I was in Las Vegas over the Fourth of July and received the sweetest surprise!
Cupcakes!!! And lots of them.
They were from Kari and Brian of Retro Bakery. I “met” Kari through flickr when she was documenting her adventures in opening a bakery and I’ve been keeping up with her on Twitter, knowing that the next time I visited Las Vegas, I wanted to rent a car and surprise her at the bakery.
Fun! Fun! Fun! I’ve only been to a few cupcake bakeries. Sprinkles Cupcakes in Dallas and The Atlanta Cupcake Factory in Georgia. I know. There’s something enormously wrong with that picture. So I was really excited to see Retro and check out their cupcakes.
Big problem. Right before I left, she announced they were going to be closed on the day I could come visit. On vacation of all things. Just my luck. Needless to say, I was bummed.
But, Kari did the sweetest thing. She sent some to the hotel for me the last day they were open. The Fourth of July. I couldn’t believe it. I mean I’ve certainly never had cupcakes delivered to my room before. The bellman brought them up and for a minute I thought I was going to have to fight the guy for them. Even after I tipped him, he kept going on about them. I guess he wanted me to give him one. Well, that didn’t happen. Sorry Mr. Bellman. These were all staying with me!
Can you blame me. I mean look at them. They tasted just as good as they look. And really moist too.
In the back is Pink Lemonade (Lemon cake topped with pink lemonade buttercream and hot pink glitter sugar). In the front: Hop Scotch (Vanilla cake topped with vanilla buttercream dipped in butterscotch ganache) This was one of my favorites!
Here we have Cinnamon Toast (Vanilla cake topped with cinnamon buttercream dusted with cinnamon and sugar). YUM!
And here… Milk & Cookies (Chocolate-chip cake topped with vanilla buttercream and a freshly baked mini chocolate chip cookie.) This is all wrong and all right, all at the same time. Another fave!
Left: Apple Cider (Cinnamon swirl cake topped with apple cider buttercream dusted with cinnamon and sugar) Front: Mint Chocolate Chip (Chocolate cake topped with green mint buttercream and mini chocolate chips) Right: Red, White & Blueberry (Blueberry cake topped with strawberry buttercream) This might have been my most fave. But it’s a toss up with the Hopscotch.
Oh and, sorry about the lighting on some of these pics. The room didn’t have the best angle for natural light.
But who cares about lighting when you have this much chocolate to look at. Left: Chocolate Fountain (Chocolate cake topped with chocolate buttercream and dipped in chocolate ganache). Right: Chocolate Covered Banana (Chocolate cake topped with banana buttercream dipped in chocolate ganache and sprinkled with walnuts) Back: Peanut Butter Cup (Chocolate cake topped with peanut butter buttercream and dark chocolate shavings) Who am I kidding… these were all faves.
But I didn’t actually eat them then.
I left them all alone in the room while we went to get dinner. It was difficult, but I knew if I tasted even one, it would be all over. By the way, if you’ve been to Vegas, you can probably guess where I stayed by now.
And, later when we returned.
Let’s just say there was a little cupcake carnage during the taste testing. I won’t give you all the messy details, but I’m glad there wasn’t a camera filming me.
And the best thing about these cupcakes, was having the rest of them again for breakfast.
Thanks so much for the Retro cupcakes, Kari & Brian. I hope to really meet you guys next time.
Do you have a cupcake bakery in your area that you want to try? One that you love or one that you’ve just heard of? I would love to hear your recommendations.
Dots in Pasadena is AMAZING!!!! They have a strawberry lemonaide that is to die for. Wow…
The only cupcakery I know of in Green Bay is Bouchee- I love their cupcakes! …but that might be because I make them :)
If you're ever in Savannah, GA, check out the Cupcake Emporium downtown. They have the best in town!
Holy cow. LOOK AT THESE CUPCAKES! I haven't been to a lot of cupcakeries here either, but there's a small local one in Long Beach "Miss Priss Cupcakes" that have simple flavors but are really great.
Yum! Was in Madison (WI) the other day and saw a place called Daisy Cafe and Cupcakery. Didn't have time to stop, but wonder if anyone's been there and if it's worth my time?
I live in Charlotte, NC and love going to Polka Dot Bakeshop. Their Tuxedo cupcake is amazing!
I'll put another plug in for The Cupcake Cottage in Fort Worth, TX. The cupcakes are DELICIOUS, made from all-natural ingredients, and the owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Check out their website at http://www.thecupcakecottage.com
The best thing about this shop…they bake regular size cupcakes as well as a mini 'babycake' which allows you to sample several different flavors at one sitting!
ohhhh my gosh! the butterscotch ganache looks amazing.
check out this great cupcake shop in the Denver Highland Neighborhood.
http://happycakesdenver.com/
I live 30 minutes from the Sprinkles in Dallas, but when my husband and I were in Los Angeles, we went to a place called Crumbs that was just a few doors down from Sprinkles. We decided their cupcakes were better than Sprinkles.
I live in Knoxville, TN and LOVE Magpies, http://www.mag-pies.com! They have the best cupcakes around…
My favorite here in Portland, Oregon is Cupcake Jones.
http://www.cupcakejones.net/
Every month they change their cupcakes to reflect what is available at the farmer's market. They use locally grown product and of course, they have their daily regulars: White and Chocolate. I think they are just two years old and getting better and better!
OMG! I would never have left those cupcakes alone… did you see what happened to them while you were gone? Looks like someone had a food fight with them. I'll bet the bellman snuck back in there and did all that damage. Couldn't have been YOU, could it? Nooooooo….
Oh, no cupcake bakeries in Austin, except that one in the trailer Hey Cupcake, which is pretty tasty.
molly's bakery in chicago is amazing. the cake is moist, the buttercreams are very flavorful, and the bakery has a lot of "filled" cupcakes with things like mousse inside. i prefer cupcakes with a lot going on, so i think i'd like retro too!
read the menu and be prepared to salivate! http://www.mollyscupcakes.com/
Yum! My mouth is watering! Can you tell me: was the hopscotch cupcake dipped entirely in butterscotch ganache, paper baking cup and all? It appears that way in the photo. (Or just the top?) Just wondering…
so i'm blurffin' (thats blog surfin' if you didn't know) and my 7 yr old little man is sittin' w/ me and I clicked on your blog and he says "OOohhh, the baking lady, I LOVE the baking lady"!! Soooo cute!!
squirrellyshirley@gmail.com
i definitely would have wanted one of those if i was the bell man.
MAN, I'm hungry for cupcakes now!!! I'll have to try that one you said in Atlanta. A 2hr drive for cupcakes is worth it, dontcha think??
lemonade buttercream???? I'm dying. That sounds amazing…..
Wow, they look soooooo yummy and what amazing flavors! I am glad you shared them with us, since what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas! LOL
In New Braunfels Texas we have Naegelins Bakery. The oldest bakery in Texas. http://www.naegelins.com/
Ymmy bread, cakes, and really good gingerbread men!
Those look so yummy!
I live in Albuquerque NM and there is a place called Cake Fetish here and they're soooo good. I can't even pick my fav, they have so many but the two I always get are Half Baked-Chocolate Chip Vanilla Cake, Vanilla Buttercream and a cookie dough center
Amore-Chocolate Cake with Strawberry filling dipped in dark chocolate with a vanila swirl
YUM!
http://www.cakefetish.com
Ruth Norton
Yum! Yum! It's so hard to find a decent "buttercream" where I live…
I just wanted you to know that the Mint Chocolate Chip Cupcake caught my attention. My Dad, who passed away a year ago at 87, ate anything mint chocolate chip. He would have LOVED these!
Katina
OHMYGOSH THOSE CUPCAKES ARE DEFINITELY THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN !! thy r so special XD
http://www.jetblackdye.blogspot.com
PS. i still dont know how YOU look like!!!
Society Bakery in Dallas is my favorite place for cupcakes. You can't go wrong with their cinnamon roles either. I love their cakes, bus usually don't need something so big. The strawberry cupcake is my most favorite.
Just found your blog..my goodness. I love it. Now I want to make either those cheesecake balls or cake balls. Thanks for sharing how to on your cakes and things. Sally
Georgetown Cupcake in Washington DC is to die for – they have tons of great flavors, but I have to say Vanilla Vanilla is my fav – but for you, Bakerella, you would like Chocolate Cubed (choc cupcake, choc buttercream w/chocolate shavings) YUM YUM!
When you visit Pittsburgh (home of the Steelers and Penguins!!), try DOZEN BAKE SHOP. The cupcakes are outstanding and they're opening a shop in downtown soon. YUM!
wow! they are gorgeous !!!!!!!!!
Oh those look amazing!!!! I could like the computer screen!
Oh YUM!! Why do I open your beautiful blog when I'm hungry?? They look delightful and even more so with your amazing photography:)) Vanessa xx
WOW, simply wow. I don't know what I would've done with myself if I received such a scrumptious package!
I love the Hummingbird bakery in London, especially the red velvet cupcakes.
I'm off to Vegas next year and I'll be sure to try the Retro Bakery- they look delicious.
oh that was just s u c h a good vicarious through Bakerella cupcakathon! hey! let's do that again – another round here, Retro!
I live in Las Vegas, and these are the best. I have tried some of the others, no names mentioned, but RETRO is the best. I have also tired some fabulous ones in St. George Utah in a little bakery/cafe called 25 Main. AWESOME!!!!
Cupcake (Cup as in Cup of coffee) on University Ave in Minneapolis is amazing. Nothing quite as interesting looking as the LV cupcakes, but still some pretty darn amazing tasting cupcakes. I had a Mint Chocolate Chip cupcake there that was amazing!
I live here in Vegas and have totally been wanting to try these! Yay that you got to and you motivated me to head out and grab some! Thanks for the delicious post!
How very sweeeet of them…quite literally! I bet there are some awesome places around seattle for cupcakes…but bringing my boys anywhere near them would be a BIG mistake…we'll just leave the awesomeness to the pro's and bake some here…
Retro Bakery is my local cupcake hotspot. I knew it was them just by looking at the cupcakes. I got a box of them the day before you got yours. I love them. Red, white and blueberry is my new fave. (Glazed donut just got edged out as fave with this current flavor of the month.) I am so excited to see them on your blog. They are an amazing bakery!!!
I live in Vancouver BC, Canada and theres an AWESOME bakery called… CUPCAKES of all things! Haha
Making me hungry just looking at them. They're beautiful! Wish I could hop a flight to Retro right now! Thanks for sharing.
We were in Franklin, TN (just outside Nashville) over the 4th and visited Ivey Cake and had the best Red Velvet and Carrot Cupcakes ever! It was a teeny tiny shop but had some yummy stuff. Here is the web site http://www.iveycake.com/index2.html
OMG the flavors are out of this world! Now there's another place I'll have to add to my list of things I want to do in Vegas. Thanks Bakerella.
Regards,
Michelle
Georgetown Cupcake in D.C. is amazing, definitely my favorite cupcakes by far!
Main Street Cupcakes in Hudson, Ohio is amazing. I've had there cupcakes a few times, but this past weekend they did the "cake" for my friends' wedding. Aaaaamazing. If you ever happen to be in Ohio, check them out.
Cupcake Royale, in the Ballard area in Seattle is great! It's two in one it's located with a coffee house called Cafe Veritas. The website is: http://www.cupcakeroyale.com – It's great! They even have merchandise – one of their shirts says "legalize frostitution". A bit risque, but funny :)
There's also one in Fort Collins, CO that I want to try – called "Take the Cake" – going there this week while visiting!
Cake Love in D.C. cannot be beat! I know Warren Brown is pretty well-known by now due to his brief stint on Food Network, but truly, his cupcakes, and ESPECIALLY his icing, are incredible. Beyond words. And I love that he's such a purist– even in the little mall-stall Cake Love in Tyson's Corner, Virginia, there's a sign on the wall that reads, "nothing is fat free." Gotta love it.
In Jacksonville, FL we have Vanilla's Cupcakery (and if you're familiar with Jacksonville it's in the Avondale area.) My favorites are the Creme Brule and Strawberry Cheesecake.
http://www.vanillascupcakery.com/
Unfortunately for my diet it's within walking distance of my apartment. Walking to the cupcake shop counts as exercise, right? :)
I love your blog! i live about 45 minutes north of atlanta and will have to check out the bakery you mentioned. i make a caramel apple cookie that i am trying to figure out how to make into a cupcake.
Ok I all wanna know where you stayed!!!
Seriously those look awesome, I live in Henderson and have been to the cupcakery here, wasn't impressed maybe I should make the drive over there.
Oh and really I can't guess where you stayed, please let me in on the secret.
That chocolate chip cookie one would be my best friend! Oh how I love a good cupcake!
There is the BEST cupcake shoppe in Houston, TX called Sugarbaby's! Check them out at http://www.ilovesugarbabys.com.
And trust me…the decor is almost as yummy as the cupcakes! :)
The flavors seem great, but… honestly? The frosting looks like little turds. It looks like someone took a nice, neat and tidy poo on the cupcakes.
Eww.
Especially the brown one.
*shivers* Ick.
someone else posted a comment about our town knoxville, tn but we have three wonderful cupcake bakeries, instead of two! Magpies (best icing i've ever had) The Cupcakery (big and luscious) and Cities Cupcakes (interesting flavors)
If you're ever in San Francisco, there's a couple I'm pretty fond of. My favorite is Kara's Cupcakes in Ghirardelli Square, but they're huge so be prepared to have to eat them in more than one sitting.
Also, when you're in Ghirardelli Square, there's free chocolate to be had. So really, what's not to like!?
lol
Those look absolutely amazing. I just ate dinner and then a half pint of Haagen-Dazs Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream and my mouth is still watering looking at those and reading all the awesome flavors. Especially the ones with the ganache….
Oh, I REALLY want to make cupcakes right now!
We do have a cupcake bakery in the unnamed city we live near but I wasn't thrilled with their cupcakes, so I'm not giving any details. Too ordinary and tasted the same as the grocery store. Not bad or anything, just not what I expected from a cupcake-only bakery.
I sure wish we had a Retro!!!
Wow, you are so lucky! Those look amazing!
If you're ever in SF, try That Takes the Cake. I think it's waaay better than Kara's. :) The chocolate with raspberry buttercream is the best cupcake I've ever had in my life!
AUSTIN: Hey Cupcake! The best – Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing!….so moist and delish. My husband likes the Double Dose – chocolate with chocolate. You can get any cupcake with a shot of whipped cream inserted in the middle for free! They have 3 locations….YUMMMMMM
Georgetown Cupcake in Washington DC is my favorite.
The story about the bellman is hilarious! If I were him, I would have fought you for them. Well, maybe not, but i would have sprained my ankle in your room somehow to make you feel sorry for me. Then maybe you would have given me one while waiting for help to come. Or maybe not… Ha ha!
OMG those look divine!! and they sound even better!! :)
I was just in Santa Barbara this past week and wanted so badly to get over to Crush Cupcake on Anacapa St. We even drove by (but they were closed early) The store is just at the bottom of the hill where we stay, but it was a crazy time for us visiting family…I almost cried when I realized we wouldn't get to go there! :(
Locally I have a few places to hit: New York Cupcake, Trophy Cupcake, and Cupcake Royale…all are delicioso!
A cookie whoopie pie cupcake! I've died and gone to heaven! These are adorable.
here in orlando, fl we have sweets! by good golly miss holly. the cupcakes are as great as the name!
I second Trophy cupcakes in Seattle, but my first choice would, of course be my own kitchen :). You have an open invitation to come visit and have some of my cupcakes anytime :).
I live near Austin. I will have to check out that new place Delish that Sarah mentioned. I had a cupcake from Hill Country Cupcake this morning at the Sunset Valley Farmers Market. Their creations are so darn yummy and a plus is they are made from organic and when possible, local ingredients. I could eat one after another if I let myself. Hey Cupcake is good. I have been to The Cupcakery in Frisco, TX and Sprinkles in Dallas. Both were delicious although I have to say one of them tasted like they may refrigerate their wares a little bit too long and that's a turn-off.
Those cupcakes from Retro Bakery look soooo mmmm gooood!
I went to that bakery when I was there!!!Their the best!
I haven't been yet, but a new place just opened up in Austin, TX called Delish and it's supposed to be great: http://www.delish-cupcakes.com/default.aspx
Also, in Austin there's a guy who sells cupcakes out of an airstream trailer and they are yummy and super popular: http://www.heycupcake.com/story.html
Kupcakz in Tulsa, OK!!
http://www.kupcakz.com/
The Sooner than Later and Pretty in Pink are the best!!
Another one I didn't know about until just now:
Hello Cupcake!
http://www.hellocupcake.com/
Seems to be an order by phone only.
If you're ever in Toronto and head west of it (haha) there's a fabulous little place in Milton called "Flour Girls". Besides the Milton Choristers and the Main Street Quartet, they are the best kept secrets in Ontario! ;)
Flour Girls cupcakes are awesome!
Okay, I LOVE RETRO! and hop scotch is my favorite. i love anything dipped and it reminded me of butterscotch dilly bars from dairy queen.
If you are ever in Utah you must hit up some of our cupcakeries/bakeries
*Mini's Gourmet (Salt Lake City)
*So Cupcake (Salt Lake City)
*The Sweet Tooth Fairy (Provo, UT)
*Cupcake Chic (Sold in various coffee shops in Utah Valley)
I have favorites at all places! But my very favorite at the moment is the Neopolitan cupcake from Cupcake Chic. It's a deep chocoalte and vanilla cupcake with fresh strawberry frosting made with fresh strawberry puree!
So glad you got to try Retro! Happy 4th!
I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. There are a couple of really cute cupcake shops here. My favorite is So Cupcake.
http://www.socupcake.com/index.php
They have a pretty cute website too.
My favorite is probably the Hanky Panky Red Velvet. It's delicious. another good one is Mini's Cupcakes
http://www.mini-cupcakes.com/cupcakehome.html
:)
I've never seen cupcakes dipped in ganache before!! You must be the luckiest person in the world. I'll bet they tasted so much better than they looked and they looked utterly scrumptious!!
Hugs, Nerina :)
If you ever find yourself in Idaho, you must check out Lilly Jane's Cupcakes in Eagle, just outside of Boise! http://www.lillyjanescupcakes.com/
There is a fantastic little cupcake place in Ghiradelli Square in San Francisco. Kara's Cupcakes…I had the most amazing cupcake! YUM! It was vanilla cupcake filled with passion fruit curd and topped with coconut cream cheese frosting. Oh. My. Love. It was AMAZING!
the sweet tooth fairy bakeshop in Provo, Ut..hands down, the best cupcake around! My favorite is the Raspberry lemonade..yum!!
Thank you so much for your inspireing blog!
Your photos are great and you make everything look so delicious. I never have time to try your recepies myself, but your blog makes me dream…
There is a swedish photografer who makes very romantic cupcakes for weddings, etc.
If your want to check out her blog: http://blixman.blogg.se/category/cupcakes.html
How very nice. That was a really thoughtful thing of them to do. Such a fun gift! They look a.m.a.z.i.n.g. I like Tammie Coe in Phoenix!! So worth it if you're in the area. There are two locations — one at 7th Ave and I-10 which is the one I usually go to, but there's one by La Grande Orange (five miles from airport) that I would suggest so you could hit up La Grande Orange for a meal and then Tammie Coe for dessert.
We have two places in Knoxville, TN. The Cupcakery and Cities Cupcakes. They are both amazing.
Oh, are you kidding?!? That's the coolest room service EVER!!! I really had no desire to go back to Vegas….until NOW
I'd totally love to find a cupcake bakery somewhere here in Ottawa, though I've never really thought of it before. I'll definitly be looking for one know, thanks for the inspiration.
scarcelylegal.blogspot.com
Kara's cupcakes in Palo Alto, California. My favorite is the Fleur De Sel, which is a chocolate cupcake with caramel filling, ganache frosting and salt on top. Yum!
That Hopscotch has my name all over it!
Nashville has Gigi's, the Painted Cupcake, and Cupcake Collection (the only one I haven't been to!). Plus some of the bakeries also sell cupcakes.
I love Magpie's in Knoxville. Those girls rock cupcakes.
This blog has a HUGE list of cupcakeries all over the US:
http://cupcakestakethecake.blogspot.com/
I live in California's bay area. I love Kara's Cupcakes.
I have to second "Jilly's Cupcake Bar" in St. Louis on Delmar.
FANTASTIC STUFF!!!
I just adore the Atlanta Cupcake Factory, it's such a treat to go! My favorite is the Salted Carmel Sugar Cookie
Cheers!
Muddy's Bake Shop in Memphis, Tennessee!
A new cupcake shop opened recently in Greenwood, Ind. (a suburb of Indianapolis) Even though I've only tried a few, Our Bake Shoppe has some great flavors! Check them out at http://www.ourbakeshoppe.com/
Another vote here for Trophy Cupcake in Seattle. Fantastic Location, fantastic flavors. My only complaint is that my favorite flavor of theirs (green tea) has fallen off the menu.
But the triple chocolate, triple coconut, Chai cardamom, and Lemon are also great. Seriously I've tried them all and all are worth it!
Nostalgia Cupcakes in Annapolis, MD is wonderful. So far I've tried the lemonade with a spoon of raspberry jam inside, the salted caramel, and the coconut with a dollop of pineapple filling inside. Their "everyday" chocolate is fantastic too. If you get there, be sure to go well before closing because if they sell out, they close early!
What great cupcakes to get as a gift! Here in Houston, we have a great cupcake bakery called "Crave". it is located in Uptown Park in the Galleria area.
Big Fat Cupcake in Denver has great cupcakes. My only complaint is that they are too big, believe it or not!
Oh my goodness!!!! I am going to Vegas next weekend. I so want to try to find these cupcakes. They all looked so yummy. Cant wait.
Oh YuM! I would have done the same thing, taste a little of them ALLLL!
And lovely pics even if the lighting was perfect :) I have been meaning to ask though: how do you get your pics this large when you upload them to your post?
I select the large size option but still mine aren't so big :(
Just thought I'd ask!
Thanks as always Bakerella!!
I second the comment about Society Bakery in Dallas, TX. Hands down they are the best cupcakes I have ever tasted! I love them so much I am having them do my wedding cakes!
Mmmm…I live close to the Retro Bakery and their treats are muy delicioso! I might have to make a cupcake run there this afternoon….
Fantastic! Sorry you missed the tour but sweet of them to leave samples for you. Hope you had plenty of protein at supper to offset the sugar rush!
I'd love to be able to dip like they did the hopscotch and the chocolate cakes… can you share some of your wisdom in that regard? Thanks!
I agree with Lindsey, The Sweet Tooth Fairy in Provo IS AMAZING!!!
http://www.thesweettoothfairy.com
I love the Raspberry Lemonade!
I love Kara's Cupcakes:
http://www.karascupcakes.com/
They have several locations in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area. YUM!
The Cocoa Bean in Rexburg, ID is so fun and tasty! I wish we had more cupcake bakeries around here.
http://thecocoabeancupcakecafe.blogspot.com/
Those look delicious and I can't wait for my next trip to Vegas to try them!
Some of my favorite shops:
Sibby's Cupcakery – San Mateo, CA
Yummy Cupcakes – Burbank, CA
Crumb's Bakeshop – Beverly Hills, CA
The Cupcakery in Vegas is really good and they just opened one near me in Frisco,TX – Try the
"Oh my gosh Ganache!"
Just another reason to want to visit Vegas!! Those look sooo good!!
A truly great (and somewhat new) cupcake bakery in Chicago that you should check out is called Phoebe's Cupcakes. My roommate and I just discovered them in our neighborhood. The bakery itself is so cute and charming, and the cupcakes themselves are to die for! Any Bakerella readers in the Chicago/Lakeview area should give it a try. :) http://www.phoebescupcakes.com/
http://www.cravecupcakes.ca
In Calgary, Alberta, Canada! My favourite is the Dirty Blonde!
i have not been, but have heard that these are fantastic in Denver
Happy Cakes
http://www.happycakesdenver.com/index.html
when i was in l.a. we drove by the place that is so famous and has a line around it, but my friend told me that i MUST go to this other, hole in the wall one, instead. there, i got a red velvet cupcake and a carrot cake one. i do not like cake, and i do not like frosting. i was not planning on falling in love that day. i ate both before the plane took off
MMMMMM! DELICIUS ,THEY ARE SWEET AND
ORIGINAL
Sounds incredible! Who knew there could be so many flavors for cupcakes?
I saw your name in the latest issue of Cookie magazine! Congrats!
Holy moly! I'm glad they are no where near me!!!! I would NOT be able to resist a daily visit.
Yum! do you have any piggie cake pops? My daughter is turning 8 next month and wants a piggie party. I thought piggie pops would be so cute.
mamaduso5 at gmail dot com
Thanks
I live in Vegas but haven't been to Retro yet. Have tried the Cupcakery but was disappointed. Glad you enjoyed yourself! *Ü*
We have one in Puyallup, WA called "Indulge…Cupcakes." Some of my favorites of theirs are Lemon w/ rasperry filling and lemon cream cheese frosting, Orange Dreamsicle, and they have a FABULOUS Strawberry Shortcake one with strawberry filling and a ribbon of strawberry through the frosting. My husband also loves their Carmel Macchiato. (It's a coffee thing:P) We ordered a bunch for our daughter's first birthday and they were a HIT!
Those look so good. If you ever happen to be in Pittsburgh you have to stop into Dozen Bakery.
Try the East End Stout. A chocolate cake made with a local stout beer…yum!
http://www.dozencupcakes.com/html/menu.html
Those look DIVINE.
I'm pretty sure we'll be in vegas later this year, now I must try these.
I love SO CUPCAKE in Holladay Utah. They are SOOO good! Love the lemon. Mmmmm…going to wait for my birthday though…only a few months away!
We have "The Cupcakery" here in Frisco, TX (just north of Dallas). There is also one in Vegas.
Those look delicious! I have been going to all the cupcake shops in the LA area to try to determine who has the best cupcakes. So far, my two favorites are Becker's Bakery in Manhattan Beach (so amazing!) and Violet's Cupcakes in Pasadena(amazing too!).
I can't recommend one in Tulsa because the only one we have is just okay, but in Oklahoma City, Cuppies and Joe is delish! I love the Mary Poppins one the best. And in Nashville I've had Gigi's Cupcakes – yum! But the best is Saint Cupcake in Portland, Oregon. I even had my husband bring me a box home from a business trip once.
Retro Bakery in Las Vegas has the BEST cupcakes in town!
I have tried The Cupcakery many times, hoping they would taste as good as they look. Each time I was disappointed, especially considering what they cost. They were extremely dry, and the flavors had a chemical aftertaste which makes me think they don't use real flavorings.
Retro is always moist and delicious! I might have to go there later today…….
here in west los angeles there is a fabulous little cupcake bakery called "hotcakes bakes" – best. cupcakes. ever. yum.
yes yes yes i HIGHLY recommend GiGi's Cupcakes here in Nashville, TN. the website is http://gigiscupcakesusa.com/ and some of my favs are orange dreamsicle and the pumpkin cream. SO SO SO GOOD!
If you're ever in Seattle, Trophy Cupcakes and Cupcake Royale are both amazing! Cupcake Royale has the BEST salted caramel chocolate cupcakes.
When in Kansas City, a visit to Cupcake ala Mode is a must! I'm very fond of their Bella Nutella cupcake with hazelnut buttercream, a pirouette cookie and a hazelnut truffle. Yum! http://www.cupcakealamode.com
In Salt Lake I love Mini's and in Provo I give my vote to Sugar Tooth Fairy. ;)
For a great list of Utah Cupcakeries try here: http://utahlovescupcakes.com/utahs-cupcakes/
So glad Yummy in my Tummy posted. I live in the Seattle area and was just thinking that I've never seen a cupcake bakery. Now I know where to go!
Retro Bakery's cupcakes look (and sound) sensational! I'm hungry… :)
Those look amazing! I love the old school look of the way the buttercream is swirled, and dipping them in ganache I've not seen.
We have a prinkles down here but there have been a bunch of cupcake places opening up.
Come visit So Cal!
I am going to Vegas next week and making my list of bakeries to visit…some people shop, some people visit tourist attractions…I cupcake! This was one of the ones on my list to try so I am glad you liked it!
In albuquerque i think the best is cupcakeology although state street cafe makes some pretty mean cupcakes too and their choc cake is to die for!
I HAVE to go there. Those look so so so amazing! I want the milk and cookies one!
Isn't that something. I live in Las Vegas and never heard of Retro Bakery. Now I must go try their cupcakes!! Thanks for sharing. The cookies and milk looks amazing!
I live in Georgia, so Im DEFINATELY going to have to check out the cupcake bakery in Atlanta. Thanks for the tip!
I live in Orange County, CA and there is a bakery about 20 minutes away called Dolcissimo. My brother and sister-in-law had their cupcakes at their wedding and I didn't believe them when they said they are better than Sprinkles. Then I tried them…wow! So much better than Sprinkles! They had a snickerdoodle cupcake which was amazing!
http://www.dolcissimobakeshop.com/
The Cupcake Station in Birmingham, Michigan has great cupcakes! My favorite is the Creme Francaise. A dark chocolate cake with French Buttercream. Sinful!
Looks yummy! We havent had a chance yet to visit any of the cupcake shops around Denver Co. yet but there are quite a few. I really want to get up to Boulder to Tee and Cakes which has some really creative flavors such as just noticed a beer cupcake (dont think I'll try that one) but the one I really want to try is the chocolate bacon cupcake. http://www.teeandcakes.com/
If you're ever in Fort Collins, CO, go to the Buttercream Cupcakery. It is sooooooooo good!!!!
AZ….Tammy Coe Cpcakes. She makes wedding cakes too. DO NOT come to visit here until September. This weekend the temp. is going to be 118F!!! You and your cupcakes would melt into the pavement!
Those cupcakes are incredible! I love the unique flavor pairings.
In Chicago I've been wanting to try Bleeding Heart Bakery. Maybe I will do that today!
I used to live in New York City and had two favorite cupcake shops. In my Brooklyn neighborhood I frequented the Little Cupcake Bakeshop. In Manhattan I was a big fan of Magnolia Bakery.
You should plan a bakery tour of the U.S. so we can continue to eat vicariously through you! Thanks for all your baking inspirations!
We liv in Henderson, NV which is just next to Vegas. Retro Bakery is about 45 minutes away on the North side of town so we go to the Cupcakery out by us.
They are delectable! You can get a single cupcake and put it in a little box to give as a gift. Love it! My favorite is their Red Velvet but the ganoche filled ones are divine as well.
If you are in St. Louis, you need to try Jilly's Cupcake Bar on Delmar. They have delicious huge cupcakes in exciting flavors. My favorite is Chocolate Thunder. It is a chocolate lovers dream!!!! How cool is that…go on vacation and get lots of cupcakes delivered to you room service style!!! You are one lucky girl!
Those look divine! In Salt Lake City, UT, the best cupcake place is Mini's. http://www.mini-cupcakes.com/
I have been to Sprinkles in Scottsdale and I went to another cupcake place, but they were dry so I won't mention their name.
Not sure I could pick out a favorite in the cupcakes you got! The pink lemonade one sounds divine, and I ADORE chocolate and peanut butter…difficult decisions.
I live in Cleveland, and a delightful little bakery opened up last year in the Tremont neighborhood. I haven't been there yet, but a friend of mine has, and she loves it! Last Fall, I was going to have a few friends over for dinner on my birthday, and I ended up cancelling because I came down with a nasty sinus infection. My friend brought me cupcakes from this bakery on my birthday. You can get to their website here: A Cookie and a Cupcake.
Oh my gosh! That is probably the best surprise ever! How many people get off a plane, tired and wanting to crash and are greeted with something that fabulous!
You, my friend know how to make the right connections.
;)

No, I don't think we have a cupcake bakery, but I would seriously LOVE to open one.
Those look DELISH!
You must try a little shop in Ft Myers, FL called Robins Nest. She makes the most AMAZING orange mimosa cupcakes. You have not lived till you have tried one!
Mmmmmm…YUMMY!!!! Not sure if you ever make it up to Canada, but if you ever find your way to Manitoba, visit Winnipeg and hit up 'The Cupcakery'…DELICIOUS!!!
http://www.thecupcakeryshop.ca/
Those look so wonderful, my mouth was watering just looking at the pics.
I wish we did have a cupcake bakery, oh how I wish we did!!!
Near Raleigh, NC: Cupcake Envy! They make some of the most creative mini-cakes and cupcakes that I've ever seen.
http://www.cupcakeenvy.com
We were in vegas too on the 4th! I wish I could have met you guys. Oh well, another time!
Yes! I have to tell you I think you left the best cupcakes behind in Dallas by going to Sprinkles…Celebrity Bakery has a better cupcake, for sure. But, IMHO, the best cupcake in Dallas is at Society Bakery-like your friend in Las Vegas, they are all about the buttercream! They were voted one of the ten best cupcakes in the US by the Ellen Degeneres show a while back. And-they give 10% of all profits to charity. There is also a new place in town-near downtown called the Cupcakery. I'll be checking that place out soon to see how it measures up. So, when next in Dallas, please check out some of these places!
Honestly, if someone would have delivered those to me, I would have sat down and cried. Clutching them tightly of course. Then I would have grabbed a large glass of milk and found a place to be alone. Just me and the cupcakes.(good book title)
Oh, yes, Bakerella! You must check out Swirlz in Chicago. But I warn you…they'll make you all tingly.
http://www.swirlzcupcakes.com/
And if you DO come to Chicago, hit me up…we'll meet for cupcakes!
If you're ever in Memphis, TN, you've got to try Muddy's Bake Shop – http://www.muddysbakeshop.com/
Must. leave. house. find. cupcake. Holy moly. What a wonderful surprise! Thanks for letting us share vicariously.
Wow, wow, wow! Those are fantastic! I totally want to try making the ones with the chocolate chip cookie on top next time I need to make a dessert!!! Yum!
In Kansas City (right downtown near the Market) there is a wonderful cupcake bakery called "BabyCakes" ! isn't that the cutest! They make handmade chocolates as well!
What a cupcake adventure. Don't you just love it when something looks great and tastes great? What a fun, fun treat. ~Kelly

Now that looked so GOOD!!! You amke me want to go bake to Vegas….. We got engaged there 8 years ago and have vowed to go back but children and life have come to prevent this now these cupcakes and needing a vacation REALLY bad are making it a top priority!!!!!!!!!!!
DC has recently taken off with the cupcake craze, but I haven't had one since it hit and I don't feel any sense of urgency. I love the idea of cupcake bakeries, but when you can't even count how many there are in our little city, well, I don't want to waste my time with sub-par cupcakes! I'd love it if anyone has recommendations in the district.
if you're ever in NYC, you've GOT to go visit Magnolia Bakery (http://www.magnoliacupcakes.com/) They are quite famous, Sarah Jessica Parker loves their cupcakes too. =) I've had a lot of cupcakes and theirs is one of a kind. There is just something about the dense & buttery cake & the pretty pastel frosting.
Also, I've heard Crumbs is good too. =) (really BIG cupcakes) (http://www.crumbs.com/cupcakes)
Please go try them if you're ever in New York!! You won't be disappointed! =)
Our favorite is the Cupcake Cottage in Fort Worth. They have the sweetest little store and the yummiest, all natural ingredients, cupcakes!
http://www.thecupcakecottage.com
These look AMAZING! I want to experiment and try them all now!!
if you're ever in the midwest, try babycakes (babycakeskc.com) in the rivermarket in downtown kansas city, mo. delish!
those cupcakes look gorgeous! i absolutely wouldn't have been able to wait.
The next time I'm in Vegas I'm totally trying that place. I was going to say I want to try this place called Sweet Tooth Fairy…but someone already wrote about it! :) Must be good and I should go try it. Can I have a pre=baby cupcake to celebrate that she is almost here??
We live in Baton Rouge and sadly, there are no good cupcake shops. There is one place, but it has the misfortune of sharing a lobby with a hair salon…plus we just can't figure out why their cuppy cakes are so dry and dense…luckily The Fresh Market sells BIG cupcakes for .99…..which will have to do for now. This is why we LOVE hearing about other shops! OMG! All the new flavors to try out at home! My 4 year old loves our 'experiments' =)
I haven't made it there yet but I am excited to try Babycakes in Lexington, KY.

hi bakerella! you are one luncky gal! I haven't been to any cupcakeries – but i made your buttercream recipe for my own cupcakes this past weekend (for my twins's first birthday!). you can see pics at http://www.demingtwins.blogspot.com.And the buttercream was the hit of the party! Thank you!
In Albuquerque, New Mexico there is a shop called Cake Fetish. What I love about them is the frosting, so creamy and not too sweet. Perfect!
And by the way, I saw your shout-out in Cookie Magazine. I had to re-read it because I thought for sure that's not the same Bakerella that I read? But it is!
Cool!
I've been to Cupcake Station in Birmingham, MI and was not impressed. The decoration was OK – nothing special and the cake was dry. I've not been to the place in Ann Arbor.
Haha I bet those were good. They looked good.
The carnage!
Retro Bakery is bar far the best in source for cupcakes in Vegas… they're awesome!
The Cupcakery in Vegas has the best cupcakes ever (and I mean better than anything I have found in NY, LA or Chicago).
In Des Moines, check out Carefree Patisserie.
they do look delish…sadly i haven't found anything 'to die for' here in my town. Nothing. Nada. Zip.
It's sad, I know.
O DELICIOUS! I love the choc chip cookie one, I will have to try that soon!!! Love your website Bakerella, i am so inspired, and south africans are loving cake balls!!

I've been wanting to check out The Cupcake Station in Birmingham, Michigan. I've been to Cake Nouveau in Ann Arbor and the cupcakes there were pretty darn good!
I'm salivating! Those flavors sounds delish!
You deserve every one! :D
My old high school friend and I are currently on a hunt to find the best dessert in Seattle, and there's a couple of cupcake places on our list. We go out every Tuesday (dinner + desert), and I love every minute of it! So far our favorite place is Tango, and it's best to go on a Tuesday.
Sift Cupcakery in Cotati, CA and Napa, CA. They are simply DELISH!!!!!
My fav is only avail during Christmas but it is Peppermint!!!!

There is a great cupcake shop in Melbourne here in Australia called 'Crabapple Bakery'. We are heading to the states for a holiday in Sept, will be going to Vegas and I've just added to the list of places I must go, Retro bakery here I come!!
Retro Bakery = AWESOME!
I ate there the last time I was in town visiting my brother and sister-in-law. We all got one, split it into 4 pieces and then tried each others. Best dessert I've had in a long time.
OH YEAH!!! As a Vegas resident, I can say how awesome the Retro Bakery is. Hope you had a great time while you were here!!!
Those look SO good! The pink lemonade, all the chocolate ones, and the…you know what, ALL of them!
Yes! Their cupcakes do rock! So glad you were able to try them. Hopscotch is also one of my favs.
Those look SO good!
If your ever in Seattle, I would love to visit either one or ALL of these cupcake shops with you=):Trophy Cupcakes, Cupcake Royale, & The Yellow Leaf Cupcake Co. I have never been there and I live a little over an hour away! One place I have been that is much closer to me is hello, cupcake which is in Tacoma. I did my the taste too=) If I remember correctly I bought every flavor they had. Take a look=) http://ibrakeforcupcakes.blogspot.com/2009/05/taking-break-from-baking.html
That was so sweet of her. The cupcakes all look scrumptious! I think the red, white and blueberry would be one of my faves too :-)
So incredibly thoughtful! What a fantastic way to celebrate. We're heading to Vegas on our around the world tour, so I will have to check them out. Thanks for the heads up!
I'm not sure if you ever get to Canada, but everyone in Victoria, BC is talking about Ooh La La Cupcakes:
http://www.oohlalacupcakes.ca/menu.html

There is a great little cupcake bakery in Provo, Utah called "The Sweet Tooth Fairy". They are delicious and the shop is so cute. My favorite cupcake from there (so far)is the red velvet with vanilla frosting.
Love it! I live in vegas and have been thinking of going to culinary school for patissarie and baking, with the dream of eventually having my own bakery. I'll have to check you out for sure!
