’t been around on your blog a lot for some time but I just read this post and I want to wish you to get well and to stay positive and I hope that everything will turn out okay for you.
Eveline.
Hoping you will receive your new kidney soon, whether from your mum or a donor.
I echo all the other comments.. you are an inspiration and everyone loves your work. Your blog is a gift to us all.
To think you went on your book launch and all the travelling/pressure associated with that all the while with a kidney not working quite as well as it should :-(
Take lots of care and do as those Drs say – put your feet up etc
Thinking of you
