Check out these chicks!

Farm Chicks 1

Have you heard of these chicks before? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago. It was really kind of a weird little coincidence. I was in the bookstore picking up Pioneer Woman Cookbooks for a recent giveaway and my eyes locked in on a book called The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. Loved the title and the design, but because I was over my limit on books for the day, make that month, all I did was thumb through the pages really quickly before I made myself leave.

But then, just two days later I received an email from none other than Serena, one of THE Farm Chicks. Seriously. Out of the blue. Two days later. Does stuff like that happen to you, too? Strange coincidences? It does to me all the time.

(Hmmm… The Pioneer Woman and The Farm Chicks. That’s kinda weird, too. Okay, I’m moving to the country.)

Anyway, it was a really short email message that said she wanted to send me something.

Curious, I said, ok. (I like surprises.)

Farm Chicks 6

And boy was I surprised when several days later I received a package full of all of these sweet, sweet gift tags.

Farm Chicks 2

Some with little cakes.

Farm Chicks 5

And others with sweet messages.

Farm Chicks 4

Plus there were all these fun recipe cards. (Forgive me for the extra blurriness. I was playing with different settings on my camera.)

Farm Chicks 3

Some even had Christmas themes.

I had no idea they had all these cute products plus a cookbook. Impressive.

Farm Chicks 13

Speaking of their book, I had to run out to the bookstore and get it right away.

Farm Chicks 14

Farm Chicks 8

Wish I had seen this before trying to make a pie last week. Could have come in handy.

Farm Chicks 9

The Farm Chicks love some pie. And the book has several yummy ones like this.

Farm Chicks 10

Plus, it has fun, do-it-yourself projects throughout. I’ve never made scones, but if I do, I want a scone cozy to go with them. Cozy scones. Yes. I want my scones to be cozy. Adorableness. Cuteness doesn’t quite cut it here.

Farm Chicks 11

Hi Serena. Thanks for sending me all the fun stuff. I love it.

Especially the necklace.

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys about the necklace. Well, it has a cake on the front of it and it’s just darling.

See.

Farm Chicks 7

And, since Serena sent me two of them… well…

Would you like one? Then, we can both look super cute, adorned in cake.

Farm Chicks 12

I’ll even throw in some of my gift tags and recipe cards, too. I’m a sharer.

  1. My favorite Christmas sweets are Pecan tassies… They are amazing… and just the perfect size.

  2. My favorite Christmas dessert is peppermint candy cane cookies. They are white(plain) and red (peppermint flavored) sugar cookie ropes twisted together into a cane shape that my mother used to make when I was a child. I remember thinking what a special and talented person she was, being able to make these beautiful and delicious cookies by the dozens!

  3. I’ve two favorites Christmas treats : Sugar Cookies and ‘Pompe à l’Huile d’Olive’ (it’s one of the 13 Provençal desserts).

This year i’d like to try Red Velvet Cupcakes.

  4. This is a toughie… Anything with sugar, butter and cream I love. But I’ll say… the extra spicy gingerbread cake I bake.

  5. Here in the UK (yes that’s where I hail from, and in fact where I live)… it’s customary to homebake mince pies during the Festive season.

They are not very well known over in the U.S of A, so I tend to offer them to any American guests who happen to be visiting these shores during Nov or Dec. They always go down well!

FYI: Mince in this context is not a shredded meat product!!
Mince = a delicious mix of apples, vine fruits, mixed peel, cinnamon and nutmeg.
Half the fun of sharing mince pies with American (or indeed any non-British based) friends is the ‘amusing’ exchange regarding the key ingredient. Oh what fun we have….

  6. Well, it must be the Swedish classic christmas candy called “Knäck”. (It translates into “crack” which is both the sound your fillings might make when you eat these, and how addictive it is). It’s a sort of hard, chewy caramel – you boil equal parts of cream, sugar and golden syrup, the add chopped almonds. Yum!

  7. Perfecting a new kind of pie suggested by my sister-in-law this Thanksgiving….hmmm had never considered it and a search on Food TV yields nothing like it!

  8. why? why don’t I live in the US????? You have so many creative things and shop/persons to get staff from!!!

well.. my favorite cake is the chocolate Christmas “tronchetto” of my mother.. is a tradition… it is like a log cake.. with mascarpone cream inside and chocolate all over it.. with all the decoration.. it is not Christmas if I don’t get a slice of it :-)

    This is my e-mail: superbiondina@gmail.com
    Ilenia from simplynabiki.com

  9. My favourite is the Swedish traditional chistmasdessert
Ris a la malta. You can also find it in Denmark and France.
It´s a sort of ricepudding with cream, vanilla and oranges.

Recepie (I used google translate so sorry if the translation isn´t very good)
    1 1 / 4 round grains
    8 dl water
    0.5 tsp salt
    2 tablespoons granulated sugar
    1 teaspoon vanilla sugar
    2 oranges for garnish

Rinse the rice a few minutes in the colander.
Boil water with salt and pour in the rice.
Let the rice cook with lid for 20 minutes.
Let cool. Spread the rice on a tray so it cools faster.
Whip the cream and flavoring it with granulated sugar and vanilla sugar.
Mix the rice and cream in a bowl and cool way.
When rice à la maltan is cold, it can be served. You can garnish it with pieces of orange items. apelsinféer. Cut away the rind of the orange with a knife, start with the bottom and then go around and cut the edges and the white with a knife. Cut in along with the white in each gap so that you get the file.

  10. Really? I have to pick just one?!

Well, I love my dad’s homemade cherry cheesecake. It not only is delicious, but it reminds me of the holidays and spending time with family.

  11. Pizzelles are the one true thing that remind me of Christmas. You spend all day making them (especially if you have a machine that only cooks 2 at a time) but there’s nothing like the smell of fresh anise in the house.

  12. My grandma always made a huge array of delicious cookies like potato chip cookies that people just don’t make anymore, but I was and still am a sucker for her booze balls. She used whiskey (the good stuff, and she sampled to make sure :) they are fudgey and nutty, but the alcohol is not baked out so I was always limited, but I snuck a few here and there. :)
    lynzlou315@gmail.com

  13. Brownie Balls! My new favorite! Saw Bakerella’s cake balls, and modified with brownies because I love brownies :)

    luna621@gmail.com

  14. Nothing beats the vast assortment of cookies from our “Cookie Exchange” with friends. Always new and exciting offerings every year.

  15. Fudge! or peanut brittle…its a tough decision.

  16. My newest favorite Holiday tradition has become baking holiday cookies with my hubby and a few friends… For the last 5 of 6 years we have set aside an evening and closed down our friends bagel shop on a Sunday evening. Once that has been completed it becomes “cookie central.”
We make about a hundred dozen cookies, (industrial mixers, baking racks and ovens rock) place them on trays and make them for friends and family. We have such a great time doing this and our friends and family have really enjoyed them and always look forward to what recipes we decide throw in to mix things up.

  17. I can’t live without at least one box of frango mints at christmas time! To bake; I have to have the original peanut butter blossoms…heaven.

  18. It’s hard for me to pick a favorite sweet. My late mother started our family tradition of baking goodies for Christmas that we don’t make any other time of year, so they seem extra special. I guess I’ll have to say homemade cream puffs. I also love mince meat pie. And ……….on & on & on. :) This is very sweet of you to share. Thanks for a chance at the giveaway. Dani {d.h127@yahoo.com}

  19. Hmmmm favorite Christmas treat, I would have to say its our family recipe for Wreath Cookies…. I am not so much sure that its the cookie itself that is what I am so fond of, it is definately yummy, but I think it is influenced by the memory of going over to my Grandma’s and baking them with her… rolling out the dough and baking them and then getting to play with the green frosting that I would get to adorn with the “little red balls” (ie non perils) that are supposed to be holly… it was a special treat for me because I was the only grandchild that got to come over and help bake the wreath cookies. For me this whole thing has become such a part of my holiday tradition that even after her passing all I wanted was her rolling pin and the dough mat, and now every year I pull out her rolling pin and cookie cutter and make wreath cookies and remember fondly the time in the kitchen with my Grandma! :)

  20. Oh, these are so delightful!
My absolute favorite Christmas dessert – mind you, I am in Australia so we usually celebrate Christmas outside with a delicious barbie (australian slang for barbecue) – would be my pistachio-raspberry semifreddo, based on a recipe by Bill Granger. To die for! :)

Do let me know if you would like me to share. I like sharing too, just like you… you are still the best sharer of them all though, thank you again for the opportunity to win!

Oh… and… I take my hat off for you, Miss Bakerella. Truly I do.

  21. Though it’s the stuff of holiday jeers, my fruitcake is to die for. I make it in July, then baste it with brandy/rum until November. That’s when it’s enrobed in marzipan. Once the Marzipan is semi-dried it’s coated with royal icing. The icing is allowed to dry till firm (about 1 week) and then the figurines are added to the top. Typically a winter scene of ice skaters, with trees and deer. A wide red ribbon is tied round the middle (remember the cake and icing are firm) and it’s displayed on a cake stand in all its glory. The inside is a golden brown, rich spicy cake studded with almonds, dried apricot, cranberries, sweet cherries, plums, currents etc. One taste and everyone agrees this is the most flavorful, moist and textured cake ever! We call it Christmas cake, (not fruitcake) to help avoid any preconceived notions!

  22. My daughter lives in Spokane Wa. and she has gone to see the farm chicks and loved their aprons! At christmas last year I baked 14,000 yes thats right 14,000 cookies so I ‘m sure that cookies are my favorite christmas treats! I love giving them for gifts to family and friends!!!

  23. My favorite holiday dessert is candy cane cookies, and growing up my mom always makes some yummy cookies called “Chinese Chews”(don’t ask me why they call them that). It was a recipe that was handed down from my great grandma. I also love snickerdoodles!

  24. It’s hard to narrow it down but my favorite cookie to make is Cinnamon Bun Cookies. So yummy and just the right amount of sweetness.

  25. i am a Muslim i don’t do Christmas.. however in our Muslims Eids we eat a lot of traditional Emaratie food…

    if u ever wanted 2 come to UAE/ Dubai i would love 2 show u around…

  26. Although I have enjoyed getting my Russian husband hooked on Pecan Pie, I have to say our favorite dessert during the holidays is the Yule Log cake from Nigella Lawson’s Feast. There have been triumphs and disasters over the years – but what else is baking really about? When it works well its magnificent and its always fun trying to decorate it in a proper ‘woodsy’ fashion.

  27. I love when you get platters of christmas cookies from friends because you always get to try different versions of your favorites!

  28. My sister-in-law makes a Swedish coffee ring with white almond icing that I fantasize about all year long! Warm with butter on it. WOW…I can’t wait!

  35. What’s your favorite sweet or dessert at Christmas?

Oooh, tough choice. It’s gotta be my neighbors’ chocolate cake. She makes them all by herself and it is super good. Not too sweet, but not too plain, and 100% chocolicious….

She has yet to give me the recipe, but I’m working on it :)

  36. my favourite Christmas dessert would have to be the classic pumpkin pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. beautiful.

  37. All of these things are just so cute. I love to make a ‘rocky road’ cheesecake for a Christmas dessert – yum!!

  38. LOVE your blog, lady. Been a visitor for quite some time now. Always inspiring.

Fave holiday treat… *the good milk*. My grandma called it that and what she was referred to was eggnog (yum!!), served with a bit of cinnamon. At age 12 she spiked it for the first time with a splash of brandy. Miss her.

  39. Favorite Christmas sweet… would have to be sand tarts made from the recipe my great aunt used to use – or her springerle, or liebkucken – any of the cookies my great aunt made and kept in the large tins in her root celler. My parents would bundle us up and take us to her house to watch Rudolph on her color TV and she would set out plates of cookies and glasses of cold milk and we would have a little Christmas party there in her living room.

  40. The last few years I just love to have pumpkin roll from my friend Jeanette, but this year I’m baking sugar cookies. Of course we always seem to have fruit salad, good old favorite that I just love.

  41. It’s taken a few years, but I’ve discovered a fantastic gingerbread cookie recipe that has them come out soft, but not too soft, and I love making those for the holiday season.

    meganmhammond@aol.com

  66. Buckeyes! They were only at a few random Christmases at my aunt’s house but I still associate them with the holiday. I miss them with all their peanut-butter-and-chocolatety goodness, mmm.

  67. Every year we have fudge at Christmastime. I am in love with all things chocolate so fudge is the best! However I hate dealing with the candy thermometer and the possibility of burning the chocolate so I make microwave marshmallow fudge :-)
