This IS the best chocolate sheet cake ever. And I’m not just saying that because it’s the only one I’ve ever eaten. It IS delicious. And super moist and oh so chocolatey.
I’m officially in love. With the cake, not the Pioneer Woman. Well, maybe PW, too.
If you don’t know who I’m referring to (laughing as I type that), here’s her site:
I visited her and the family earlier this year at her ranch in Oklahoma and we baked cupcakes and made cake pops for some guests. Actually, she made this chocolate sheet cake recipe then for the cupcakes we used. However, we made a different frosting to decorate with so I didn’t get to experience the full effect. I don’t know what took me so long to try her complete recipe. I’m kicking myself now. It’s so easy and pretty darn quick, too. You don’t even need a mixer. Nope. No mixer. But you do need a 12 X 18 jelly roll pan. I think that’s what deterred me a little. I kept picturing a 12 X 18 cake sitting on my counter. And, well… that’s a lot of cake.
But then, a couple of weeks ago I received a surprise from the UPS guy… or girl…
It was PW’s soon-to-be-released cookbook. I was so excited to see it. I got a preview of the cover back in March and here it was. Finished. Full of Pictures. And Full of Recipes.
Including her Chocolate Sheet Cake.
That settled it. No more procrastinating. Chocolate Sheet Cake here I come.
You’ll need 2 cups flour and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to start. Easy enough.
Then pour on the sugar. Two cups of the sweet stuff. I like how this is going.
Melt some butter. Two sticks. Thank you.
While it’s melting, stir together 1/2 cup buttermilk, two eggs, 1 teaspoon baking soda…
And add a little vanilla. A teaspoon to be exact.
Back to the butter. Drop in four heaping tablespoons of cocoa please.
Mix that all up.
Add a cup of boiling water and stir. Let bubble for just a minute and turn then off the heat.
Then pour that over your flour, sugar and salt mixture and stir it all together.
Add the buttermilk mixture and stir until it’s smooth.
Anyone having a little deja vous here? I kinda feel like PW right about now with all these step-by step photos. But really, I couldn’t resist posting all of these pouring shots.
See… here’s another one. Look at that batter. It’s glorious.
Place the pan in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes. I did 18.
And while the cake is baking, you can make the icing.
Melt some more butter. One and 3/4 sticks this time. Add four more heaping tablespoons of cocoa and stir together.
Then add 6 Tablespoons milk and one teaspoon vanilla. Here’s the only thing I did differently. I didn’t have any milk. I know… that bites. So instead I used four tablespoons of evaporated milk mixed with two tablespoons of water. I could have gone all six evaporated, but I wanted to play it safe.
Add ONE POUND of confectioner’s sugar. Thank you again PW. This is definitely going in the right direction.
Mix that all up really, really good. You can also add a 1/2 cup of chopped pecans, but I didn’t have any of those either. And actually, I’m glad I didn’t. This cake was just the way I like it. Non-crunchy.
After the cake is baked , immediately pour on the good stuff. Work the icing all over the cake, so you’ll have less spreading to do. Those little lumps in the photo are just bits of confectioner’s sugar. If you don’t add nuts, you’ll have to stir this really good to get them all out or sift your sugar first. But who has time for that when this cake is waiting.
Let the cake cool completely. Just kidding. Just dig right in.

By the way, this 12 X 18 cake taking up space on the counter? Don’t even think twice about it. The cake won’t last that long.

I have tried many many of her recipes. This cake was one of the first that I have tried. OMGoodness. So good. I have the Chocolate Truffles with Sea Salt up on my to do list. I’ve made a lot of her recipes, they have all been fantastic! A couple of my favorites are the MM sandwhich, the lasagna, and the bread pudding with whiskey cream sauce. YUM!

i have made the quick and easy apple tart! its to die for! easy, simple, and you casn have it for breakfast without the icecream also. i made it for guests the other morning and i could keeping them comming out fast enough. they were delish!!!! you wont go wrong with this one i promise.

Her baked lemon pasta is to die for! Very light and yummy. Perfect as a side dish or good enough to be the whole meal.
Her mashed potatoes are TO.DIE.FOR! I make them every year for Thanksgiving. So yummy…so good….

Oh, I have tried many of her recipes. Overall, my husband loves her Brisket Baby recipe. This has become his favorite meal. Along side I serve Crash Potaotes. Last Christmas I made her Rum Cake…OMG! Absolute heaven! And the zucchini cakes…I dare make the chocolate cake…but will probably do so ASAP!

OMG, Her “Not your Granny’s Mac & Cheese” recipe is to DIE for. I make it at least once a month! It’s a spicy mac n cheese with onions, green peppers, garlic, jalepeno’s, Pepper Jack cheese (I add cheddar cheese to the mix). MmMmMMmm… I’m going to double the recipe and make this for a side dish for thanksgiving this year. I don’t use nearly as much cream, so it’s not as milky. Just thinking about it makes me want to make some! Here’s the recipe!

I love Ree! And can’t wait to meet her on Wed. when she comes here for her book signing. I’ve made the chocolate cake too and it is to die for, but one of my all time favorites that I think you should try next is her coconut cream pie!
I’ve made a few of Ree’s recipes, not for lack of love, but more for lack of time, haha. I’ve done the delicious vodka tomato cream sauce and the onion straws, among others. Both great!

I’ve made this recipe dozens of times (it’s the classic Texas Sheet Cake), however I substitue coffee for water. It gives the chocolate a little oomph.
The great “Marlboro Man’s Favorite Sandwich” is AMAZING! Even my kids will eat it ~ and that’s sayin’ something!!!

I tried her Delicious, Creamy Mashed Potatoes and they were soooo good!!! saved me a lot of time, too, when i was able to cook them the night before. Delish!

Ahhhh..just made PW’s rosemary rolls last night. Had them for breakfast. I brought a few leftover rolls into the office this morning. People are loving them (and me!)
I have made Ree’s Sleepin’ In Omlet. I love it. I have made it for family brunches, when I have visitors, or just for me and my hubby. I love it as is or you can change up the meat and veggies that you add.
That is a great recipe, I have been making it for 43 years :) the original Chocolate Sheet Cake has 1 teaspoon of cinnamon added. It really makes the cake and doesn’t overpower it. I like chopped walnuts in the frosting. It makes it more like my homemade fudge.

This book looks amazing. I’m a self-admitted, hoping-never-to-recover cookbook addict. PW’s book looks to have everything . . . great recipes and that cozy, wholesome feel. Marlboro Man’s favorite sandwich is VERY good, as are the hot crash potatoes, Mystery rolls (even fed those to people that didnt’ “like” blue cheese). If you ever need an easy appetizer, the jalapeno poppers with cream cheese and bacon are the first empty platter at a party!
I’ve read her blog and tagged recipes to someday make but I have yet to make them. It would be so much easier if they were all in some sort of recipe book or….waiiittt!!! They are!! :)

Her cinnamon rolls are to die for…..and my family also loves her chicken spaghetti and the potato bundles. And yes, we’re also huge fans of the sheet cake…..amazing stuff.
i just made her garlic roasted potatoes a few days ago and they were heavenly! and soooo easy to make.
I use The Pioneer Woman’s recipes all the time. They’re fantastic!
I have not tired anything form her site, but I am DYING to try her rosemary dinner rolls. They look delicious!!!!

I love Bakerella and Pioneer Woman. I have made the cake bites from your blog and received many raves for the taste and cuteness. I also love the Pioneer woman’s blog and recipes. I made her olive cheese bread which was absolutely easy and delicious. Her blog and yours are two of my favorites. Every time I see a new recipe I just ooooh and aaaaah with delight and amazement of where you both come up with these yummy ideas.
If I don’t win I will without a doubt be buying her book and if I do win I will buying her book for friends.

This is my ONLY chocolate cake and cupcake recipe!! I’ve been making this cake for a while now, but I use a cut and pasted version from her blog, printed out on a sheet (and now covered with chocolate splashes and notes). I’d LOVE the real book. Thanks for featuring it.

You had me at “Melt butter”. At “Two sticks”, I could hardly see. And then when it came time for the icing, I read “Melt more butter” and promptly fell over. Ooohhhhhhhhhh.
When I picked myself up, I visited Pioneer Woman. And there I read with avid interest the recipe for the Tres Leches Cake. I’m torn now of course. My birthday is coming up…do I stick with my original choice of Lemon Coconut Cake with Coconut Icing and Raspberry Filling or swithc things up and make the Chocolate Sheet Cake? Or satisfy my wanting for the Tres Leches Cake? Or the Red Velvet Cake Balls I saw here? Oh my, such decisions. I think perhaps I will have to make all four recipes and celebrate all month long, enjoying a different delicious and delightful cake creation each week.
Ah, what the heck, I might as well make the Chocolate Sheet Cake now. The memory of it is not going to leave me alone until I do! :-)

Every PW recipe that I have made has come out PERFECT. One of our favorites are her ‘Simple. Perfect. Enchiladas.’ SO YUMMY & EASY.
So many to try…onion blue cheese sauce to eat with a Ribeye…yum. And anything that is a stuffed mushroom recipe. ANY of them. OMG…I’m hungry now.

My husband and I love PW’s website… Her cooking page is one of the first places we look when we feel like cooking something fabulous. Of her recipes, we think her bread pudding and stuffed mushrooms are to die for!
I love PW. I have made her club crackers wrapped in bacon and they are a hit to whatever party I bring them to.

I think I get a cookbook in the mail at least every other week and I keep saying I’m going to stop (yes, I am a cookbook addict) but I can’t bring myself to make them stop coming. I just recently discovered the Pioneer Woman, I made her Chicken Parmigiana recipe for dinner last week – my husband declared it delicious, can’t wait to see the cookbook. Now I’ll have to make chocolate sheet cake!

Oh my god! I have this recipe printed and saved in my recipe book earmarked for me to make, it’s been there for ages! I nearly made it once, but it took too long to find pecans and I’m easily distracted. It does look amazing! :)
I am a firm believer in “Pasta alla Marlboro Man.” Ree knows what she is talking about when she says that these recipes are “man-pleasin’!” And, if you try this recipe, I will give you this hint: The more thyme, the better! Yum yum!

I LOVE PW! She’s one of my very favorite food bloggers. I love her step-by-step photos. I’ve tried many of her recipes, and she doesn’t steer you wrong, which is why I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this book. If I can’t get it here, I’ll just have to ask for one for Christmas. Haha.
You wouldn’t believe it… her bread pudding! And it really tasted good. My little brother, who is quite picky when it comes to dessert, made me do it again and again.

If you haven’t tried her onion strings…oh baby…go, go go! These never make it to the table. We stand around as they come out of the fryer and eat them like savages. Smiling, groaning savages that is. :)

Do I know PW? Of course, who doesn’t! :) Her Cinnamon Rolls are honestly in my oven right now. They were my project of the day! First couple of tins are out and frosted and my youngins have already had some for an after school snack! Will have to try the cake soon, looks delish!
