Sweet Soldiers

IMG_4878

My friend Cupcake Julie had her Christmas party this past weekend.

You may remember her gorgeous sugar-themed decorations.

IMG_4869

Stuff like this.

(Here’s the post from last year if you want to see visions of sugar plums dancing in your head for the next few days. Make sure you check out the kids play bakery, too. It’s incredible.)

It’s hard to imagine, but this year was even more beautiful than last.

IMG_4711

Colonel Cupcake was there again this year.

IMG_4838

And so was this guy.

IMG_4849

And this one.

IMG_4857

And this little one. These guys were all over the place.

You may also remember seeing them from the Toronto Book Signing Post.

Teatro Verde is the only store I’ve actually seen them sold in. It made me happy to see them on display.

Anyway, I love ’em. So festive and sweet.

As a surprise for Julie, I made a few cake pops inspired by them to bring to the party.

Wanna see?

IMG_4548

Cupcake Nutcracker guys.

She squealed. I smiled.

They’re double decker cake pops, too. Tricky and a little over the top, but I couldn’t resist.

I also made some Christmas Tree cake pops.

IMG_4592

Much easier. But instead of doing them in green, I kept them in her holiday color scheme.

I really like them like this.

Speaking of trees, Julie’s party decorations this year also included two new ones.

IMG_4832

This cheerful pink one covered in snowmen.

IMG_4791

And this whimsical upside down tree.

Amazing, huh.

IMG_4664

But that’s Julie.

IMG_4687

Here’s her dessert table. Filled with tons of treats.

IMG_4630

Cookies and candy.

IMG_4697

Cake Pops, of course.

IMG_4701

Mini cupcakes from Crumb in New York.

IMG_4650

Macarons and much, much more.

IMG_4722

Completely lovely. I wish you could have been there with me.

But since you weren’t … how about a couple of cute guys to keep you company?

IMG_4965

I just so happen to know of two that are about ten inches tall.

I thought I’d part with these to share them with one of you.

Enter for a chance to win these two sweet soldiers.

  • Simply leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite thing to eat on Christmas. Real food this time. Something non-sweet. I was on sugar overload this weekend and I need some ideas. I know you guys will have some great ones.
  • Deadline to enter is Tuesday, December 21 at 7:00 pm ET. TIME’S UP. Winner announced below.

  7. Oh my gosh I’m 13 years old and I would love to have my own bakery someday I really love to bake and do all that stuff. The reason I love this wedsite is because I get a lot of ideas so when i have the time, I could bake something. And I’m also telling a lot of people about this website, and my cousin is having her 15 year old party and her theme is CandyLand so I would like to tell her about all the amazing things.

  8. We always have my Crab Dip. It’s made with cream cheese and Cream of mushrooms and lots of other stuff. Chilled overnight and served with crackers or garlic rubbed toast rounds. My kids love it so much…

  9. I would have to say my favorite thing is almost anything my mom made. She was the most amazing cook. Of course I was never allowed in the kitchen because I was a chatter box. She passed away in 1996 along with her recipes. She never measured or wrote anything down and needless to say I would do anything just to taste anything that was like hers. Christmas Eve was always Gumbo, potato salad and homemade rolls with honey. I always go to your website when I need to make something special. You are my recipes that I never got. I hope you all have a merry chirstmas and remember write your recipes down for your loved ones so they will always be reminded of you and traditions.

  10. Oh I am so excited! This is my favorite Christmas house ever! Your friend Julie is amazing! And your nutcracker cakepops rock! So cute!!! My favorite….is my mom’s mac and cheese!!!! Total comfort food. The crunchy cheese on top is the best part!!!! I love Christmas ;)

  11. Candied Sweet Potatoes Yum!!!!

  12. Our Christmas tradition is spaghetti and homemade meatballs with fresh garlic and parsley simmered all day in marenara sauce with fresh mushrooms. We also have an Italian salad with a zesty homemade dressing made with vinegar and oil and then lots of fresh french bread slathered in butter to go with it. This is pure comfort food, it is an awesome meal.

  13. My mom makes smoked salmon from scratch using either brandy or vodka. It takes a week of turning the thing and splashing it with the alcohol. Then we have it on thin toasted bread with parsley and minced onions. Yum! We have it every year.

  14. I trade Christmas dinner with my sister, I love to cook so when it is my turn I plan a different menu every time. Over the years I have to say my very favorite is cornish hens. I buy one small hen per quest and rub them down with olive oil and sprinkle with my favorite spices. I stuff each hen with my favorite herb stuffing and cook. I decorate each plate with a beautiful hen and Christmas greens. Make plenty of colorful veggies to add to your table, I try to have as many greens, reds yellows and orange veggies as possible, think out of the box try pattypan squash and butternut squash they pair up beautifully with asparagus and spinach!

  15. Dear Bakerella,

  21. I know it’s way past the deadline for the give away but I just wanted to share my favorite food with you anyway. You’re amazing in every way. My favorite Christmas food in the whole wide world is my mom’s recipe for home made manicotti with homemade sauce (of course). Believe it or not, I have never tasted store bought manicotti. (Spoiled, I guess) My mom always made them from scratch and now I make them for my family.

  29. I made my first batch of cake balls last weekend which were delicious and a HUGE success. My hubby ate a ton, as did both of our co-workers! The only real trouble I had was getting the chocolate coating on the outside of the cakeballs so smooth, like all of yours. I froze my cakeballs and made sure my chocolate was totally melted, but the spoon messed the coating and it never looked smooth. What can I do to make mine look more like yours?

  38. My favorite part of Christmas morning is the dessert spread, seeing all of the wonderful treats my grandmothers and mother have made over the days before with so much care and their incredible, one-of-a-kind touches, makes the season unforgettable. xoxo, pink lady ?

  46. My family has a running joke about our Christmas Eve tradition where we dine on delish apps such as shrimp and cocktail sauce and cheese and crackers. Although most importantly my favorite part is the Port Wine Cheese Log which we so fondly call the “Nut cheese log” as the cheese is shaped into a log and rolled in sliced almonds. I have no idea what this cheese is made out of but I swear it’s the most addictive thing ever!

    Happy Festivus from NY!

  93. I love the decorations. What a beautiful party! My favorite holiday dish….mashed potatoes…made with cream and lots of butter. They are good even without the gravy! YUMMMM.

  97. For Christmas dinner we must have “potato boats” as my boys call them… twice-baked potatoes with mushrooms and parmesan.

  98. We have fondue all day long – cheese, wine/chicken broth for the meat and potatoes and then chocolate later in the day. A fun tradition that we love.

  99. My family is Hispanic so we have a very tradional hispanic dinner. We have pork, rice, beans, sweet and fried plantatins and verything in between. My favorite food to eat is my grandmother rice and beans. She makes her rice with bacon fat and its amazing. Her beans, I do not know what she puts in them but they are to die for. We can normally have these types of foods everyday but for Christmas dinner is different and very special.

  100. My favorite holiday dish is my Dad’s broccoli casserole. Rice, broccoli, cheese and tons of mushrooms, yum!

  101. My nana’s green beans. Even though she is no longer with us, we still make her famous green beans. We are southern gals so we boil them with ham chips until all the water is cooked out and the salty goodness is still left to flavor the beans! Happy eating!

It has this amazing sauce that my husband makes with finely shredded pork with a bunch of condiments (like fried chopped garlic, green onions, ground up pork rinds, fresh lemon to squeeze on top)… so it’s kinda like ‘build your own noodle’ . We have the sauce then other yummy condiments in little bowls, so you can put on whatever you like on it!

  123. Bakerella, I am vacationing in the Carolinas for Christmas and they treated me to an old Southern Recipe that I think would be devine on Christmas morning, called Shrimp and Grits. It is so colorful and flavorful, and adds a gourmet touch with minimal labor for a very special holiday. If you have not tried this, please treat yourself (even if I don’t win, *smile).

  129. We have a traditional Polish Christmas and my favorites are my mom’s pierogi. If I could only master the recipe…..

  130. Yorkshire pudding! Happy Holidays!

  131. Actually, we usually do pulled pork on Christmas, at least since it’s just been my husband and I. I go all out at Thanksgiving, but with 2 small children and the craziness of gifts and Santa, I need something easy! Pulled pork sandwiches, sweet potato fries, and some honey glazed carrots. Yum!

  132. I have an unnatural love of potato salad. And I eat tons of it during the holidays.

  133. It’s not quite a tradition, but more years than not, I’ve made Hot German Potato Salad for Christmas or New Years dinner. Whether an ode to our Bavarian ancestry or an alternative to mashed potatoes, I’m definitely looking forward to it this year…

    Merry Christmas!

  134. O Christmas day I make finger foods, i.e. sausage balls, ham delights, cocktail wienies, that kind of thing and we snack on them all day :)

  135. My family always makes prime rib. That with some mashed potatoes is enough to help combat the sugar overload from all the fudge, sugar cookies, and homemade peppermint bark we consume.

    Have a Merry Christmas!

  136. My mom always makes these amazing cheese & sausage balls and a yummy cheesy dip to go with them. They always make me happy at Christmas time : )

  137. We make a cheesy potato casserole to go with the ham my parents serve for dinner. They go soooooo well together. LOVE IT!! Your nutcracker pops are over the top, yes, but oh, so very cute!! The trees rock too!

  141. My favorite thing to eat at christmas would have to be my grandfather’s menudo. It is delicious and a Christmas dinner staple.

  142. My favorite thing is the Santa cake we make every year. It is a fun family tradition and tasty too!

  143. Hmm… my mom makes a fantastic dip (cream cheese, chili in a can, cheddar cheese) that just reminds me of being a kid and devouring it with my family at the holidays!

  144. my moms dressing

  145. I love my mom’s homemade dressing. Nothing better.

  146. My grandma always gets the best rolls. We eat them with Bear Lake Raspberry jam. Delightful!

  147. Christmas Eve dinner has always been my favorite. Why? Because it was the only night of the year that everyone got to pick what they wanted to eat. If that meant everyone ate something different, it didn’t matter. If it cost $50, it didn’t matter. Christmas Eve was all about our wants, not our needs. My usual choice as a child was lasagna. As an adult and parent, I plan on continuing the tradition with my family. My kids usually choose corn dogs or mac and cheese… but they’re only 4 & 2 :)

Happy Holidays & good luck to everyone!!!

  148. Ham and sour cream potatoes….so delicious! That’s what I will probably eat every Christmas Eve for the rest of my life…and I’m only 25 so let’s hope that’s a while! :)

  149. I love home made turtles candies at Christmas!

  150. My family doesn’t really have a traditional Christmas meal. I’ll be spending it at my in-laws this year, and they usually have spaghetti!

  151. We usually do Mexican (or TexMex to you non-Texans) at my in-laws’ house for Christmas. I love cheese and onion enchiladas, queso and chips, and basically anything smothered in lots and lots of cheese.

  152. I love love love prime rib during Christmas dinner….marinated and coated with black pepper, wine and chuncks of the best sea salt…melts in your mouth, literally (with a side of garlic mashed potatoes)

  153. I would so love to win these beauties….My fav has to be the Ham and the MAC and CHEESE that my mom makes!

    Merry Christmas!

    Lori

  154. This sounds crazy but it was so good the day after Thanksgiving that we’re making it for Christmas Eve dinner.
Ham wraps. Baked ham, potato salad, coleslaw, and baked beans, all wrapped up in a soft tortilla. Makes a simple tasty dinner.

  155. The best meal is prime rib roast, garlic mashed potatoes, Julia’s horseradish sauce, a vegetable and fresh yeast rolls. That’s the perfect Christmas meal. Oh. And wine.

  156. I love to eat lamb on Christmas, it isn’t exactly traditional but it’s delicious nonetheless :)

  157. Prime Rib with Horseradish and Cranberry sauce for Christmas dinner.

  158. I love having my mom’s turkey noodle soup. Usually we have a turkey at Christmas and then make soup with the leftovers. It’s great for when the weather’s cold or fickle as Texas weather goes!

  159. Fresh green beans with bacon and onions…yumm!!

  160. On Christmas eve almost all of my family comes over including my cousins from georgia this year! we all have fun reminiscing while my uncle and dad disappear to get…Chinese Food! yep we eat chinese on christmas eve. Traditional dinner every year!

  161. My favorite thing to eat is my mother’s cheesy hash brown potatoes. She mixes soup, cream cheese, shredded cheese, salt and pepper to taste, and hash browns all together and then bakes it. Paired with ham and crescent rolls, it is my favorite Christmas meal by far! I’ve had different variations of the cheesy hash brown potatoes, but nothing comes close to Mom’s. But then again, I might just be biased. : )

    Happy Holidays!

  162. This is so amazing! I love cupcakes and this place looks like a dream come true!

  163. OK! My favorite Christmas treat is pancakes in the morning. Or is it cookies in the afternoon? I think I’ll go with pan cakes. ;) I would LOVE that nutcracker!

  164. It’s so simple, but I LOVE mashed potatoes. My first plate of food at Christmas Day dinner is usually just three or four scoops of the stuff! Yummm.

  165. French Meat Stuffing, mincemeat pie, honey ham, and baked apples. Mmm, I’m getting hungry already.

  166. My favorite Christmas food item is my aunt’s “secret-recipe” crab cakes. We make mini ones every year… about 10 dozen.
A little spicy and oh! so-yummy

  167. Being a southern girl, my favorite is my mom’s cornbread dressing. Yum! No one makes it like mom! :-)

  168. Cheesy potatoes with corn flakes on top! I introduced them to my husband’s family at Christmas two years ago, and now they are a must there too.

  169. My absolute favorite thing to eat at Christmas time (and I only get it at Christmas time) is sweet potato casserole made with bananas & topped with walnuts & brown sugar… YUMM! Already looking forward to it! :D

  170. Last night my husband made Flat Iron Steak with Chimichira Sauce…. amazing…..

  171. I love deep fried turkey! I live in the south and it’s the only way to eat turkey. It stays so moist and juicy.

  172. i think my favourite non sweet to have at christmas would be my mum salmon and mushroom dip! it’s so delicious and she makes me a special take home bowl every year! christmas in australia would be very different to what you guys have over there, but i love our traditions! xx

    happy christmas! xo

  173. My favorite thing to eat on Christmas is sausage bread. I make this every year for Christmas breakfast. Yum!

  174. My fav, and it’s a tradition in my family, is homemade tamales. We make pork ones and cream cheese w/ jalapenos!

This would be perfect to win since it is my anniversary. Come on Random don’t fail me now!!!!

  175. In Texas, we do beef for Christmas–usually a tenderloin. And even though you didn’t ask, we always eat tamales on New Year’s. Merry Christmas, Bakerella!!

  176. Traditional Filipino food – lumpia (spring rolls) and pancit (noodles w/ chicken).

  177. Do I have to pick a favorite? I’d say high on the list is lefsa!

  178. Homemade macaroni pie! Soooo yummy! :)

  179. Fudge. I only make fudge once a year because my fudge recipe is absolute heaven and I could eat it all day long. And I do, if it is sitting there, staring at me. Om nom nom.
