Sweet Soldiers

IMG_4878

My friend Cupcake Julie had her Christmas party this past weekend.

You may remember her gorgeous sugar-themed decorations.

IMG_4869

Stuff like this.

(Here’s the post from last year if you want to see visions of sugar plums dancing in your head for the next few days. Make sure you check out the kids play bakery, too. It’s incredible.)

It’s hard to imagine, but this year was even more beautiful than last.

IMG_4711

Colonel Cupcake was there again this year.

IMG_4838

And so was this guy.

IMG_4849

And this one.

IMG_4857

And this little one. These guys were all over the place.

You may also remember seeing them from the Toronto Book Signing Post.

Teatro Verde is the only store I’ve actually seen them sold in. It made me happy to see them on display.

Anyway, I love ’em. So festive and sweet.

As a surprise for Julie, I made a few cake pops inspired by them to bring to the party.

Wanna see?

IMG_4548

Cupcake Nutcracker guys.

She squealed. I smiled.

They’re double decker cake pops, too. Tricky and a little over the top, but I couldn’t resist.

I also made some Christmas Tree cake pops.

IMG_4592

Much easier. But instead of doing them in green, I kept them in her holiday color scheme.

I really like them like this.

Speaking of trees, Julie’s party decorations this year also included two new ones.

IMG_4832

This cheerful pink one covered in snowmen.

IMG_4791

And this whimsical upside down tree.

Amazing, huh.

IMG_4664

But that’s Julie.

IMG_4687

Here’s her dessert table. Filled with tons of treats.

IMG_4630

Cookies and candy.

IMG_4697

Cake Pops, of course.

IMG_4701

Mini cupcakes from Crumb in New York.

IMG_4650

Macarons and much, much more.

IMG_4722

Completely lovely. I wish you could have been there with me.

But since you weren’t … how about a couple of cute guys to keep you company?

IMG_4965

I just so happen to know of two that are about ten inches tall.

I thought I’d part with these to share them with one of you.

Enter for a chance to win these two sweet soldiers.

  • Simply leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite thing to eat on Christmas. Real food this time. Something non-sweet. I was on sugar overload this weekend and I need some ideas. I know you guys will have some great ones.

  1. In keeping with my Hispanic heritage, my family always celebrates Christmas Eve (Noche Buena) with a delicious, slow-roasted pork. Add some yuca seasoned with plenty of garlic & olive oil for a side dish and congri (black beans & rice). You can find any/all of these items at your local Cuban/Caribbean/Hispanic (though probably not Mexican) market. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  2. roast beef or prime rib! yum meat.

  3. Fried Egg Sandwiches – the traditional Christmas morning breakfast in our English house. White Bread, Fried Egg and HP Brown Sauce! In our American House – Moon over Miami!

  4. I’m going with Newfoundland dressing. We stuff the bird with it, so I guess others would call it stuffing, but ours is made with bread, savoury and butter, and is sooo good, and so unlike anything else!
Turkey is the clear second favourite! :-)

  5. My favorite cookie is one that my grandmother used to make us: kolochky. They are dough rolled around a filling, in our case a walnut/honey mix. So delicious and so reminiscent of Christmases at my grandparent’s house.

  6. My favorite is homemade lasagna! Mmmmm….I can’t wait!!

  7. We like to go non-traditional and easy on Christmas. This year we are having chorizo migas for breakfast and making tamales together for dinner. Good times and good food.

  8. I can’t imagine anything more beautiful. It’s like a fantasy world. I love Nutcrackers.

    Merry Christmas.

  9. i make spagetti ( yes spagetti) and cheese every year since my grandmother passed away so creamy and stringy no breaking ot the spagetti sticks please that makes it fun

  10. Our Christmas food is very different from yours (I´m Costa Rican and also a vegetarian) but I do enjoy cooking for others. Have to say that the one I´ve gotten the best feedback from is lamb marinated in white wine marinade (chardonnay, oregano, sage, mustard seed, red onion, garlic), you leave that overnight and then when you are ready to cook what you do is cover it with dijon mustard and sear it. Then take the solid part of the marinade, make a “bed” in a dutch oven, place the seared lamb and pour part of the liquid over it and bake. As my husband says: it tastes like heaven with a piece of glory. The merriest Christmas to you (and PS- you are getting amazing at making those!!!)

  182. Everything – spiral ham, turkey, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, etc.!

  183. Spiral-sliced ham (sugary crust of course) stuffed in sweet potato yeast rolls…YUM

  184. Homeade mashed potatoes!(:

  185. My favorite Christmas treat is this cheesy broccoli cauliflower casserole my sister makes. Its the best!

  186. My favourite “non sweet” item for the holidays is my Dad’s stuffing and turkey. Of course my mom insists that the stuffing recipe is hers and she taught him everything he knows. But I know the stuffing recipe comes from this rare cookbook from a little cooking shop that used to be in London, Ontario, Canada “McCalls”. My dad is also a surgeon, and it is the best trussed bird on the block! No stuffing leaking out his bird.LOL!

  187. I love eating Chicken with stuffing and cranberry sauce!

  188. Every year on Christmas Day, my hubby and I have a lobster each for dinner. We melt tons of butter, wear old clothes, open a bottle of wine and have a feast. It is so much fun!! Oh, and last year I made your oreo truffles for dessert; this year, maybe I will again!

  189. love love love them! i love to eat sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows at christmas dinner!

  190. My sister always visits from the city and brings us the most wonderful cheeses – living in a small town, we don’t have access to the variety that she does. That is always my favorite thing to eat.

  191. I think my favorite would be cheesy potatoes. I loved the new cakepops you did this year so cute. Have a Merry Christmas.

  192. Oops, I meant Rebel!

  193. sugar cookies!!! but now, maybe cake pops?

  194. stuffing!!!
I always wonder why I don’t make it more often when I do get some. Sooo good.

  195. My favorite non-sweet food for Christmas … I love sausage/cornbread dressing, spinach salad (without mushrooms) and home-made yeast rolls. I am still on a sugar high from just looking at that Christmas party. Those Christmas tree cake pops just might make it to the family dinner this year.

  196. Definitely southern sweet potato casserole loaded with brown sugar and pecans. Makes my Northern heart go all Yankee!

  197. I am SO in love with all the beautiful candy decorations!! GORGEOUS!!!! <3

  198. My favorite thing to eat at Christmas…wow, that’s harder than I thought. My husband makes an incredible smoked turkey! But he has also perfected his fired turkey! Both VERY yummy! However, after years of trying I finally figured out my grandmothers cornbread dressing. I make it every year now and each time I taste it, it takes me back to being a little girl and being at her holiday table. She truly was an amazing “southern” cook.
    Merry Christmas to all!
