Check out these chicks!

Farm Chicks 1

Have you heard of these chicks before? I hadn’t until a few weeks ago. It was really kind of a weird little coincidence. I was in the bookstore picking up Pioneer Woman Cookbooks for a recent giveaway and my eyes locked in on a book called The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. Loved the title and the design, but because I was over my limit on books for the day, make that month, all I did was thumb through the pages really quickly before I made myself leave.

But then, just two days later I received an email from none other than Serena, one of THE Farm Chicks. Seriously. Out of the blue. Two days later. Does stuff like that happen to you, too? Strange coincidences? It does to me all the time.

(Hmmm… The Pioneer Woman and The Farm Chicks. That’s kinda weird, too. Okay, I’m moving to the country.)

Anyway, it was a really short email message that said she wanted to send me something.

Curious, I said, ok. (I like surprises.)

Farm Chicks 6

And boy was I surprised when several days later I received a package full of all of these sweet, sweet gift tags.

Farm Chicks 2

Some with little cakes.

Farm Chicks 5

And others with sweet messages.

Farm Chicks 4

Plus there were all these fun recipe cards. (Forgive me for the extra blurriness. I was playing with different settings on my camera.)

Farm Chicks 3

Some even had Christmas themes.

I had no idea they had all these cute products plus a cookbook. Impressive.

Farm Chicks 13

Speaking of their book, I had to run out to the bookstore and get it right away.

Farm Chicks 14

Farm Chicks 8

Wish I had seen this before trying to make a pie last week. Could have come in handy.

Farm Chicks 9

The Farm Chicks love some pie. And the book has several yummy ones like this.

Farm Chicks 10

Plus, it has fun, do-it-yourself projects throughout. I’ve never made scones, but if I do, I want a scone cozy to go with them. Cozy scones. Yes. I want my scones to be cozy. Adorableness. Cuteness doesn’t quite cut it here.

Farm Chicks 11

Hi Serena. Thanks for sending me all the fun stuff. I love it.

Especially the necklace.

Oh, I forgot to tell you guys about the necklace. Well, it has a cake on the front of it and it’s just darling.

See.

Farm Chicks 7

And, since Serena sent me two of them… well…

Would you like one? Then, we can both look super cute, adorned in cake.

Farm Chicks 12

I’ll even throw in some of my gift tags and recipe cards, too. I’m a sharer.

She refers to this time in her life as her “suzy homemaker days”, and I look back on it with nothing but awe and admiration!

  74. My mom makes like a million different types of Christmas cookies every year and my most favorite are pressed cookies! Must be something about the insane amounts of butter they contain! YUM!

  75. Peanut Butter Balls. I refuse to make them because I just know I would eat them all. I rely on my baker friends and their sweet cookie trays delivered on the Eve.

  76. My grandma’s Christmas tree shortbread cookies. They’re a family tradition and are simply delicious :)

  77. I’m not celebrating christmas since I’m jewish.
Here in Israel we celebrate Hanukkah and we make latkes and doughnuts, and they’re really good :)

  84. My favorite sweet at Christmas time…hmmm that is hard. I have two but can only get one. When I was little my grandfather used to make homemade hard tac candy. It was great to watch him mix it up and when it was set to slam the cookie sheet down and break it apart. Then it was so sweet to eat all covered with powdered sugar. He stopped making it years ago when not many could come for the holidays and he was getting older. The other has to be my moms 7layer cookies. I swear I could eat the whole cookie sheet full myself! Starting with a base of soft set raspberry Jello (cranberry used to be the staple but it has long been discontinued) I add cranberry sauce, mandarin oranges, chopped pecans, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. It might sound unusual, but everybody loves it! We’re lucky if there are any left overs to enjoy the next day.

  92. My faveourite sweest are these dessert made by my Mother In law, who’s Serbian. She makes these amazing Nut & dry fruit based cookie/sweeties.. and they ARE vegan!

She will simply make a simple syrup, with lemon juice, zest… then added with grounded walnuts…. then the possibilty is enless from there… you can add ground up dried figs… or anytype of dried fruit…

My personal favourit is to melt Turkey delight.. then add with some diced up furit jelly slices (don’t melt that too much, bc I like the specks of colours in the cookies)… THEN you sandwich between layers of Plain Wafer sheets (I like triple deckers type! lol)… You will have to put between wax paper, then put a heavy & flat object on top, like a big webster dictionary on it… weight a couple of day to dry out.. VOIILE, you will have these AMAZING sweet & vegan cookies!

I will be making these with her in two weeks, I will def share pics with Bakerella if anyone is interested :)

  93. My favorite treat has to be sugar cookies. They are so much fun to make with friends or family and super yummy!

  94. I love me some pumpkin roll! Oh and chocolate crinkles. Oh and just plain old sugar cookies at Christmas! Yum!

  95. My Great Great Aunt Minnie’s Christmas morning coffee cake. It is a delicious old world recipe that was brought over with my grandmother’s family from Germany. It is less cake than a bread-like pie. Very hard to explain, but extremely delicious.

I am the only person in my family that ever learned how to make it before my Grandmother developed advanced Alzheimer’s disease, now I get to carry on the tradition and plan to teach my future daughter someday!

  96. Hot cocoa, holiday bread, and cranberry wassail! Yum!

  107. My sister’s Christmas Crack. Saltine Crackers covered in chocolate and toffee.

My favourite thing is what my family calls “Christmas icecream” – it’s sherry-soaked dried fruit mixed into confectioner’s custard and whipped cream (plus all the spare sherry) and then frozen…. So good! And so easy to eat at the end of a huge Christmas dinner – it just slips down and you want more and more.

  109. The Farm Chicks book and site are abfab! Thanks for sharing them with us. And, cookies, cookies, cookies, for Christmas! Any kind, any shape!

  141. How cute – especially the Christmas themed items! Love the style!

I love a good fruit cake, but in my family, that makes me the weird one, because everyone else despises it! When my mother remarried, her new husband and I didn’t always see eye-to-eye; one Christmas, he baked a fruit cake, and I was the only person who would try a piece. It wasn’t bad! :) Somehow, since then, we’ve been getting along much better.

The sauce can most obviously be used to top ice cream sundaes, but I love using it as a fondue or in dessert crepes…you get the idea! I have even found my kids sneaking spoonfuls straight from the jar.

  152. I love peppermint chocolate cookies!

  153. My favorite treat is a simple, classic cut-out cookie, preferably a Christmas tree shape. I loved helping my mom make these as a kid. We used to make so many we’d have them well into the new year, and it was always a treat to see a few on my plate at lunch.

  168. I love to make homemade caramels with my mom for our neighbors. It never tuns out right the first time so we always end up with double what we need and that means we get to eat it ourselves guilt free

  170. My favorite Christmas-time dessert is fudge and divinity. My grandma always made the best fudge, best we always had to buy divinity because she won’t make it, she never liked how it turned out.

  171. I love to make my dad’s sugar cookies with cream cheese frosting. He used to bake them and I helped frost and decorate. Since he passed away three years ago I have taken over the baking of them for my family.

  175. My husband makes cream puffs for Christmas and I make chocolate cake. My kids love livin’ in my house at the holidays.

  176. My favourite X-mas dessert is the Norwegian “riskrem” aka rice cream. It is rice porridge that has been made ahead and left to cool down. Then you gently stir it into a bowl of whipped cream. You decide yourself how thick or creamy you like the rice cream to be. Then you serve it chilled with a berry sauce. It is kind of strange but really nice at the same time. Some even put an almond into the porridge, and the one who gets the almond, gets the price: a big marsipan piglet.

  177. My favorite dessert at Christmas is the chocolate Christmas log. Of course the cookies that are made at Christmas come in as a close second.
