Sweet Soldiers

IMG_4878

My friend Cupcake Julie had her Christmas party this past weekend.

You may remember her gorgeous sugar-themed decorations.

IMG_4869

Stuff like this.

(Here’s the post from last year if you want to see visions of sugar plums dancing in your head for the next few days. Make sure you check out the kids play bakery, too. It’s incredible.)

It’s hard to imagine, but this year was even more beautiful than last.

IMG_4711

Colonel Cupcake was there again this year.

IMG_4838

And so was this guy.

IMG_4849

And this one.

IMG_4857

And this little one. These guys were all over the place.

You may also remember seeing them from the Toronto Book Signing Post.

Teatro Verde is the only store I’ve actually seen them sold in. It made me happy to see them on display.

Anyway, I love ’em. So festive and sweet.

As a surprise for Julie, I made a few cake pops inspired by them to bring to the party.

Wanna see?

IMG_4548

Cupcake Nutcracker guys.

She squealed. I smiled.

They’re double decker cake pops, too. Tricky and a little over the top, but I couldn’t resist.

I also made some Christmas Tree cake pops.

IMG_4592

Much easier. But instead of doing them in green, I kept them in her holiday color scheme.

I really like them like this.

Speaking of trees, Julie’s party decorations this year also included two new ones.

IMG_4832

This cheerful pink one covered in snowmen.

IMG_4791

And this whimsical upside down tree.

Amazing, huh.

IMG_4664

But that’s Julie.

IMG_4687

Here’s her dessert table. Filled with tons of treats.

IMG_4630

Cookies and candy.

IMG_4697

Cake Pops, of course.

IMG_4701

Mini cupcakes from Crumb in New York.

IMG_4650

Macarons and much, much more.

IMG_4722

Completely lovely. I wish you could have been there with me.

But since you weren’t … how about a couple of cute guys to keep you company?

IMG_4965

I just so happen to know of two that are about ten inches tall.

I thought I’d part with these to share them with one of you.

Enter for a chance to win these two sweet soldiers.

  12. Hi Bakerella,

Our favorite thing to eat on Christmas Day is Christmas Breakfast. We make the works…sausage gravy with homemade biscuits (my husband makes the best ones), cooked sausage, eggs, orange juice, eggnog, banana nut bread and you have to have sorghum for those biscuits…it is all so yummy! Oh…and on Christmas Eve my grandchildren come over and we make sugar cookies for Santa and I must say they are some of the best sugar cookies I have ever had (I got the recipe 25 years ago from a girl in Colorado). Thanks for sharing the pictures, I love your blog! Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

  14. Oh my gosh! So perfect! They would match my chef nutcracker so well!

  15. Well, we are usually so “sick” of junk food and sweets by Christmas that we love to have sausage balls or sausage pinwheels for breakfast and either a big bowl of home-made Santa Fe Chicken Chili, or pinto beans and cornbread, or maybe fancy chicken salad croissants to nibble on throughout the day. Merry Christmas! ; )

  16. My favorite is a traditional turkey dinner with stuffing and mashed potatoes and gravy, etc. But this year I am making a vegetable lasagna…. sounds good, and my daughter and her boyfriend have gone vegetarian, so it fits the bill!

  41. We traveled to Indiana this past weekend for an early Christmas with my family. My brothers and SIL made a super holiday meal…but a bit non traditional. 47. My favorite thing each year is actually on Christmas Eve. While my mom is a fabulous cook and Christmas dinner host, we have spent the last 25 years gathering after church at the homes of family friends (there are 20 of us but only 2 homes rotate). My friend’s father, Mr. Ammirati, always made empanadas (he was from Panama) and they were amazing. Two years ago, he passed away suddenly 2 weeks before Christmas. Our families still got together for a low-key night of togetherness and prayer, but his son and daughter made his empanada recipe. They weren’t as pretty but just as special and delicious. They perfected them a bit more last year and I am sure this year, they will be even better. So definitely, Mr. A’s empanadas. 179. Hmm my new favorite thing to eat at Christmas is the potato bake thing my aunty made. It has shredded potato, a few pats of butter, cream of chicken soup, sour cream and cheese all layered in a baking dish then bake until hot and melted. YUM!!!

  180. I love eating money bread on Christmas eve!

  181. Whenever my family gets together at my grandma’s, it means elaborate cheese platters of all kinds of fancy (and delicious) cheese with crackers! It’s pretty amazing.

  182. My absolute favorite part of Christmas dinner is the pickled platter. When I was a kid, my grandma always had these little platters that had baby dill pickles, black & green olives, cherry peppers, mini corn on the cob things and pearl onions. I always tried to sit right in front of one of the platters so I could get first grabs. Those platters are still my favorite!

  183. Tamales. Absolutely delish, but they have to be fresh and homemade!

These are too cute. I am moving into my own place and would love to start getting my own decorations together!

  184. Broccoli casserole and mashed potatoes with gravy!

  185. I like to have ham, it’s a family favorite.

  186. I love breakfast casserole – a make ahead mixture of bread, eggs, sausage, and cheese. You make it the night before and bake it in the morning. So yummy! This and eggnog are my favorite Christmas treats!

  187. Uh-oh…are you going to disqualify me for something sweet? The _only_ thing I can think of is what I make for Christmas breakfast and that’s a cheese bread. It’s a braided yeast bread with a cream cheese filling. That’s the only constant we have on Christmas from year to year. Everything else changes depending on where we are or who we’re with.

  188. Actually, we do a big Christmas breakfast and I know you didn’t want sweet, but I make a mean cheese danish and it is everyones favorite!! By the way, your 2nd book arrived today, I bought one for my daughter in law for Christmas and when it came I couldn’t part with it so I bought another one for her!! We are going to have so much fun!!! Thank you for your ideas and your blog is awesome!!

  193. My favorite food at christmas is fruit salad that my mother in law ,makes. Yum!!!!!!!!!!

  194. Last Christmas, we bought a rosemary Christmas tree (a small rosemary bush pruned into the shape of a tree) as a table centerpiece. We snipped off fresh branches to flavor our pot roast for Christmas dinner. Fresh herbs flavoring roast beef, potatoes, and vegetables is my new favorite Christmas meal!

  195. My birthday is on Christmas and my mother always made me a cocoa spice cake with divinity icing. It always looked so pretty for Christmas and tasted as good as it looked!!

  196. I wish my house was decorated like that,
we just bought the tree and it has 3 small decorations I made.

  197. Home made mashed potatoes. Mmmmmmmmmm

  198. My fave on Christmas (which is always the same, my mom loves her traditions) is definitely the mashed potatoes. She makes them with red potatoes, turnips and carrots. Yum :) They’re nothing fancy, but we only eat them once a year! Being French-Canadian, tourtière (a meat and potato pie) is also a favorite of mine.

  199. My favorite Christmas food is a carry over from Thanksgiving. I love pumpkin bread. I use a much handed down recipe and look forward to it every year!
