Sugar and Shirts

Who’s familiar with Threadless? Okay, not sure what I’m referring to? Well, it’s the super awesome online community where members can submit t-shirt designs and have them put to a public vote. Winning designs are printed and sold on Threadless.com and the winning designers receive cash prizes and store credit. Cool. Fun. Addictive.

But why am I telling you this?

Here’s why.

A couple of years ago, Chris Cardinal launched Threadcakes, an online cake competition where you can transform any printed Threadless t-shirt design into cake. And there are tons and tons of designs for you to choose from. Winning cake designs are chosen in two categories. 2-D and 3-D and cash and other prizes are up for grabs. So if you like sugar and shirts, this could be for you. Just bake the cake yourself and take pictures of the process. If you want to see some past examples, take a look at the pictures below. Just click on the links and you’ll see step-by-step photos for the designs on threadcakes.com. I have to say, it was really hard to pick some examples to show you, so I stuck with shirts that had a food theme. But trust me, there are tons of other great designs from super cute to cool and even a little creepy.

For more contest info visit Threadcakes.com. Deadline to enter is August 15th, 2011.

One more thing, I’m one of the judges this year and I’m beyond excited to see what amazing creations people come up with. Hope some of you enter. And WIN!!!

  1. i like the catburger the best! SO adorable!

  2. Oh my bakerella-ing gods! All of them are so cute its hard for me to choose my favorite one. Love them all!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Just found you website and flipping through the archives, you have some amazing creations :)

Making cakes from art is a great idea, some amazing cakes up there. The kicker is threadless is notorious for hosting stolen art. Go to any of the best artists on Deviantart, and chances are they have had multiple images put on shirts. The problem is threadless does not like to pull images, even if it is conclusively proven that the images are copyrighted to someone else. (go on, google the issue)

So great idea, must be a lot of fun to judge something like this, but I really wish it was hosted by someone with more scruples…

  4. I just love the Peice of Cake one…

  5. I’ve seen some of these Tees before and I love them!! The cakes look fantastic!!

  32. I love Ice Cream Cheerleading and You’ve Got Some Splaining To Do! These cakes and shirts are amazing.

  33. A Piece of Cake & Ice Cream Cheerleading! :) Love them both, the design & of course the cake :D

  34. How fun are those!?! You’ve got a tough job ahead of you! Enjoy!

  35. seriously. that last cake is just beyond words awesome. hmm… maybe I’ll throw my hat in, i have been dying to get my hands on some fondant lately.

  36. Amazing! Love every single one of them, some serious talent there.

  37. How awesome that you are a judge ! I was trying to send one in last year but didn’t have enough time. Maybe I’ll get around to one this year. And I love the Make Yourself At Home.

  38. I love them all but I believe Sugarland is my favorite!!!

  39. Sugar Land is my favorite!

They are all very cute and creative.

  40. “Cookies Love Milk” is so cute and well done. That fondant is so smooth on the Milk carton!

  41. I’m stuck between Make Yourself At Home, and CatBurger.
Make yourself at home is absolutely AMAZING in cake form – but not as cool in t-shirt form.
Catburger is awesomely squee in both tee and cake versions.

Oooo..it’s so hard to choose. I just think the make yourself at home cake maker is incredibly talented. But the kitties are so cute!

  42. I actually own both Milk shirts (Cookies love Milk & You’ve Got Some Splainin To Do). They’re super cute & the cakes are both awesome. I wish I was that talented…maybe in a few years, I’ll enter this contest. For now, I’ll just drool over all the creative artwork!

  43. Absolutely Love “You’ve Got Some Splainin To Do by Andy Wilhite”…..super cute and would get a laugh when you wear your shirt around town!!!

  44. These are SO awesome. I’ve bought tons of Threadless shirts, but I never knew about Threadcakes. SOOO cool! Thanks for opening my eyes :)

  45. They are all cute but I love the milk..”You’ve Got Some Splaining To Do”

  46. I love the “piece of cake” and the “you’ve got some splaining to do”.

  47. I’m so excited you are judging this year! Last year I did a cake based on “A Vehicle Built for Dreams” which was fun, and this year I’m doing “Captain Obvious”. I’m literally a few hours away from finishing, and I’m excited to see if people like it! :)

  48. I love threadless shirts! They crack me up! My husband & I are big fans!

  49. How adorable-love the two milks with the chocolate milk :D

  50. the turtle is by far my favorite! So much detail!

  51. Catburger and Piece of Cake are my favorites! So perfectly executed!

  52. I love Threadless and I am impressed with all of the cakes but i would have to say that Sugar Land is my favorite!

  53. This has put the biggest smile on my face! I am in such awe of their talent!!

  54. Oh what fun! I love how creative the cakes are! The “You’ve Got Some Splainin To Do” t-shirt is so funny!

I think my favorite is the “Make yourself at Home” cake (primarily for the detail and how closely they were able to match the shirt). Love those bunnies!!!

  55. Wow! Lots of great judges… I really like the Sugar Land one… So much detail recreated!

  56. They are all great! But the turtle one looks like it was very complex and has a lot of detail in it! I think that one is the best! :)

  57. I LoooOOOooOOOve the piece of cake one!

  58. The icecream cone cheerleading stunt one is my favourite :-)

  59. My husband and I are huge fans of Threadless, but I had no idea that Threadcakes existed! Thanks for telling me about it!

  60. I love Threadless, and while I definitely make and decorate cakes I’m not sure I’m up to any of these ones (though I might get my fondant smoother than couple of them, it wouldn’t make up for flaws elsewhere). I’ll have to double check the designs though, because there might be something I love enough to make (I get tshirts from there for gifts and they are lovely quality too).

  61. The one with the chocolate milk is hilarious!! I actually laughed out loud. :) I love their expressions.

  62. My husband is actually an apparel designer… he is always checking out shirts online and has lots of threadless shirts, in turn I have a bunch too! We were discussing this competition over the weekend coming up with our cake plan! I’m so excited to see how it turns out! But will say I’m a little intimidated by the pictures of the other cakes!

  63. Sugarland is definitely my favorite!

  64. Cookies Love Milk by Jess Fink is by far my favorite!

  65. The Milk Loves Cookie Shirt as given to me from my husband about 5 years ago. I had also made the characters into halloween costumes that we re-used for a couple halloween (always a hit!).

    Threadcakes are amazing!

  66. These are all amazing. The “Catburger,” “Make Yourself at Home,” and “A Piece of Cake” cakes are pieces of art. I don’t
think I could pick. Good Luck to all.

  67. What awesome talent! I am amazed by people’s creativity. Wish i had just an ounze of that i would bottle it up!

  68. I also love the Sugar Land cake. They are all wonderful, but this one looks like it replicated every detail!

  69. I love threadless and threadcakes, they’re so creative and fun to look at!

  70. Love the chocolate milk t-shirt “You’ve got some splaining to do” for a threadless idea, but as for a “threadcake” I am in love with “Make yourself at home”….can’t help it, I love bunnies. On another note, I saw yhour list of fellow judges and started cracking up because I really should be working, and my boss is named “Natalie Slater”…really!

  71. Oh fun! I’ve seen this before on cake wrecks and it looks like a fun challange. I was excited to see Mary Alice’s name up there. I have Ace of Cakes withdrawal since we cut cable a few months back. Enjoy the competition and judging!

  72. You’ve Got Some Splaining To Do. Hands down!!

  73. I’m actually thinking of entering this year! I LOVE Threadless!

  74. I think “You’ve Got Some Splaining To Do” is hilarious, but “Make Yourself At Home” is AMAZING! I can’t even believe that is cake! I am at work and can’t connect to Threadcakes (darn blockers!) but can’t wait to look when I get home! You have the neatest things on here!

  75. I saw one that looked like one of those old-school bikes with oranges for wheels on the site. But my personal favorite would have to be either the sick cloud with an IV drip of rainbow or the hungry cloud eating a spaghetti-strand of rainbow. There’s possibly a rainbow colored theme here…but regardless, these cakes are too much! way cute!

  76. Laughed at “…splainin'”, love them all. Piece of cake is my favorite.

  77. Seriously, this is so very amazing. The cakes, graphics…everything!

  78. Holy Heck!! Those are amazing! I am constantly amazed by the talented people out there. I can’t believe the detail. Crazy!

  79. oh my gosh, I love them all!! Amazing!!
I think my fav is the turtle though, wow!!!

  80. Woah! These cakes look phenomenal–and so cute!
It’s probably good for the other competitors that you’re judging and not baking! ;)

  81. OMG! I’m a little starstruck right now! I can’t believe you saw the ice cream cheerleading stunt cake, let alone liked it enough to post it! I’m so honored!!

This totally made my day. Thank you!

Judging this year is going to be sooo hard. You’re going to see some awesome stuff, but I don’t envy you ;)

    Good luck!

  82. Love the whimsy of Piece of Cake…and since my daughter is a cheerleader….the cheer stunt cake is my next fave!

  83. They are all fantastic, but the detail in Sugar Land and Make Yourself At Home is just phenomenal!

  84. I love ” A Piece of Cake” they work that went into it to get the sides to have the letters carved out is amazing. My second runner up is “you have some spanin’ to do”. There was definitely a lot of technique used in that one! I would love to be a part of this!

  85. I’ve been debating whether to attempt a cake for this competition. Knowing you’re one of the judges makes it that much more exciting!

  86. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the “Piece of Cake”!!!! But….the detail on the “Make Yourself at Home” is pretty amazing. However, the cleverness of “Piece of Cake” wins out for me!

  87. I love “you’ve got some splaining to do” OMG I almost spit out my cereal!!!

  88. I think the icecream cone cheerleaders cake is just amazing AND adorable! The details on the Make yourself at Home cake are pretty fierce. But for sheer cuteness, I’d vote for the cheerleaders or the milk & cookies :)

  89. This is such an awesome idea!

  90. Wow, how fun!!! Those cakes are amazing :)

  91. Im in awe! I am beyond impressed by the skills those bakers have, i mean the designs are replicated so perfectly its incredible! Such talent and a wonderful competition, im gonna go check it out indeed :)

  92. Thanks for showing those fabulous cakes and shirts the milk and cookie one is my favourite

  93. Lol @ catburger!! Well, those are some mighty fine cakes, waaaay outta my range. Have a blast judging them!

  94. love the Piece of Cake. They are all wonderful!

  95. make yourself at home-hands down! the level of detail required was well executed!

  96. I like Make Yourself at Home. I love the turtle’s face and his legs remind me of my daughter’s legs when she was in her “chunky baby” phase!

  97. I think “Make yourself at home” is probably the best cake design! For tshirts though, you’ve got some splaining to do is the funniest.

  98. Piece of cake!!! So clever but they were all executed very well!

  99. I love the ‘You Got Some Spalinin To Do’ T-Shirt. And my favorite cake was ‘Make Yourself At Home’ cake.

  100. This totally just made my day! I love Threadless, I own way too many t-shirts and I’ve always loved their original designs. The cakes are just way too cute, I’d have trouble picking a winner. Best of luck!

  101. I entered my first threadcakes entry this year! Hopefully will do another one before the deadline hits. I found it off of your blog last year but was unable to do an entry due to an internship.

  102. “Cookie loves milk” is so cute but “Make yourself at home” is the most artistic! :) Cool cakes! Love them all!

  103. I’m with Vanessa…it’s a toss up between the catburger and the piece of cake…they are all spectacular and I would totally wear ANY one of those shirts!

  104. Oh my, those are amazing! The details on Sugar Land are very impressive!! I can’t believe it’s a cake!

  105. The chocolate milk one makes me giggle haha
but im torn between the “piece of cake” and the cat burger. :)

  106. wow… these cakes are so detailed… this is sure a really nice challenge. Yayy to you for being one of the Judges. :) so excited.

    Catarina

  107. I love “You’ve got some splaning to do!” it kind of reminded me of an episode of Maury, lol. Hooray for cakes with humor!

  108. I LOVE the catburger!! Very clever, all of them!

  109. The turtle one is amazing! By far my favorite.

  110. My husband and I agree…Sugar Land by Kim Rountree!!

  111. I LOVE Threadless! I literally only wear Threadless shirts. Unfortunately, I’m a terrible baker, which is why I come here – to live vicariously through your blog!
Someday, I’ll give it a shot! Maybe.
    :D
