Have you heard of these chicks before? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago. It was really kind of a weird little coincidence. I was in the bookstore picking up Pioneer Woman Cookbooks for a recent giveaway and my eyes locked in on a book called The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. Loved the title and the design, but because I was over my limit on books for the day, make that month, all I did was thumb through the pages really quickly before I made myself leave.
But then, just two days later I received an email from none other than Serena, one of THE Farm Chicks. Seriously. Out of the blue. Two days later. Does stuff like that happen to you, too? Strange coincidences? It does to me all the time.
(Hmmm… The Pioneer Woman and The Farm Chicks. That’s kinda weird, too. Okay, I’m moving to the country.)
Anyway, it was a really short email message that said she wanted to send me something.
Curious, I said, ok. (I like surprises.)
And boy was I surprised when several days later I received a package full of all of these sweet, sweet gift tags.
Some with little cakes.
And others with sweet messages.
Plus there were all these fun recipe cards. (Forgive me for the extra blurriness. I was playing with different settings on my camera.)
Some even had Christmas themes.
I had no idea they had all these cute products plus a cookbook. Impressive.
Speaking of their book, I had to run out to the bookstore and get it right away.
Wish I had seen this before trying to make a pie last week. Could have come in handy.
The Farm Chicks love some pie. And the book has several yummy ones like this.
Plus, it has fun, do-it-yourself projects throughout. I’ve never made scones, but if I do, I want a scone cozy to go with them. Cozy scones. Yes. I want my scones to be cozy. Adorableness. Cuteness doesn’t quite cut it here.
Hi Serena. Thanks for sending me all the fun stuff. I love it.
Especially the necklace.
Oh, I forgot to tell you guys about the necklace. Well, it has a cake on the front of it and it’s just darling.
See.
And, since Serena sent me two of them… well…
Would you like one? Then, we can both look super cute, adorned in cake.
I’ll even throw in some of my gift tags and recipe cards, too. I’m a sharer.
(necklace, recipe cards and gift tags)

Biscochitos- My aunt from New Mexico used to make them about this time every year, she has been stricken with severe arthritis in her hands and can no longer make them. When I graduated high school, her gift to me was a popcorn tin FULL of biscochitos that she had made. It was the best thing i have ever received because I knew what she went through to make them. She eventually gave me the recipe (and a promise of torture if I shared that recipe), so I carry on the Tradition. Now when the weather gets chilly, my kids ask when I am going to make them :)
Spice cake! Fall and winter are my absolute favorite just because of delicious spice cake!

One of my favorite little things to make this time of year is cookies frosted to look like snowmen. I have a recipe for a butter cookie (made with butter cake mix) which I make and then frost with white frosting. I use mini-chocolate chips for eyes, an orange Tic Tac for his nose and a small piece of strawberry licorice whip for his mouth. I made them one year for a Christmas cookie swap and they were a hit. I’ve since made them for school Christmas parties and brought them to work. Very easy and cute!
Spritz cookies, all the way!

I would have to say “Chicken Balls”. I have no idea what they are really called – a large marshmallow dipped in a caramel mixture and then rolled in Rice Krispies. Why are they called chicken balls? The person I got the recipe from had a problem with her kids eating all of them before the big party. Her solution? Putting them in a container labeled “chicken balls” in the pantry. Needless to say, no one dared open that container. What can I say, the funny name stuck!
Someone once introduced me to mini prune muffins covered in cinnamon sugar. The mere thought of prune muffins sounded gross, but once I bit into one I was hooked. I haven’t had one in years.

My favorite cookie is one that was given to me when I got married 29 years ago along with cookie sheets and baking supplies. This lady (who sadly is no longer with us) use to work with my grandmother in our local school cafeteria for years and years. My mom fondly remembers that when she went to school there she and other students could work in the cafeteria and get free food. My mom said that everyone fought to work in the cafeteria so that they could bake with Miss Monk! She had quite the reputation for baking the most fabulous cookies and other sweet treats. When I got married I was of course thrilled to get several of her recipes as gifts. My favorite is the raspberry cookies. It is a “sandwich” type of cookie with raspberry jam in between them, topped with a pink frosting. Not only do we have these cookies at every shower we give but they are our hands down fav at Christmas. Almost every teacher I work with begs for them at Christmas so I make a lot. I would be happy to share the recipe with you if you want it (even if I don’t win)! Miss Monk would be so happy to know that her cookie recipe is so popular.
