Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles

Cookie Dough Truffles

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Is there anything better? Well, actual chocolate chip cookies would rank right up there I suppose.

But really, how many times have we all eaten raw cookie dough before shoving those babies in the oven to bake? I know I have. Risking raw eggs with every bite.

Well, worry no longer because Lindsay of Love and Olive Oil has just written her first book, The Cookie Dough Lover’s Cookbook, filled with recipes using eggless raw cookie dough in cakes, pies, brownies, ice cream and more. We met at a Food Blog Forum event a couple of years ago and this year when I heard about her book I was captivated. How can you resist a title like that.

So this weekend I tried the basic Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles recipe from her book. It involved dipping so I was all in.

Cookie Dough Truffle Ingredients

All you need is flour, sugar, brown sugar, salt, butter, milk, vanilla and chocolate chips.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

No egg and all safe to eat by the spoonful. (See note in recipe about raw flour) And you might want to do just that because it’s so good.

Cookie Dough Truffles

Or you can make truffles. Use a 1-inch scoop for even amounts of dough.

I got more than 30 from the recipe but I can’t say exactly how many because, well I may have eaten some first. You know how cookie dough goes.

Cookie Dough Truffles

After you scoop them, roll them into round balls like the third one up from the bottom right. Yeah. I forgot to take a picture of them all rolled.

Then freeze them so they’ll be firm enough to dip.

Cookie Dough Truffles

You can use popsicle sticks to dip them in candy coating and then just sprinkle with tiny sprinkles. Smaller sprinkles are better for these because of the size of the truffles. And of course you can always just leave them stickless too.

Chocolate Sprinkles

I used these Dark Chocolate Decoratifs from India Tree for the first time and I love them. They are tiny, delicate squares of chocolate and they will need to cover some cupcakes soon too. Really soon.

Cookie Dough Truffles

Try writing on the popsicle sticks for an added touch. These would be cute on display for a party.

If the chocolate starts to pool too much at the bottom after you dip, here’s what I do to help them look pretty.

It can be messy, but effective.

Dipping Cookie Dough Truffles

Dip the ball in candy coating…

Cookie Dough Truffles

… and dot or slide the bottom of the coated ball on wax paper to pull off some of the excess coating.

Then just add sprinkles and set it over to the side in a clean spot on the wax paper to dry. Easy peasy and it makes them pretty.

Cookie Dough Truffles

They’ll taste the same no matter what they look like though, so now worries. Except for how many you’ll want to eat. These are pretty addictive little treats.

So… I dipped about half the balls in chocolate coating but about halfway through I had another idea.

Cookie Dough Truffles

It started with flattening the balls into little patties (the less perfect the better) and then freezing them for dipping.

Dipping into peanut butter coating for color this time. Sound interesting?

Can you see where I’m going?

Cookie Dough Truffles

You guessed it.

I just couldn’t resist.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles

Too too cute.

Prep Time 30 minutes
Additional Time 1 hour
Total Time 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1-1/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup mini chocolate chips
  • chocolate candy coating
  • popsicle sticks, cut in half (use kitchen scissors to make a clean, smooth cut)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat butter and sugars with an electric mixer until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes). Mix in milk and vanilla. Add flour and salt and mix on low until combined. Stir in chocolate chips.
  2. Chill dough in refrigerator for about 30 minutes until firm enough to roll or scoop into 1-inch balls.
  3. Place rolled balls on a wax paper lined baking sheet and place in the freezer for at least 15 minutes. (I had mine in for about an hour so longer is okay, too)
  4. Melt candy coating following instructions on the package. Remove a couple of balls from the freezer at a time and insert the cut stick into the ball. Dip in candy coating and let any excess fall off back into the bowl.
  5. Add small sprinkles on top and place on wax paper to set. If the chocolate pools at the bottom of the ball, dot the balls on the wax paper until most of it is pulled off the ball and then place it on a clean spot of the wax paper to set.
  6. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to a week.

Notes

About raw flour: Hey guys - I just wanted to update this post after reading some of your comments about using raw flour and the possibility it could make you sick. Here's an article about an outbreak in 2009 that was traced back to raw flour (Thanks Allie for sharing the link in the comments section). It's seems to be the only example and it doesn't say conclusively that it was the cause, but I wanted to share the information so you can make a more informed decision before you decide to make these.

**You can also heat flour before using to avoid problems.

Decorating Alternative: If decorating like chocolate chip cookies, flatten the balls into patties and freeze for dipping. Insert the stick carefully into the thickness of the patty and dip in melted peanut butter candy coating. Then just sprinkle with more mini chocolate chips before the coating sets.

Enjoy and if you’re a cookie dough lover, check out Lindsay’s book! It’s available now for pre-order and releases on June 5th.

  2. Hi, just wondering, can I dip the dough in melted chocolate instead of candy coating? I don’t have any on hand :(

  3. my chocolate didnt melt enough to where it was runny. So i couldnt get the whole cookie dough covered in chocolate. What candy chocolate did you use?

  4. LOVE THESE!!! They taste amazing… Now if I could just decorate like you, they’d look as good as they taste!

  5. These look fabulous! I love cookie dough!

  6. i love it how u did it

  7. We just made these and they are DELICIOUS!!! We will definetly be making these again! :))

  8. GENIUS!! LOVE IT!!

  9. how did you dip them so perfect? I couldn’t get the candy coating to get liquidy enough and it was really difficult and they turned out looking kinda messy… still delicious but I’m a bit of a perfectionist so want them to look nicer. Any advice from anyone?

  10. I’m going to try making these tonight, they look so cute and delicious! I don’t bake much and I was wondering if using baker’s baking chocolate would be the same as using a chocolate candy coating? If so, should I get semi-sweet or milk chocolate?

  11. Wow! I made these and they are very good and super easy!

  12. I think these are so cute and wonderful! I made them and ate them with my mom. We both felt sick and threw up… so I’m not sure this is safe.

  13. I made these and everyone was so angry at me…. because they were addicting and absolutely AMAZING. I made them a little too big by accident, but no one even cared, they were devoured. What a great recipe!

  14. OMG WOW!! I am trying these today!! <3

  15. Olá, para quem tem medo da farinha crua, sugiro farinha de amêndoas, a mesma usada para fazer Macarons. Parabéns pelo site.

  16. I’m so happy I found your blog! I was looking for a cute idea for a bridal shower I’m going to and this is perfect! Its not a formal bridal shower and the bride is younger so this will be a bit hit! I made one test batch and the flavor was amazing but I am going to put the Popsicle sticks in before I freeze them since I had trouble with them popping out of my truffles. Other than that I am making them the same and as an added touch sprinkling them with coconut flakes! Yum! They are amazing!!! Thank you!!

  17. hello bakerella! greetings from manila, PH i just discovered your blog today & i love it! :) in fact, my 4yr old daughter & i are going to try the choco chip cookie dough today and i just ordered your book today! :)

  18. Where does your creativity end. These are super yummy. Making these today!

  19. I found mini popsicle sticks at the store, so I’m going to use those when I make these this weekend!

@Mish – I’m guessing the dough would likely soften a lot if left out for any substantial length of time.

@Melizia – no, no baking. The whole point of these is that they’re for people who like to nibble on raw cookie dough, and because these don’t have eggs it’s a safe way to do it.

  20. i love ur idea of cakes on the stick, but are they not baked, i see you use dough but indicated no baking?

  21. OMG! So yummy! I dislike cookie dough but my boyfriend, these were so delicious! I think I’ll omit the salt and reduce sugar next time though. Thank you and I intend on purchasing the book!

  22. Why would these need to be refrigerated? Other than the chocolate melting, is there a reason? Made these this weekend and my kids love them!!

  23. Sooooo cute! :) I’m planning on making these for a party :D so I was wondering..about how much melting chocolate was used for the truffles :o?

  24. I am starting to believe that you cannot even BEGIN to keep up with yourself and your own ideas! ;). Your dreams at night must even keep you running! AWESOME work Angie. Thank you for sharing with all of us.

  29. What can you use instead of Chocolate Candy Coating?
I don’t think we have it in New Zealand! :(

  30. This such a great idea! I am a huge cookie dough eater and this is a great way to eat it safely!

  31. I made these! DELICIOUS – went really fast and when rolling them had a crazy idea, could the the cookie dough be rolled into small chunks and put in ice cream????? Can’t wait to get the book and eat Chocolate chip cookie based desserts!!!! :D

  32. I made these yesterday with my bff and they were so good and easy to make! I was low in chocolate so I rolled them in sprinkles instead. They were sooo yummy!

  33. Reallllly really yummy with the peanut butter coating. We dont really buy candy melts, so I used peanut butter chocolate chips instead and I had a really hard time getting them to the right consistency for dipping. Any tips?

  34. like Mario implied I didnt even know that some people can profit $6235 in one month on the internet. have you read this web page(Click on menu Home more information) http://goo.gl/yrTzo

  35. Hi, just wanna ask when do you stick the popsicle stick into the cookie dough. Before freezing or after they’re taken out from the freezer?

  36. You…

You are SO BAD. But they look SOOO GOOOOODD!!!

Now I’m gonna have to make thiese! my sister’ will never forgive me! :)

  37. Another incredible idea! I have to try these, they will look amazing on a dessert table.

  44. I’m obsessed! I NEED to make these!

  45. “peanut butter candy coating” what are you using exactly, you buy it or you make it?

  46. Absolutely fantastic! They look so perfect! The chocolate chip cookie pops are adorable!

  47. Yowza! These look so delicious! I love the chocolate chip cookie pops. They look perfect!

  48. Question about the raw flour thing, would baking the flour before making the cookie dough eliminate the possibility of e.coli? And would it change the flavour of the cookie dough?

  49. These look so good.. I think that I would just make the dough and eat it by the pound! I gotta ask, I am in love with your photos, and I know you use a Canon, but which? Love your recipes!!

  50. Will be making these…many times…yum! :-)

  51. Finally figured out how to get the cookies dipped……………anyWHO must tell you that these were the hit of the chocolate fountain items!!!! I kept the un-dipped truffles in the freezer until last minute; also froze the peanut butter dipped cookies until party; didn’t matter as they went fast! Thanks again.

  52. Love!
And I have an idea for cake pops!
CHANEL! Or all those famous fashion designers and such etc….

  53. Omg my nephew LOOOVES Cookie Monster and i told him i would make him a cookie monster cake to go along with his theme next bday and these would make the cutest addition or even as party favors… Love it

  54. This sounds like a great option for those people who are gluten free too. Without needing to worry about how the dough rises in the oven, they can just use whatever gf tastes the best!

  55. These are magically divine! I made them for my friend’s birthday. The only problem I had was they couldn’t sit out for long…my chocolate melted and the dough was not very firm… but it could be that I live on the Mississippi Gulf Coast where it is super humid and hot. :) But I will be making them again!!!

  56. These were the hit of my daughter’s 17th birthday party. Made 3 batches… None left! Thanks!

  57. Cutest ever! I also just found an egg-less cookie dough recipe to make truffles! ( http://www.howsweeteats.com/2012/03/chocolate-chip-cookie-dough-peanut-butter-cups/ )… Can’t wait to try them all now!

  58. Made these this weekend for a team party. They were unbelievably good! Dipped 1/2 of them in chocolate and 1/2 in butterscotch. Couldn’t cut the popcicle sticks in 1/2 cleanly, so skipped those and just made the truffles.

  59. Love it !

  60. WoooW Amazing !!!!!!

  61. Oh my. My heart has never beat so fast reading a recipe. Thanks for sharing!

  62. Woo this is the best post ever, I love choc chip cookie dough. Love the look of them in the first pic – all rustic. But also cannot resist the cute stamped paddle pop sticks and really like the idea from another comment about dipping the dough in white chocolate.
Never gotten sick from eating the leftovers from the mixing bowl yet.

  63. I’ve been loving all these cookie dough recipes I’ve been seeing from Lindsey’s cookbook…these truffles look so great and you have done an excellent job recreating them! Gorgeous and creative little popsicle sticks!

  64. I am bouncing around your blog right now like a sugar fiend. I thought you needed to know that…

  65. wow, i am absolutely drooling! those look SO decadently delicious! thanks for sharing!

  66. these look SO good,
i have to try this recipe.
    thanks for sharing!
    xo, cheyenne

  67. The book seems great for me, considering I’m a vegetarian and bake all eggless stuff at home. But, raw cookie dough filled into something else but not baked? … hmm, not my cup of tea :)

  68. I think I’m one of the few who never eats cookie dough before it’s baked (it’s not even because of the raw eggs) but these are super super cute!

  69. I love food shaped food . . . so cute!<3

  70. Made the cookie dough truffles for both a birthday party and a surprise for my husband’s work today. They are incredible! Very easy to make. Very tasty. And super cute. Thanks for posting this great recipe from Lindsay’s book. :)

  71. I made these yesterday – oh yum!
I can’t wait to make a sugar cookie variation. I also want to try some other dipping thing.
Thank you for sharing! This really brightened everyone’s day.

  72. Adorable! I love cookie dough and so does my 9 year old. She will love these recipes. :)

  73. Thank you for featuring an egg free recipe!!!! Fantastic for us with egg allergies :)

  74. Genius!! You never cease to amaze me. I cannot wait to try making these. Thanks Bakerella! xo

  75. I seen these today and had to make them tonight!!! They are sooo good!!! And super quick. Thank you for sharing I will have to get this book when it is released!!! Love them!! Thank you for all of your great ideas.

  76. These look AMAZING! I’m going to make some for a pot-luck we’re having soon, thanks for the recipe! <3

  77. Those are absolutely ADORABLE!!! I canNOT wait to try them! I love this website, and am following it with my blog. I can hardly wait to see what you come up with next!

  78. Made the truffle- balls and everything went according to plan; however, the peanut butter dipped cookies are falling off the stick when we dip into the melted Wilton peanut butter candy melts…….. Did you use the same 1″ scoop for the cookies or should we have made larger/thicker discs? Ours seem to look like the cookie-disks in your photos…did you use Wilton candy melts? Did you add anything to thin the melted peanut butter mixture? Did you re-freeze the cookie disk after inserting the sticks? Crumbly, mess-help!

  79. I will be making these this weekend. Such a cute and simply idea. LOVE

  80. Yum….These look so good. My children are going to love them, they always want cookie dough and of course I wont let them!! Does the dough split at all when you insert the craft stick??

  81. These look so good….going to make them tomorrow. Does the dough split at all when you put the stick in them??

  82. Leave it to you to take some adorable and make it…um…adorabler? :)

  83. SOO cute! Just a tip for getting excess chocolate off when you’re dipping things – touch them on the surface of the melted chocolate and gently shake them, the surface tension of the chocolate + gravity will pull excess chocolate off.

  84. These look so great! The cookie pops are my favourite. It’s so disappointing that candy melts don’t exist where I’m from. Shipping them is just too expensive. Is there anything else that can be used in their stead?

  85. Wow! I’ve been lusting over these since you’ve posted!

I only need to find a mesurement converter so I can make them myself =)

  86. wow, look gorgeous, I will try it soon.
    parfum pas cher

  87. Adorable! Chocolate chip cookie dough and peanut butter covering – I’m in love!

  89. yum! i will be heading to my kitchen and digging out the ingredients : )

  90. The author of this book is so amazing. I wrote to ask about the flour issue and she not only wrote back right away, she came over here and posted, too. I’m very excited to try these recipes out. I’ve ordered the book. Glad I only have to wait a week for it!

  91. Wanted to address the raw flour issue – while I don’t believe it’s any more dangerous than eating, say, raw spinach or cantaloupe these days, if it makes you nervous, you can easily toast the flour. Spread it out on a cookie sheet and bake it at 350 for 5 to 7 minutes. It’ll get nice and nutty and brown and probably give the dough a great flavor too!

  92. OMG i’ve got them in the fridge now… and counting them down every time i pass it mmmmmmm

  93. would toasting the flour help overcome the whole raw flour/possible sickness issues? i wonder if it would change the flavor too much.

  94. These look so addictive! And just in time for my birthday! Thank you for sharing I will certainly be trying these very soon.

  95. I’m SO excited about this post Bakerella!! I’m allergic to eggs so this is one I can make AND eat too!

  96. oh the cookies are the cutest thing ever!

  97. I love the idea of the cookie shaped pops. I can’t wait to try those out. Lindsay’s new book is on my Amazon wishlist for sure! I can’t wait for it to come out. Thanks for the awesome ideas! Everything looks amazing.

  98. Was wondering what anyone thought about dipping those adorable little cookie pops in white chocolate. I love peanut butter but I would love to take these to picnics and I try not to bring anything nut based when taking sweets to big functions

  99. My daughter turns 15 tomorrow and i was searching for the perfect cupcake/cake for her….but THIS is right up her alley and she opted out of cake in favor of cookie dough! Perfect timing Bakerella!!

  100. Wow! I’m planning my sister’s baby shower and couldn’t figure out what sweet treat to give away “goodie bags”. My sis *loves* my chocolate chip cookie dough, so this is the perfect treat!

You are brilliant and your creations are original and adorable. Thank you so much!!

  101. Saw these yesterday in my Facebook feed. My daughter caught me looking at them and insisted we make them for a class party today, so we did. We learned cake pop making from you and this is yet another fab creation. They were a huge hit and to tell it like it is, I offered one to my hubby. Gone. In. One. Bite. He nibbled the second one to get the full experience. Haven’t tried the cookie shaped one (nut free school) but this one was awesome. You inspire us!

  102. I’ve been making a similar version of these for years! They are so tasty! Love the cookie pops – so cute. (Here is my version of the cookie dough truffle – http://joandsue.blogspot.ca/2011/07/chocolate-chip-cookie-dough-truffles.html )

  103. These look luscious! I read that ConAgra Mills now has a flour that is especially treated to be safe to eat raw. It “preserves gluten functionality and taste while mitigating microbiological risk associated with raw flour.” http://www.conagramills.com/our_products/safeguard.jsp

  104. Yummo!! These look gorgeous. I’ll have to try making them on the weekend. I’m thinking my boys will LOVE them.
I do need to know, though, how much butter, in ounces or grams, is in a “stick” please?

  105. I got your latest newsletter and made some of these super yummy cookie dough! The recipe is heavenly! Bakerella thanks so much for sharing this awesome recipe.

  106. Do you have to use milk?? I’m asking because I was going to make them tonight, but I realized my milk expired D: HELP PLEASE

  107. Stunningly adorable!!!!!! I love when you show other people’s things you have tried and then put your own little twist on them.

  108. OMG I LOVE COOKIE DOUGH TO NO END! im so excited to try these recipes! thanks bakerella!

  109. They look yummy. I can’t wait to try them.. I must find those chocolate sprinkles that are so fine!

  110. Yummy and cute :D. The movie theater near me sells cookie dough bites, pretty good, but these look so much better :)

  111. Looks fantastic! I am drooling. I reckon I could eat the entire batch on my own!

  112. These look fab.

My mom was certain that raw flour was a big no-no. I’d sneak bites and then hope nothing terrible would happen to me. Nothing ever did, of course.

  113. I. LOVE. IT!! Totally doing this for my daughter’s birthday party. Thanks for sharing!!

  114. Hey there Bakerella!

  121. I just made these and they are delicious! I’ll have to add this cookbook to the long list of cookbooks that I’m going to have to get. I was having trouble with my candy melts, so mine don’t look quite as nice as yours do :)

  122. Thank you for a great cookie dough recipe!

I’m going to add coffee flavor to mine for coffee cookie dough chocolate pops!

  127. Another one I will have to try, thanks for the recipe!

  128. So there’s a reason why we don’t live in the same neighborhood or even state… your wonderful blog and photos would make me gain about 600 pounds if we lived any closer… I’m sure the calories are dissipated by distance… But OH! I do love reading and looking… you are so amazingly creative…

  129. You know, I couldn’t help but think of you when I was writing the Sugar Cookie Dough Lollipop recipe. :) I love the peanut butter coated pops – cookie dough disguised as a cookie? Fantastic! And I am SO buying some of those sprinkles. :)

Thanks so much for the lovely post and for spreading the word!

  130. Those chocolate chip cookie pops look delish! If not even more delish than cookies themselves! Loving this post, will definitely be making these for the next girls night in ;)
