Okay… finally, the post from last weekend. My camera never did wake up by the way. But I did manage to get all the photos off using a friend’s card reader. Yay! Unfortunately, no built in card readers on my printer or computer… Boo!
And, I would have posted this last night, but I spent the evening at Pioneer Woman’s book signing in Atlanta. Fun! Fun! More on that soon. Thankfully, I did have a working camera with me for that. A brand new Canon Digital Rebel XSi that I borrowed. It’s nice having generous friends. But, I kinda wish I hadn’t started using it. I might not be able to give it back. Bigger screen, More megapixels. And I’ve convinced myself the photo quality is far superior. It is. I know it is. Maybe my camera will be unfixable. Is that a word?
Anyway, here’s the goods or goodies from last weekend.
It’s coming up on Christmas, so I wanted to make some decorated sugar cookies. But I didn’t really want to make traditional Christmas shapes. So instead, I used a cute little cupcake cutter I recently bought. I also went with a less than traditional color scheme and chocolate sugar cookies to help make the colors pop.
I love sugar cookies. Too bad I love them more than they love me. I’m still trying to perfect my piping. I will not give up. I will have non-lumpy lines one day.
These were two of the better ones.

See …… Okay, I’m kidding. I kid. These are the good ones. Well, the better ones anyway.
It helps to plan ahead when you work with royal icing. Draw out the colors you want for borders and the colors you want to fill with in advance.
The cookie recipe is from the book, Cookie Craft. Get a copy if you have any desire to learn how to make these kind of decorated cookies. It’s jam-packed with tips and tricks.

Well, over here in Holland we don’t celebrate Christmas with gifts – well, not all of us at least. For that we have something called “Sinterklaas” (sounds a lot like Santa Claus), which is celebrated on the evening of December 5 – so it has already passed. This year, all I wanted is to spend the evening with my family – I hadn’t see them all that much lately, and when we did meet, it was more of a staying over at my parents’ place then a spending some quality time together. So this year, the four of us spend the evening together, sharing a meal, playing games, drinking tea and eating something we call ‘kruidnoten’ (a typical Sinterklaas product), and of course chatting up. It was so much fun!
And in fact, I even got a present, a novel by Nicci French.. I’ll read it this Christmas, when I’ll be spending another few days with my family. I hope we’ll have just as much fun together as we had when spending Sinterklaas together.
And I hope everybody will have such a wonderful Christmas time!

If you want straight, non-lumpy lines, try adding 1/2 tsp piping gel per cup of icing and then use the same technique as when you’re writing on a cake or piping drop strings on a wedding cake, which is to squeeze and let the icing “drop” from the tip as you pull the tip away from the surface, then lightly touch the surface and release the pressure to stop the line. I know it seems contradictory but you will have more control over the line if you pull the tip away from the surface as you pipe the icing out.
Oh, and for Christmas, I want a subscription to Cake Central’s new magazine, a room just for my caking supplies, and a more time to read blogs like Bakerella!!!

On the unrealistic side, I’d love a new pc. Mine is very ancient and I was supposed to get one for my birthday back in May but…then the car needed $800 in repairs and it never happened.
The reason it’s unrealistic is that the more practical thing I’d like is a new job. The company I worked for went out of business the day before Thanksgiving. So it’s put quite a damper on my holiday spirits.
i’m looking forward to heaps of good family time.. and hoping for a kitchen aid mixer!

I was just telling my husband last night that I’d like to have more heavy gauge cookie pans and stacking cooling racks that won’t rust in the dishwasher! We both have a gluten intolerance so when I make glutenous things I have to run the racks through the dishwasher to ensure all traces are gone!
I just want the Lord to answer my prayers and heal my friends baby! He is fighting for his life in NICU………Please Lord God heal baby Isaiah!
I want to spend as much time with my husband as possible. We are both very busy students and are excited for the break!

I want 2 weeks off and free ingredients so I can bake and decorate all the stuff I’ve been wanting to but never have the time!
What do I wish for Christmas…..to get over my fear of camping outside in a tent. This way I can enjoy the time with my family when the boys and my husband go camping. I’d love to receive that camera too!! I would also love for my grandmother to feel better and my mother to live one day without arthritic pain. Happy Holidays!

I want my parents to come spend Christmas at our house. I want to move back to Atlanta. On practical terms, I want a book by one of my favorite authors – any of them, because it seems they ALL came out with new books this year.
I’m really hoping that the kids can talk Hubby into buying out the Taste of Home catalog. I want just about everything in it! But beyond that, I really want to enjoy loving & spending time w/ my husband & two children.
I want Santa to bring me awesome baking skills like Bakerella!
I got to come home and see my family for the holidays, which is what I really wanted. Plus I get to have my first Christmas together with my boyfriend and our new kitten. Yay holidays :)

What I want for Christmas?? Someone to hire my husband now that he’s graduated from college!
Oh my, those are SO cute!! For Christmas I would love for everyone to get along. You know there is always that one thing that someone will say & the argument starts. UGH!
I would also love to have a Wii Fit, I really need to start working out!!
I would love some new picture frames for our bedroom.
