Sweet Soldiers

IMG_4878

My friend Cupcake Julie had her Christmas party this past weekend.

You may remember her gorgeous sugar-themed decorations.

IMG_4869

Stuff like this.

(Here’s the post from last year if you want to see visions of sugar plums dancing in your head for the next few days. Make sure you check out the kids play bakery, too. It’s incredible.)

It’s hard to imagine, but this year was even more beautiful than last.

IMG_4711

Colonel Cupcake was there again this year.

IMG_4838

And so was this guy.

IMG_4849

And this one.

IMG_4857

And this little one. These guys were all over the place.

You may also remember seeing them from the Toronto Book Signing Post.

Teatro Verde is the only store I’ve actually seen them sold in. It made me happy to see them on display.

Anyway, I love ’em. So festive and sweet.

As a surprise for Julie, I made a few cake pops inspired by them to bring to the party.

Wanna see?

IMG_4548

Cupcake Nutcracker guys.

She squealed. I smiled.

They’re double decker cake pops, too. Tricky and a little over the top, but I couldn’t resist.

I also made some Christmas Tree cake pops.

IMG_4592

Much easier. But instead of doing them in green, I kept them in her holiday color scheme.

I really like them like this.

Speaking of trees, Julie’s party decorations this year also included two new ones.

IMG_4832

This cheerful pink one covered in snowmen.

IMG_4791

And this whimsical upside down tree.

Amazing, huh.

IMG_4664

But that’s Julie.

IMG_4687

Here’s her dessert table. Filled with tons of treats.

IMG_4630

Cookies and candy.

IMG_4697

Cake Pops, of course.

IMG_4701

Mini cupcakes from Crumb in New York.

IMG_4650

Macarons and much, much more.

IMG_4722

Completely lovely. I wish you could have been there with me.

But since you weren’t … how about a couple of cute guys to keep you company?

IMG_4965

I just so happen to know of two that are about ten inches tall.

I thought I’d part with these to share them with one of you.

Enter for a chance to win these two sweet soldiers.

  • Simply leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite thing to eat on Christmas. Real food this time. Something non-sweet. I was on sugar overload this weekend and I need some ideas. I know you guys will have some great ones.
  • Deadline to enter is Tuesday, December 21 at 7:00 pm ET. TIME’S UP. Winner announced below.
  • One winner will be chosen at random and announced sometime Tuesday evening.

Good Luck!

And the winner is………

The runners up – a cream cheese/ italian sausage/rotel tomato dip -16 oz. cream cheese, 1 can rotel tomotoes, 1 pound browned and drained italian sausage. Combine in a warmer, stirring until cream cheese is smooth and combined well with other ingredients. Serve with a great cracker or a Frito scoop or similiar chip. Mmmmm. Merry Christmas to you. Your web page gives me a lot of enjoyment. Thanks for sharing. K

  7. Honey-Baked Ham

    BUT..

    ARTICHOKES ARE MY DESTINY!
I would write an entire book about the history, cleaning, preparation, recipes, and love of artichokes.

We have an ARTICHOKE CONTEST on Christmas for us non-seafood eaters (ME – basically!)

    Merry Merry Christmas!

  13. Love sweet potatoes without the sugar and marshmallows. Just bake and eat. So good and good for you.

  14. Every year it’s different…but usually my folks do appetizers instead of full meals. Much easier, less messy, and we all graze on the food. But one thing that I love that my mom makes often…stuffed jalapeno peppers. She stuffs them with a mixture of hot sausage and cream cheese, then sprinkled with parmesan cheese on top. MMMMMM

  15. My favorite is ham and corn casserole! Yum! These decorations are too cute!

  16. Turkey breast from the Honeybaked Ham store.

  18. Linguini with clam sauce! Don’t forget the parmesan cheese!

  23. I know that some might think it boring, but I am crazy for mashed potatoes with a nice ham gravy!

  24. It’s lasagna for us! When we make it on Christmas, we make with home made sauce and everything!

  25. There are two things…one sweet and one not. The first, I love love love to eat a cheese ball and crackers!!! All time fave! Next my parents make these candies called moldy sawhoos. They don’t sound very appetizing but they are delish! The only bad part about those is that they won’t give away their secret recipe (even to their own daughter) so I am at their mercy to make them every year.

  26. Mashed potatoes and broccoli casserole. Nothing fancy, but soooo comforting and yummy!

  27. My father-in-law’s chicken and rice. Yummy!

  28. 12 layer homemade lasagna is always a big hit for Christmas lunch! The Italian side of my family has way too much fun with mozzarella – not that I’m complaining! Happy holidays!

  29. The big Christmas breakfast my family always makes!
    Merry Christmas!

  30. Cornbread Dressing!

  31. I make Christmas breakfast every year, there are two things that we make that I look forward to: home fries, and Smitten Kitchen’s Boozy Baked French Toast. I know that last one’s not savory, but…

  47. I would like to have pizza on christmas. Im not going to have it, gotta do the whole ham thing, but oh, to order me up some gourmet veggie pizza from Round Table would be heavenly!!!

  48. We love to make Bobby Flay’s Balsamic Meatloaf with roasted vegetables. It was on a Throwdown episode (and is in his new Throwdown cookbook). Since my forte is sweets, this is a “fancy” meal for me to make. Pair it with mascarpone mashed potatoes and peas with shallots and pancetta and you have one happy family! My lime chiffon cake for dessert is perfect too. Sorry- so hard to stay away from the sweet talk :)
    Happy Holidays!

  180. sorry, i have to choose something sweet! my family’s originally from tennessee, and we have this AMAZING bourbon fruitcake recipe! Last year I didn’t get to eat any because my dogs got to it first, and coincidentally became VERY drunk on bourbon!

  181. I’m a big potatoes fan. Any kind of potatoes. But we usually end up having mashed with yummy gravy.

    I love the soldiers!

  182. Every year we have baked terriaki chicken wings. They are perfect right out of the oven and all day long from the fridge.

  183. OMG! What I wouldn’t give to go to that party! Anyway, my favorite food for Christmas is leftovers from the party we have on Christmas eve. A little shrimp, dip, vegetarian dishes, spinach artichoke dip, beer cheese dip and the list goes on…..

  184. When I was little my step mom would do a Christmas Fondue, it was pure genius, and so fun and delicious!

  185. Ummm….I actually really like the old traditional Turkey & Stuffing!

  186. I cook something different each year. This year, its going to be chicken pot pie. I never made this before, it’s my first time. I have done shredded bbq pork, vodka penne, beef stew. By the time Christmas rolls around we are all tired of Turkey and Ham.

  187. Sweet potatoes! Mmmmm!

  188. I’m from Idaho and can’t live without potatoes for the holidays. Twice baked potatoes are super delish!!!

  189. Christmas meal of Ham, Macaroni Cheese pie, Simple Salad, Ambrosia, Green Beans (maybe casserole) and Grandma Rolls.

  194. Every year we have a traditional Norwegian dinner complete with – gasp – Swedish meatballs. (The Norwegians and Swedes are like oil and water, they don’t mingle.) But, those are my favorite. It wouldn’t be Christmas without them.
