Joy with friends and Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream

Wendy, Bridget and Amy

I was in Columbus, Ohio last weekend visiting with some sweet friends that I’ve met through blogging… Wendy of Wenderly, Bridget of Bake at 350, and Amy of She Wears Many Hats. Hi guys! I mean girls.

Wendy lives in Ohio and invited us to spend a few days at her cabin in the woods. Has anyone seen that movie? And yes, I totally spent the weekend suggesting scary movie situations to them. What if this – and what if that. But mostly scaring myself. I definitely watch way too many SyFy Sunday movies. If you watch that channel, you know the ones I mean.

Anyway, we kicked off our fun cabining weekend with a straight from the airport pitstop for lunch and then Jeni’s ice cream. Yay!

Jeni's Ice Cream

Jeni’s is based in Ohio and I’ve been wanting to visit one of her scoop shops for some time now.

Jeni's Signature Flavors

She has some incredible flavors. Or should I say splendid.

Yogurt

And yogurt too.

I love all the chalk writing and window words. So cute.

Jeni's Ice Cream

The inside of the store is perfect with the ceiling strung in little lights and paper garland.

Jeni's Ice Cream

You can buy ice cream by the scoop and by the pint. Whoohoo!

So many flavors. Signature and seasonal ones too.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Like this one for flu season. Influenza sorbet.

Soothing for the sickly. Made with cayenne pepper, ginger, bourbon, honey, orange and lemon juices.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Handwritten! Love it and love how the same flavors are written by different people. What a fun way to add that personal touch.

And now I have a strange desire get a job handwriting ice cream labels. I wonder if I could add hearts and smiley faces.

By the way, if you’re in Ohio, stop what you are doing right now and run and get some of that Maple Walnut ice cream. It’s fantastic. I think that container on the top right is actually mocking me right now with all of its maple amazingness. I even tried to order some more today online, but that flavor is seasonal and isn’t shipping. Wipes tear. So get it in stores while you can.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Sweet friends, ice cream and a great start to our winter weekend away.

You know what, you can also make your own Jeni’s ice cream. Check out her book: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home.
Jeni's Ice Cream

The staff at Jeni’s was great. Super patient. They didn’t even mind the 571 samples we asked for. But I think that’s pretty smart of them, because then we ended up ordering 571 scoops to enjoy. You know … just to be absolutely sure they were good. : )

Jeni's Ice Cream

Okay not really 571 scoops, but several. Here’s a few of the flavors we all sampled.

Eaten

Enjoyed and instagrammed. It’s a mandatory food blogging thing … to share when something is so so good.

Jeni's Ice Cream

My favorites right now: Dark Chocolate (of course) and that Maple Walnut. Goodness. Very goodness!

Amy, Wendy & Bridget

While we were laughing and sampling, we had a fun surprise. Jeni stopped in the location we were at. With several stores, we certainly weren’t expecting that. Wendy had met her before so she introduced us.

Me and Jeni

Hi Jeni! Your ice cream makes my tummy happy.

Jeni's Ice Cream

Such a great smile. It’s nice to see when people are doing something they love.

Visit Jeni’s Ice Cream for online ordering, scoop shop locations and where to buy by the pint in other states.

  1. I’m a sorbet kind of girl, but my husband is all about chocolate ice cream—any version, as long as it has chocolate somewhere. Hence, we always have a variety of delectables in the freezer!

  2. All of the above. I love any frozen treat!

  3. I am a huge ice cream fan – hot fudge, bananas and nuts is my go-to. Plus, I don’t need to feel that guilty – since fruit is included! :)

  4. Ice cream for sure! Jeni’s Salted Caramel. Yum!

  5. I hate to say it but I’m a sucker for all 3! I always have one of these 3 in the freezer at all times! I’m a frozen dessert addict!

  6. All about ice cream!

  7. 1) ice cream
    2) ice cream chocolate chip cookie sandwiches!

  8. All about ICE CREAM! I’m from Ohio and had not heard of Jeni’s before. (To be fair, I am in southwestern Ohio) My best friend lives in Dublin though, so we are definitely going to have to check it out!

  9. Oh yum! All cold sweets have a special spot in my heart :D

  10. Oh goodness…so hard to choose! I love all the frozen treats. If I had to pick, it would be ice cream…and trying to narrow it down to a favorite is just impossible! So many delicious choices!

  11. Ice cream for sure. Especially a vanilla biscoff heath bar that I made last summer.

  12. Um… can I say yes to all three? Chocolate chip mint ice cream is a sentimental favorite since that is always what I chose when my family went out together for ice cream cones.

  13. I love them all! My favorite Jeni’s flavor is Queen City Cayenne. I’m generally not a chocolate ice cream fan but I can’t get enough of that spicy chocolate.

I’ve already made half these flavors from her cookbook….and all were divine.

  18. I have Jeni’s cookbook. It sits in a place of honor next to my Ben & Jerry’s cookbook and The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz. For my ice cream party last year, I made a meringue topped roasted peach ice cream pie inspired by her recipes, salted caramel and something else I am forgetting at the moment, so please, oh please, count me in!

  19. Ice cream! I’ll eat sorbet and froyo when I’m watching my waistline, but ice cream is soooooo good.

  20. Definintely ice cream! But my husband and I were just in Italy and I love gelato as well! My favorite ice cream would have to be chocolate with peanut butter and peanut butter cups added in! Yum!

  21. Fro-yo is the way to go!

  27. Well, I’m all about ice cream, yogurt, and sorbet (in that order). Frozen custard isn’t a bad thing, either. By the way, thanks for the long-ago post about the Cowgirl Cookies. They made FANTASTIC Christmas presents for my friends!!

  28. Chocolate Mint Chip Ice Cream and I really love Frozen Peppermint Patties!

  29. I love it all! But right now I could go for cookie dough with chocolate jimmies on a sugar cone =)

  30. Her shop and the handwritten labels are so fun! I would love to win this! Ice cream is so near and dear to my heart, but I can’t get enough of frozen yogurt, especially when I can add a million different toppings! My favorite frozen treat is anything with chocolate and peanut butter!

  34. All about the sorbet…however my family LOVES ice-cream!
    Looks creamy and yummy.

  35. I am 100% obsessed with ice cream, I can have it any time of day and will never ever tire of it. Any variation of mint chocolate chip is my weakness.

  49. I’m generally not too big a fan of frozen treats in general, as I have sensitive teeth, but when it comes to Jeni’s… sorbet all the way!!! That Pear Riesling is just to.die.for. I had it once when I went to OH to visit family, and now I am trying to resist ordering it online!!! Oh goodness, the temptation!!

  50. I am all about ice-cream! (though I won’t say no when offered sorbet or frozen yogurt either) My hands down favorite, at the moment anyway, is Jeni’s Goat cheese and dark cherries! 57. Ice cream all the way. It should be its own food group!

  58. Holy cow do we love ice cream!! i’m not kidding to say that we might get 4 or 5 bowls out of a 1/2 gallon. Hubbys fav is butter pecan, i lean towards minty stuff. Edys peppermint chip at the holidays is a good one. Youngest loves plain chocolate. Fingers crossed cause that would be an awesome prize.

  59. I was lucky to be able to go to Columbus and try Jeni’s. The staff was SO nice and let me sample as many ice cream flavors I wanted!

All of the options in your question are good, but I have to admit I am partial to ice cream ;)

  62. I’m all about the frozen yogurt! There are a bunch or self-serve style shops popping-up all over, and I can’t help but visit every one that I see. :)
No sugar added raspberry cheesecake sprinkled with granola and fruit = perfection!

  63. I love all ice cream! Doesn’t matter if it is in a bowl, a cone, or served on top of pie. Don’t know where I would put 17 pints of ice cream, but I could make room!

  71. Yummmmmmm!
I love ice cream….though have been eating more froyo lately. Thanks for the giveaway!

  72. I’m all about the ice-cream and everything you can mix into it! :) Although ask me again in the summertime and i might change my tune for fresh and fruity sorbet! But all told I’m a Dark Chocolate Raspberry ice cream kinda gal! ;) Here’s to hoping I win!

  73. I love anything chocolate. Especially chocolate. It is so creamy and the flavor intense.

  74. I actually prefer ice cream to fro yo or sorbet, but with Jeni’s flavors, all bets are off! That Cherry Lambic sorbet is wonderful

Since we live so far away from her shops, I’ve ordered several times from her website. I know from this that at least 5 pints will fit in the kitchen fridge, and even more will cram into the laundry room one… Every pint I order gets devoured because Jeni’s is sooo yummy!

  75. I love any type of frozen treat, really, but my favorite is really ice cream. Love, love, love ice cream. Right now, I’m rocking anything salted caramel (when I eat it – I’ve been dieting and recently lost 30 lbs – so I don’t eat frozen treats as often as I’d like anymore).

I will have to try Jeni’s next time I’m in Columbus (I’m only about an hour and 15 minutes from there).

  76. While I love ice cream, lately I’ve been addicted to peanut butter frozen yogurt with raspberries and crushed graham cracker and a drizzle of dark chocolate syrup. So good!

  77. OMGoodness! Ice, Cream, Ice Cream, Ice Cream! I love it, yogurt is ok sometimes, but the real stuff is the best, and my favorite iw the swan’s chocolate marshmellow, or here in the Twin Citeis there is Sabastian Joes Oreo that is so yummy!

  78. MmmMmmmmm….icecream! Any flavor, I’m not picky!

  79. I’m definitely all about ice cream. But, really I love the homemade sugar cones.

  80. ICE CREAM. We’ve a small ice cream place next town over that I can never make up my mind, and two further away that are right at the dairy. YUMMMMM.

  81. Ice cream is definitely my favorite! I love any kind, especially chocolate full of marshmallow and nuts.

  82. Homemade french vanilla Ice cream over hot peach cobbler… but I may have to rethink that with all of Jeni’s amazing flavor combinations!! Yummy!!!!!!

  86. I’ve never had it before…sounds phenomenal – a must try!
I really love sorbet-fruity flavors. Influenza sorbet made me laugh-I think I’d want to try that one for sure. Dark chocolate ice cream with maybe some peanut butter thrown in…yeah, that’s the stuff! :)

  87. Ice cream all the way!!! Even when it’s ZERO degrees, as it is in NH today, it doesn’t matter! Nothing else will do! Maybe just a little home made salted caramel sauce to warm things up!

  88. “Are you all about ice cream, serious for sorbet, or full on frozen yogurt? What’s your favorite frozen treat?”

But I'm an ice cream gal :D

  109. ICE CREAM!!! Yum.

  110. I’ve been craving some delicious ice cream. Hope I win!

  111. I don’t discriminate when it comes to frozen treats, so I enjoy all 3 of them! But if I HAD to choose, I’d go with real, full-on icecream! Its decadent but oh so worth it and I always am fully satisfied with a smaller portion than with fro-yo or sorbet. And BTW these icecreams look to-die for! Even though its zero degrees outside this post has me drooling over here!

  112. Thanks for the review AND the giveaway! I have Jeni’s book, and have tried several of her recipes….and they work. I love her technique which is unusual. My favorite frozen treat is ice cream, and my current favorite flavor is Salty Caramel.

  126. I am a chocolate ice cream lover through and through. However a couple of years ago I got turned on to gelato and it’s been running a close second ever since. Chocolate and salted caramel gelato is so, so good.

  127. Def froyo! I love all of these self serve froyo places! It’s delicious and a great place to hang out! I must say a great frozen treat I haven’t had in quite a while is a frozen charleston chew candy bar! I have quite the sweet tooth! ;) thanks for giveaway!

  148. Ice cream or gelato! This looks amazing!

  149. This is a tough question, Bakerella! But… I guess I’d have to say… I’m an ice-cream girl. Love sorbets & fro-yo’s, but there’s nothing quite like a bowl of ice-cream ;-). I’ve never tried Jeni’s but the pics you took look delish! My current fave is Haagen Dazs’s Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. I also like Stonyfield’s Cookies’n Cream… anything with cookie bits in it is nearly a guaranteed hit with me :-P I’d love to try Jeni’s- thanks for hosting such a fab giveaway!!!

  150. Ice cream all the way! a hot fudge sundae always makes my day

  151. I love ice cream! Just got an ice cream maker for Christmas so I’m looking into Jeni’s book!! thanks.

  152. Ice cream, all the way. Sorbet is good for a distraction, but it always comes back to ice cream! Coffee is my usual flavor pick, but I like the adventurous flavors, too.

  153. I am sooo serious for sorbet! I love fresh blackberry sorbet or raspberry sorbet…although I love lemon sorbet…or any other sorbet! I hope to win. I would love to sample Jeni’s creations! What a treat that would be. Thanks Bakerella.

  154. Ice Cream is definitely my favorite. My favorite kind is Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla. But I really have a weakness for all things ice cream :)

  155. I used to really love ice cream, but lately I’m very much into sorbet, especially since my husband is lactose intolerant; it makes it easier for us to share dessert together! And I’m pretty sure I’ll make room for 17 pints in my freezer! :)

  156. I love ice cream….anything with caramel or peanut butter in it is divine. Sorbet is not my favorite but I do also love yogurt.

  157. I don’t discriminate…any flavor works for me, as well as my 8-year-old! Bring it on!

  158. I’m a big frozen yogurt fan – and the chocolatier, the better!

  159. Definitely love me some ice cream. My absolute favorite is toasted almond candied cherry chocolate chunk ice cream. Yum!

  160. Ice cream! Butter pecan!!

  161. Honestly I love it all…it really just depends on what is on hand. My favorite flavor is CHOCOLATE!!!

  162. I love all three! But my favorite ice cream flavors are moose tracks, peppermint, and mint chocolate chip. My favorite sorbet flavor is just plain strawberry. And we have a great frozen yogurt place called Toppers here in Toledo, Ohio called Toppers that changes the flavors every week but I LOVE their toasted marshmallow!

  163. My favorite is ice cream – and I have been totally won over by Jeni’s goat cheese and cherry flavor, in spite of my initial skepticism :)

  164. Love ice cream and these sound and look amazing!

  165. Ice cream all the way!! But I’d never turn down any treat…

  167. I have been seriously obsessed with ice cream lately, even though It seems crazy to want ice cream when it’s below 20 degrees out.

  168. Never tried Jeni’s ice cream but it looks yummy!

  169. I flip for any sort of frozen treat. However, my favorite is one from Frugo’s Yogurt which is a frozen yogurt shop down here in Southern California. They have a sorbet called Hawaiian Delight and it is to die for. Although I could see one of Jeni’s ice creams quickly becoming one of my favorites too.

  170. Im totally an ice cream girl! I don’t care if its negtive degrees I outside nothing makes my insides happier then some ice cream and Jenis unique flavors sure would make me smile inside out :)

  171. Ice cream! yes!!! I love chocolate and peanut butter, but I am a sucker for frozen Yogurt too! Can’t we have it all? :)

  172. All about ice cream!… or gelato, if I’m being honest.

  173. If I had to pick between the 3, I’d definitely say ice cream! However, my faaaavorite frozen delight has to be frozen custard. So rich and creamy and wonderful. Or gelato. Or granita. Or frozen banana’s pureed into ice cream. I can’t decide!!

  174. I grew up on Jeni’s! Jeni’s is from my hometown and I used to go there every weekend to the North Market.

And I am all about ice cream. It’s a toss up between salty caramel and wildberry lavender. Although, the dark chocolate Zinn from Izzy’s (Minneapolis) is a close second. God I love ice cream.

  175. I absolutely looooooove ice cream.. as a child I used to sit on the front porch of our apartment and eat it during the cold winter! :) … But I also love the frozen yogurt you can serve yourself and pile on the toppings. Sure, I always get more then I should..but I also enjoy every last drop! My favorite is a mix of dulce de leche and maybe coffee flavored yogurt, topped with granola, sliced almonds and finished off with fresh strawberries. I always get the same toppings.. because if it aint broken, don’t fix it! And my tummy appreciates that. Thanks for all you do.. I visit your blog for inspiration! God bless you!

  176. What a great giveaway! I love soft-serve frozen yogurt, or gelato! But these flavors look amazing enough to convert me to ice cream. :)

  177. Frozen yogurt is for me! Chocolate of course!

  178. Oh my gosh…I am drooling! Ice cream is my favorite dessert…preferably peanut butter! I live in Ohio and will be checking out Jeni’s ice cream on my next trip to Columbus.

  179. Such a hard question! I chose from Jeni’s based on the flavors, not so much whether it is ice cream, sorbet or frozen yogurt. Right now I’m enjoying the maple walnut ice cream…funny that no one else in the house knows about it, right? I am looking forward to the lavender ice cream to share with a friend who will appreciate an unusual flavor.

  180. My family loves, loves, loves ice cream.

  181. All about Ice Cream! Cookie dough is my fav!

  182. I LOVE Ice Cream! It should be a food group! Jeni’s is amazing. I’m always trying a different flavor of hers. I enjoy making my own sometimes too. I always enjoy a good cookie dough ice cream or salted caramel.

  183. I love rocky road ice cream!!!!

  184. I LOVE both ice cream and frozen yogurt, don’t know if I have a favorite (would be like picking a favorite child, depends on the day :-) My favorite flavor changes too.

  185. I am all about the ice cream all year long! Especially while being 18 weeks pregnant! We have a small, local ice cream shop nearby and my hubby gets sent out a couple of times a week to satisfy my cravings for ice cream. Thanks for the giveaway! :)

  186. I love ice cream! I have been wanting to try Jeni’s for some time after reading about how yummy it is. It’s hard to pick a flavor! I like anything with cookie dough or peanut butter! Vanilla base…and I am from New Orleans so creole cream cheese ice cream is pretty wonderful, too! I don’t have any ice cream in the freezer at this point…so I’d love to have 17 pints, ha!

  187. Ice Cream for sure! Even though it’s been in the single digits in Utah! Especially anything chessecakey! YUM!

  188. I love ice cream, midwest “custard” ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet!!! Its very hard to pick one, but if I had to…banana nut flavored frozen yogurt…mmmmm

  189. I SCREAM for ICE CREAM! Rich, creamy and dreamy. I love, love all and any that contain chocolate or fudge. And even when it’s -44 degrees here in the north, it’s still ice cream weather :)

  190. Ice Cream! I live in Texas, so we have Blue Bell :)

  191. Ice cream! Definitely!! And my favorite is mint chocolate chip! :)

  192. I LOVE sorbets!!! They are so delicious :) Especially lemon and pomegranate!

  193. Ice cream for sure!!

  194. All about ice cream!!

  195. 1. All three! I like to mix it up :)

    2. I’d have to say vanilla ice cream with pear and homemade chocolate sauce. yum

  196. I have a feeling that if I got to try the Goat Cheese with Cherries, THAT would be my favorite frozen treat! YUM.

  197. I lived in columbus for 2 years and never had Jeni’s!! I need to make it back down there! I love ice cream!! I play it safe with chocolate chip cookie dough with chocolate ice cream
