Grocery item goes gourmet (part 2)

After making the Oreo Truffles last week, I thought I would try the recipe with Nutter Butters. I don’t have a classic Peanut Butter Ball Recipe, so I thought, what the heck. They came out pretty good. I think I like the Oreo Truffles a little better though. Mainly because the flavor is so distinct. With these, its just a good old tried and true peanut butter and chocolate combo. Just plain………!

Nutter Butter Balls

Start by finely chopping the cookies…
Making Nutter Butter Balls

Combine with cream cheese and roll into balls…
Making Nutter Butter Balls

And dip in chocolate… easy!
Dipped in chocolate

Nutter Butter Balls
Yield: 30 balls

Nutter Butter Balls

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. Nutter Butter cookies (broken… use cookie with the cream center)
  • 8oz. package cream cheese (softened)
  • 1 lb. package chocolate candy coating

Instructions

  1. Finely crush all but 5 cookies in a food processor or place them in a ziploc bag and crush into a fine consistency.
  2. Combine with cream cheese. Use the back of a large spoon to help mash the two together.
  3. Roll the mixture into 1" balls and place on wax paper covered cookie sheet.
  4. Melt chocolate as directed on the package and then dip balls into chocolate, tap off extra and set aside on wax paper covered cookie sheet to dry.
  5. Once dry, refrigerate and enjoy!

  3. I made these as a bday gift and was a little underwhelmed. The Oreo Truffles left big (and sweet!) shoes to fill. The PB flavor was more muted than I expected. I’ve made white chocolate covered Nutty Butters several times before and they’ve always been a hit and a personal favorite. Maybe the cream cheese is to blame? Also, I did also experience “weeping” with these truffles. I too believe it was the oil since these are a PB based cookie. My suggestion would be to let the crushed cookies sit out on a paper towel for a spell (overnight?). Also, I think a small amount of powdered sugar (to taste) may help with the flavor when mixing the crumbs and cream cheese. In the future I’ll stick with Oreo Truffles and just dipping the Nutty Butters.

  9. figured it out – chocolate almond bark. When I would goggle chocolate bark, what would come up is a home made chocolate type of bar.

  13. I just wanted to say these were a big hit this Christmas at my house, but I did change the recipe a little. I thought the dough mixture was a little bland, so I added about a cup of sugar to sweeten it up. Perfect!

  23. I have a great Nutter Butter ball recipe, given to me by my vegan stepdaughter. Instead of the cream cheese, I use a jar of Jif peanut butter for the binder. You get more peanut butter flavor and it’s not necessary for it to stay refrigerated after dipping.

I keep seeing the cake pop pan for sale and I have thought about it but i hate to waste my money on something that messes up my product. Do you mix the icing and the cake mix together and put in pan or is the pan just for cake to bake and dip?

    Last December, I was introduced to your website though a cupcake bite my friend made. They were absolutely delicious!

    I’ve just perusing through your recipes and i saw this one! I love peanut butter and chocolate and I’m wondering if you could adapt the recipe to include additional peanut butter/almond butter/nutella etc in place of cream cheese? I think it might enhance the peanutty flavor or at least bring a bit more dimension.

    If you could try that and let me know that would be great!! I’m on a never ending diet and my husband doesn’t like peanut butter so these would never get finished in my house!

  37. My friend always uses several big tablespoons of canned frosting instead of the cream cheese. Use enough frosting to make the balls into balls…then cool/freeze, dip and eat. If you use a stick make sure to freeze with the stick already in…and dip so coating touches the stick….stability.

  38. i loved the oreo truffles, and i had the same thought about nutter butter ones being equally excellent! however, at least when i tried it, the peanut butter inside tends to leak a bit of oil if you let the truffle sit out at room temperature more than 5 minutes, making it kind of sickly. shame :/

I purchased your book the day it hit Barnes & Nobles bookshelves & because I work @ a library I had them purchase a copy for our patrons as well. :) I’ve been baking since high school ( the 80’s) but I was so scared to try your cake balls!   51. I made these and they look so beautiful! I followed your directions exactly but found them to be a bit too “cream cheesey” for my taste. They just don’t have enough peanut buttery taste inside.   54. These remind me of a childhood peanut butter candy my aunt used to make…from actual peanut butter….she would make small pb balls and place them in the fridge for a few hrs..then the idea was to dip them in chocolate…but they never made it that far…we would sneak in and eat them before.

  55. You’ve sincerely inspired me to do what I’ve been wanting to do for a while and it’s little things like these, with cookies and cake. I’ve made a different version of these before but with Maria cookies and condensed milk. PLEASE TRY THIS OUT! I’ve added mini chocolate chips to this dough and it looks like cookie dough! They are sweet and addictive. I don’t have a recipe but the consistency it like the ones from this recipe.

  58. Just wanted to share a version of the Oreo truffles that I made…
    I made the regular Oreo balls, mixed in about 3/4 cup of coconut to the Oreos and cream cheese mixture, rolled into balls and dipped into milk chocolate coating, then topped with crushed almonds. My version of Almond Joy Truffles…they were a HUGE hit! Hope you enjoy!!!! :)

  59. peanut butter bon bons: 1 cup butter, 2 cup peanut butter, 4 cup powdered sugar. Refrigerate. Dip in melted chocolate and place to dry on wax paper (I use a toothpick to dip them). You’ve got to get them to just the right coldness for easiest dipping, so play with it a bit.

    I’ve been eating these for years, my Mom’s recipe! Thought I would share!

  64. I have a recipe that is similar to this, but is much sweeter (probably because of the powdered sugar)

    9 oz or crunchy peanut butter
    1/4 cup of butter melted
    beat the two together until combined
    then add
    1 and 5/8ths cups of rice cereal
    2 cups of powdered sugar ( I don’t have the recipe with me, but it may be more or less, so add until it become a consistency conducive to rolling)
    roll them out to the same size as yours and then dip in chocolate. People go crazy over these, and they can’t get enough!! Good Luck

  66. I made these on a study break tonight for my house and they loved them! Growing up, ladies at my church always made peanut butter eggs for easter, and they were always a huge hit, so I took this recipe and instead of balls made eggs…yum! and SO EASY!

  69. I just started reading your blog. It’s pretty amazing. I’m actually making a little recipe book for fun for my grandma and me, and putting some of your cute ideas into it.

    I didn’t know if you’d found a great peanut butter ball recipe or not yet – but this one is pretty good if you’d like to try it. I’m not sure where it came from originally, but my Grandma’s made them since my dad was little. It makes them in bulk though. She makes them every Christmas for our family – which is pretty big. You’ll like them though – they have chocolate :)

    2 Cups Chunky Peanut butter
    3 Cups Crushed Rice Crispies (measured before Crushing)
    1lb Powdered Sugar.
    1 Stick Softened Butter
    4 oz semi-sweet Chocolate, melted

    MIx ingredients and roll into balls. Place on Cookie Sheet
    Melt chocolate in a zip-lock bag in microwave on Medium.
    Cut 1 tip of the bag, and drizzle small amounts of chocolate over tops of peanut butter balls.
    Refrigerate.

    They’re easy.

    I’m trying to make something similar to these only in the Shape of Easter Eggs. I’m going to do these for a fundraiser for a young man that passed away unexpectedly, but I have a few questions…
    Because these will need to be made in large quantities for pickup I am concerned about refrigeration. Most of the recipes include cream cheese- a few do not. If I opt for cream cheese they would have to be refrigerated correct?

    I know my church growing up did these every year for a fundraiser and didn’t refrigerate (no room). I’m guessing they just did the pb and confect. sugar version…can you see any need for refrigeration there?

    Also, how long do you think these would keep? I want to make sure I deliver a fresh product…but I’m only one person!! I’ll need to do a little along the way.

  78. I made these last night, only thing I did different (and it makes it SOO MUCH EASIER) is add the Cream Cheese to my crushed cookies in the food processor instead of trying to hand mix.   79. Oreo balls (of all different flavor combinations) have become an absolute staple at our family functions! Everyone requests them – I can’t wait to try the Nutter Buttter version. You said the peanut butter taste isn’t really strong – I am going to try to dip some in melted peanut butter chips and then drizzling melted chocolate over for decoration… another choc/pbutter combo we have tried and loved is to just dip regular oreo balls into melted pbutter chips – these are actually my fave combo, so I can’t wait to try the nutter butter ones – bought the cookies yesterday!

  80. buckeye recipe (penut butter balls)
    4 sticks butter
    32 oz jar PB
    3 boxes confectioners sugar
    chocolate candy coating

    Melt butter in large bowl, mix in PB. Mix in sugar, 1 box at a time. You have to use your hands to mix in the last box. Now roll into walnut sized balls. Dip into chocolate candy coating. Enjoy! The powder sugar really makes these melt in your mouth.
    Warning: this is a large recipe makes 2 full cookie sheets.

  85. I made these along with the regular cake balls for my wedding reception. They came out so delicious and were so easy to make. I also made brownie balls with brownie crumbled up and cream cheese frosting; they had a wonderful texture with a little crunch from the edges of the brownies, sooo good!! With the nutter butter ones I used the reserved cookies and sprinkled them on top while they were still wet. What a hit these are!! Thank you for the wonderful ideas :)

  92. I did them again last weekend and used less peanut butter. I used about a 3/4 cup of peanut butter, maybe a 1/4-1/2 cup of powdered sugar and a 1/8-1/4 cup of ground peanuts. They were perfect, completely peanutty and held their shape in the melted chocolate. And they still had that fun crystally nutter butter texture. I think these are way better than the Oreo ones. I made those last weekend too, and I still think these are tops.

  94. Super easy. I was eating these 45 min. after I started making them. I didn’t use cream cheese (I sorta hate cream cheese), and just used peanut butter and powdered sugar.They lost shape a little under the dipping chocolate, but I think if I lessen the peanut butter and up the powdered sugar they’d be perfect next time (I used 8 oz of peanut butter). But they’re fine now — and I just keep them in the fridge.

  95. If it puddles a lot, immediately draw a separation line with a toothpick, that way it can be broken off easily when it dries.

    Or tap off the excess chocolate more before you lay on the wax paper.

The moms were upset that I only gave them to the kids. hahaha I am sad it took me so long to get around to making them because they are our new favorite treat.

  118. Oh, I love dark chocolate. The ones I’ve made without using the candy coatings just seem to melt on my fingers as soon as I touch them though.

    Mercken’s makes a dark chocolate candy coating that’s pretty good btw.

  119. I am sure the peanut butter truffles you made are delicious but you have to try to make the melted chocolate with really good semi sweet dark chocolate; it made a world of difference. The taste was devine!   120. Proportions mainly. A similar recipe I used for oreos did not use the entire package, so I followed suit here. You can probably get away with the entire thing though.

  136. I was pondering these and it occurred to me you could amp up the peanut butter flavor by replacing half the cream cheese with peanut butter. Ooh, and decorate the tops with a peanut so you can tell them apart form the oreo ones on a plate.
    Of course, we don’t have Nutter Butters here in Canada, but we do have maple leaf cookies… hmm…maple and white chocolate… I might just have to go to the grocery store :)

  159. I made the oreo ones last week and tonight I’m making the nutter butter ones. SO GOOD. I only dip the tops in chocolate b/c I’m lazy and it’s easier. Then I sprinkle crumbs on the top. They are much loved!
